US accuses Russia of launching space weapon into orbit

The United States has accused Russia of deploying a space weapon into low-Earth orbit, sparking international concern over the militarization of space.
"Russia launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that we assess is likely a counter space weapon, presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit," Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said. He added that the weapon was launched into the "same orbit" as a U.S. government satellite.
Russian officials, however, dismissed the assertion. The Kremlin emphasized that Russia's actions in space conformed to international law, and Russia has repeatedly proposed a ban on space weapons, but the U.S. has reportedly dismissed these suggestions.

It's funny to hear this from the USA. The US and its allies rejected in the UN Security Council a draft resolution on the prevention of an arms race in outer space, which was introduced by Russia. During the vote, the document was supported by 7 of the 15 members of the Security Council, including China, but representatives of Britain, the US, France, Japan and several other countries rejected the document. Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, recalled that earlier the US and its allies "assured everyone of their commitment to peaceful outer space," but now "they have finally thrown off their masks." China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, also noted that China is very disappointed that the Security Council did not adopt the draft resolution. The resolution provided for a ban on the deployment of not only weapons of mass destruction in space (as previously proposed by the US and Japan), but also any weapons in general.
