I used to think these videos were cool, but after 4 years in and a tour in the Middle East I start to notice just how silly the whole cadet/basic training mindset is. Brett Biederman Counter argument, The Military isn’t really for people who roll their eyes at authority and think they are better than others.
@ourtube42666 жыл бұрын
DooBick I didn’t necessarily say I was better than these guys. I can see why you might think that but I should stress that I did almost the exact same thing through basic training, so I’m not in a position to assume superiority. In fact, I don’t even think that the initial “basic training” environment is a bad thing since it gives every soldier something in common and standardized the way we communicate/work on certain tasks. My main point is that forcecomm emphasized how I need to think for myself and get out of the by the book mentality thus the way I’ve been conditioned in the actual military is in direct opposition to the very first lessons everybody coming off the streets who puts on that uniform learns. Hopefully that makes sense, I’m not making fun of these young soldiers just thinking back on my own experience with a little irony.

Most of you "mama's" boys are brought up to think you should never be punished and use your ridiculous attitude to give your teachers in school a lot of grief. Most people like you think you can disobey the law.....it's sick. You think you're entitled, although in a different way.

At that point in the video, they were learning drill and ceremonies (basic marching commands). When in formation and following drill commands, you don’t do whatever you want. You listen for the preparatory command and then get ready for the command of execution to do whatever facing movement is ordered.
@mickbourne30282 жыл бұрын
@@sherbaum1985 just rewatched, looked liked what you said was true, but If I heard that and it resonated with me at this distance, what impact would it have with a new cadet, the rebuke or order we were given was “Do not anticipate the word of command!” Initiative is required at all levels of command, “A field marshal’s baton in every knapsack” indeed from my Corps during the First World War there was a lance corporal acting as Company Sergeant Major during a particularly heavy engagement
@jacobhaft97142 жыл бұрын
@@mickbourne3028 I mean the guy said "Wait for (all or the whole?) commands without doing things on initiative" which isn't really the same as what you said. I believe he's saying make sure you have all the information, and act according to that information instead of acting upon misunderstandings or incomplete orders. We are obviously both missing some important context to the situation, but what I assume happened, is he gave part of an order like "Put on your camelbacks and pick up....", some cadets started acting upon those orders preemptively by putting on their camelbacks, and he's saying "Wait for all commands without doing things on your own initiative", meaning wait for me to finish my mf sentence lmao. Plus, the cadets in the video were brand brand new, so taking orders and ingesting all of the information, an important aspect of life in the military, may be something that they've never learned. Also, these instructors are also cadets, so they obviously get some training in initiative throughout the process.

Don S that’s not how it works in practice, and least in any half decent unit. If a fresh LT let it go to his head then his superior officer or a Sergeant Major for example would be quick to reprimand them, their appointment position matters more than their actual rank, what I mean is a Regimental Sergeant Major has the respect of every officer up to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, who’s basically his direct boss, even though technically every rank of officer outranks him, ditto for a Company Sergeant Major and a Major, they’re in equivalent appointments in the level of the unit. And most officers know that while they plan and keep things organised their right arm comes in the form of NCO’s

@ryankuypers18193 жыл бұрын
Well it's all relative. The four years are training and also one of the best educations in the country which really opens doors after separation from the military. It's 3 years in the individual ready reserve, not the Reserves, which means you can be called back into service due to a war, but don't do the weekend per month and two weeks per year of drill. I had classmates pulled back in for Iraq/Afghanistan since they got out at 5 years and were still in the 8 year window. At 45, I can't imagine having gone anywhere else. It's an elite institution and the education is more or less equivalent to Ivy League schools depending on factors like major selection. In my humble opinion, it's a more well rounded education than one would get from Harvard or Yale because you are required to minor in an engineering discipline and also possess the physical and leadership aspects which aren't required at practically every other college or university. Former Marine here with a Naval Academy story. I had a buddy who went to Annapolis. He was a Sergeant who had done three combat tours in Iraq when he got his Academy appointment. He got in trouble initially at the USNA for laughing in the faces of the upperclassmen who tried to “stress” him by yelling or making him exercise. My buddy was a Bronze Star winner, had seen friends of his die, and no two ways to say it, killed guys in combat. The idea of him getting stressed by some pimply 20 year old is ridiculous. The good news is one of the senior officers pulled him aside and said look, I understand where you came from and what you’ve done but please, just go along to get along and graduate. My buddy did, successfully graduated, and is now an infantry company commander. After that conversation with the CO, though, the attempts to “stress” my friend went down significantly. Lol

I fondly recall my first days in the military. The haircut, collecting our military attire, and meeting our drill instructors. Growing up an Army brat, our introduction to boot camp held no surprises for me. While there were guys who were somewhat frightened, not one of them showed real terror. I recently spoke to one of the lifelong friends I made back then. We always bring up the time we spent during our indoctrination and chuckle together. Compared to our time in combat, boot was nothing. I think that if you're shipped off to fight not too long after you receive your specialized training, depending on your MOS of course, then I doubt your experience in boot will be poorly thought of afterward. At least that's how we think of it when my friend and I talk about it now. Seeing some of your friends killed in battle changes how you think of times like military indoctrination. Again though, those are only the thoughts of 2 men, other people may have entirely different ideas. For us though, it's almost always; c'est la vie, c'est la guerre.

I can't speak for military, but as law enforcement, I can say there is a mutual feeling. During the academy (depending on where you go) life is miserable. My academy was 6 months, it was hard on every aspect of my life and it even put a huge strain on my relationships. That was nothing compared to what I've gone through in 3 years of my career. Multiple partners being killed, seeing many more people murdered. At the end of the day, the academy, like military indoctrination, is a controlled environment. While difficult, it is quite safe. You realize that all the yelling and stress that was put on you was for a reason, and it was only to prepare you for the reality you did not yet know. The violence in law enforcement can pale in comparison to the military, I acknowledge that. But I see where you're coming from.

My dad who was a career Army officer wanted me to go to West Point but I had no interest after being a Army brat growing up. I regret that I did not have the discipline to apply . My utmost respect goes out to these young people that go to the military academies. Go Army

I grew up an AF brat with my two brothers; we had enough of the AF and all joined the Army, served and released honorably; I re-joined, in the AF and retired. My son had no interest.

I started life out as an Army brat in the mid 1950's. Turned 19 in Basic Combat Training. My youngest brother retired last year and was our first officer in the family. I have 6 other family members who also served in the Army and Air Force.
