RE your jumping/falling over a log: I have a couple of those moments. In Florida, a 2-star GO (name I can't recall) was visiting and wanted to "walk with the men" along with the RIs. He approached me in the PB and said "I knew your father. He was the epitome of a Ranger. He'd be proud of you." These things happened pretty regularly to me and I said "Thank you sir" and drove on. Once we moved out of the PB, and it was raining as we were wedging along. I was in the lead squad. Suddenly we took fire from the front. Rucks dropped and we began to assault towards the fire, moving in our RB teams. Dean Barnhart was my RB and we were doing the usual drill. The GO happened to be walking along next to Dean and me. I was behind a HUGE pine tree, sending covering fire. Dean bounded and yelled SET. I yelled MOVING. I picked my spot, jumped up and rather than going AROUND the HUGE pine tree trunk, I went straight INTO it, face first. Bounced off the tree and landed hard on my ass, blood already tasted from my busted lip. I must have looked like one of the 3 stooges, as I was sprawled out, agape at this HUGE tree that, somehow, I didn't see. Then I looked to my left, and standing there is the GO, looking down at me. His face reflected surprise and, NGL, judgment. I cannot imagine the thoughts that went through his head as he compared my dad to me, this boob who'd just rammed himself face first into a pine tree the size of a ponderosa. I'm sure he concluded that it was just as well that my dad was dead, so he didn't have to see this. I leapt up and resumed the bounding forward.

Cold , Wet, tired and hungry 9-74 (50 years ago today we were in Florida- wonderful training. i must say I was equally challenged in Korea , winter cold wet and responsible for those that knew if they got a cold injury you would lose your job and they would get a ride to the rear. The only way is team work.

Cliff hanger!! My son gave us a story on how cold he was at Darby.....and then realized that was NOTHING compared to Mountains! :) Can't wait for your next upload! Am loving all the details that he doesn't have the energy to share with me! Keep 'em coming.

whoa you are an astounding story teller! Had me engaged the whole time, even without any visuals. You should reach out to animators to maybe get this animated- that would be awesome!
