I've traveled/driven soooo much of this country, especially in the west, over my 70 times around the sun, that your videos always seem to evoke a tremendous sense of nostalgia for me. I think you ought to do Carson City to South Lake Tahoe and then Kingsbury Summit down to Gardiner, if you are still in the area. The views coming over Spooner Summit and seeing the entire Tahoe Basin below you are unbelievable, and eastbound on Kingsbury are also stunning.

The last time I was in Carson City, the freeway had yet to be built. Carson St had both U.S. 50 and U.S. 395. The street had 4 narrow lanes (2 in each direction) and no turning lane. It could be like pulling teeth, getting through CC. Have you ever taken Nevada Route 207? It starts at 1:00 in your video, heads over Kingsbury Summit, and descends into Gardnerville. The views are quite spectacular when heading in the eastbound direction. It's a little-known back road.

I used to live in SLT decades ago and drove over Kingsbury several times, both east and west bound. Was a gnarly gravel/dirt semi-2 lane back then, but truly spectacular views eastbound and down. I was young and stupid back then, used to drive it on full moon nights, headlights off. Not really as dangerous as it sounds, as I was usually the only car on the road the entire way. Back then, folks just didn't drive Kingsbury Grade at night, hahahaha. And if I did see another car coming, I'd turn my headlights on.

I’ve done that drive many times while on vacation, going between Stateline and Reno. There is something sad at the end of a Lake Tahoe trip, when you have to drive back to Reno for a flight home, and you see the terrain change as you descend from Spooner Summit into Carson City.

The writer and humorist, Mark Twain, during his many travels around the world, would compare whatever lake he saw to that of Lake Tahoe. To his way of thinking, no other lake compared. He became Mark Twain during his stint in the Nevada Territory, 1861-1864. He arrived when Nevada was created out of the Utah territory. One of my favorite parts of the world, Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley with a sprinkle of Virginia City, NV.

Nice to see this area bounce back after the pandemic. Driven 50 and 80 so many times over the decades could drive it my sleep. Have seen Tahoe, Reno and sparks Carson city change over decades from the early 70,s to 2000,s despite the fires blizzards. still one of the most picturesque places in the country

Spooner Lake used to have some great little cross country ski trails we used. Regarding the drive, I find the ride eastbound to be prettiest once you pass Spooner Summit and start the descent. I find the peak-a-boo vistas into the valley to be the highlight of the ride. Westbound, the climb to Spooner is ok, but no great shakes, but once you pass Spooner Summit and Lake Tahoe starts to gradually move from peaking into your view to being completely revealed is mesmerizing.

Crazy how the scenery in the western US goes from one extreme to another in such a short distance! Must be quite shocking to get out of the car and experience the sudden change in the weather.

Eastern Sierra from Coso Junction to Mammoth for me is the stairway to Heaven. Tahoe *_is_* Heaven. There's no more beautiful venue in all of America.

I had a good Dr friend, who had a condominium on Lake Tahoe, in Incline Village. Always wanted to visit him there. The TV show Bonanza was filmed near there. My friend passed away 5 or so years ago. Thank you for sharing.

7:04 is the turn-off to continue the Lake Tahoe Loop Drive (they need to make better signs for that btw). I bet everyone was glad that the 580 bypass was built so that they could enjoy the historic part of Carson City more, as opposed to constant traffic.

Gotta command NDOT for thinking ahead & widening US 50 as it goes through the Carson Range. Can't picture all that traffic on a 2-lane road. & for those who don't know, prior to the southern end of I-580 being completed at the intersection where Kyle exit stage left, that used to be a T-intersection where US 50 & US 395 once overlapped on Carson St. as it enters the heart of the state capitol. Now NDOT needs to update the I-580's southern end into a freeway intercharge. But that may take a while. Just glad that you done over US 50 in the Sierra Nevada. That was one of my favorite series from the early days of your channel.

I-580 may soon become part of I-11, linking Reno/Carson to Las Vegas and Phoenix.

You might have mentioned Bourne Meadows which is just off US50 near McFaul Creek and Zepher Cove. This is where the iconic opening credits of Bonanza was filmed

Nice one once again, Kyle. Last time I was on 50 was for My Mom's wedding in Tahoe as a 6-year old in 1977...and never went east of Stateline. Thanks showing another spot off the Interstate path (some time away from those is needed once in a while).

Pretty nice scenery! If I’m not mistaken, there was plans in the 50s and 60s to have U.S. 50 as a full freeway from Placerville to Carson City (including a tunnel in Echo Summit and a bypass of SLT) Do you think traffic counts would warrant a freeway or simply having a four lane expressway along the whole way?
@dwood78part234 ай бұрын
@@juane.sanchez8343 most likely they abandoned that plan because they realized that widening US 50 in the Sierra Nevada would be difficult- if not impossible. So CalTrans just created passing lanes for the 2-lane part of the highway instead.
