The hype around highway landings is a bit confusing as this is not a new idea. There has long been a stretch of MSR1 in South Korea south of Seoul, where pilots routinely can practice these landings. In fact, the highway is much wider and marked as a runway, while two billboards on the East side of the roadway even shield a landing control tower. Seoul and other major airports are only 15 minutes away from North Korean fast movers, so the South has been creative in several areas as the first strikes would be against C&C centers and runways. The north also has a tremendous amount of artillery positioned to hammer the south just across the DMZ, another good reason they moved the UN and 8th Army headquarters out of Seoul to further south on the peninsula.

I was crewing a Huey in '87 at a West German tank training area for the Allies. We were flying along, with the doors wide open in June. I was hooked into my monkey harness and hanging out the side door watching for fast movers. All of a sudden to our right from behind, at an altitude very close to ours, two French Mirages came screaming by us. I could see the pilots. After I told the pilots about them, and they came past, I saw two A-10 Warthogs come screaming past us chasing the Mirages. The Mirages climbed and did a sweet and slow roll to the left and right to split up. The A-10s followed suit, but when they turned to chase their targets, they flipped both aircraft over on their wings and cut a ribbon in the sky chasing those two French pilots. It was awesome, and they're flying techniques were so different! That was the best part of that ride. At one point, the female co -pilot radioed the tower and said, "We seem to be slightly disoriented...". I thought, BS, you're lost! How could she be lost when the radio freqs' were strapped to her leg? She got a flight slot, but not me...

Pretty cool, and would have been awesome to watch, but this didn’t look overly challenging. There was plenty of clearance, and a longer run space than any actual runway routinely used. The only real challenge here is setting it down really easy so as not to damage our already-fragile roads.

@@christopherbedford9897 it’s not the weight. It’s the impact, and the concentrated weight on each small wheel. That bang wasn't touch down, it was a Michigan pothole. I'd rather have to dodge a SAM than one of those. There's no escape or countermeasure for a Michigan pothole currently in the USAF inventory.

Moments like this make me feel proud to have come from Michigan. All other moments remind me of why I ended up leaving the cesspool of corruption. I was not strong enough to stick around and fight for that great State. I just gave up, moved to another State that was not overrun, when I saw more and more people supporting the corruption and destruction of what Michigan used to be.

The Thunderbolt 2. I was attacked by two A-10's. It was the mid 90's and we were in a boat on the upper Suwannee River (N. Central Fl.). Before we new it, there were two A-10 right on top of us. Never heard them coming. The lead dropped his/her wing to inspect, or wonder what we might be catching. It was amazing to say the least. Very impressive. Most likely from Moody AFB, Georgia. Love you guys, come visit us anytime. With Love from Suwannee County Fl.

They showed two different birds one had a DM tail flash which is an active-duty unit and the other a MI tail flash which is the air guard unit. Also, that is my first time seeing the A-10 Combat Command patch on his flight suit but then again I have been retired since '97.🤔

Theoretically, an A-10 can land on any straight stretch of highway, as well as roughly prepared airstrips. This exercise is similar to what the Swedish Air Force is doing for its JAS 39 Gripen fighters.

The A-10 is by far the meanest aircraft currently flying! Years ago at an airshow in Trenton, Ontario I had the chance to walk around this amazing beast and it awe inspiring!
@trainliker1002 жыл бұрын
I saw one of these demonstrated at an air show and they did the sharpest 90 degree turn I've ever seen. Seemed impossible. Later, I chatted with the pilot who was quite proud of the aircraft. I recall he said it had redundant hydraulic systems and even if they were both out it could still be flown manually, just not with high performance maneuvers. He discussed how it was armored and designed to be shot up pretty badly and still be able to return home. I suggested it would give me pause if my assignment was in an aircraft "deigned to be shot up pretty badly".
@No1sonuk2 жыл бұрын
There are two hydraulic systems and a cable backup - cable as in the way planes used to be controlled - wires pulling the control surfaces. IIRC, only 3 people have attempted to land a damaged A-10 on "manual reversion" (the manual cable control system). Only 2 of them succeeded.
@trainliker1002 жыл бұрын
@@No1sonuk That sort of leaves some questions about the one who didn't succeed. Was it due to inability to aviate with the manual system and everything else was "OK"? Or were there other factors not related to manual flight control system that contributed to the failure?

Cool! The A10 is badass. I've heard the legend that Interstates have to have X amount of straight road for every Y miles with a certain width in order to be used by military aircraft in time of need. I've heard that it's not true but t's nice to see that it could possibly be used by this aircraft, at least.

That actually IS true about the Autobahn and a bunch of other countries but you are correct that the US never intended or mandated that any highway be built with temporary airfield use in mind. See en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_strip
