I father was drafted into the Army in 1942. He spent three years in the South Pacific fighting the Japanese. He was a Sargent after one year and was asked to be an officer but he declined. I was born in 1953 and was eligible for the draft during the Viet Nam war. I told my parents I was going to join the Army when I turned eighteen. Both my parents discouraged me from doing so. They said to let them draft you. I never got drafted because of a high lottery number. To this day I feel like I et my country down. I would like to thank all who have served!!!

When I went through basic at Ft Benning, I kept expecting it to be like "Full Metal Jacket," but it never lived up to those expectations, so it was easy. Some kids couldn't handle it, though & they were the ones who quit, becoming "Sick Call Rangers."

I don't know what it's like now because I did this 8 years ago, but this still seems sooooo tame. Probably because of the cameras. I remember drill sergeants knocking people's bags out of their hands and throwing them as far as they could. Along with swiping PCs every chance they got.

Unfortunately from what I understand Harmony Hill is no longer. Went through there in 1986. The drills and training was far more brutal than the "Starships" barracks and training elsewhere at Sand Hill.. No worries, it did me good. "Break the civilian right out of them". For sure. To make an Infantryman, you got to make an animal. My 1st Sgt told me once "we got to treat them like dogs and feed them 3 times a day". For sure. That's what makes an infatnryman.
