Sweden played a crucial role in detecting the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. On April 28, 1986, just two days after the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, radiation detectors at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden recorded abnormally high levels of radioactive particles in the air. Initially, Swedish authorities suspected a problem at their own facility. However, upon investigation, they determined that the radiation was coming from an external source. Using wind patterns and atmospheric modeling, Swedish scientists traced the radioactive cloud back to the Soviet Union. This prompted Swedish officials to ask the Soviet government for an explanation. Facing international pressure, the Soviet Union finally admitted to the accident at Chernobyl. This discovery was one of the earliest indications to the wider world that a major nuclear disaster had occurred.
