Could be partially or completely false according to the update: www.businessinsider.com/claims-us-buying-soviet-era-aircraft-from-kazakhstan-likely-false-2024-4 Remember, this was discussed on the show last Monday. We are not a news channel. We discuss what's already out there. The article above says Kazakhstan denies a transfer to Ukraine, but it is still unclear whether the U.S. bought them. The Pentagon denied comment according to this article. We'll probably discuss this on the next show. @themoverandgonkyshow

The idea that the US is sponging up parts for Ukraine's overtaxed air fleet is most probably true. How public they want that information to be is something else. Kazakhstan is still well within Russia's orbit. Medvedhev has even made threats against it due to what many russians see as their "disloyalty" to Moscow.

I know this is unconfirmed, and probably for good reason(since Kaz is technically a Russian ally still, so this is a little...spicy)- But, the idea of the US getting FOXHOUNDS , is INSANE- and i hope so- I know it wasn't exported- unlike the Foxbat - but, a Mach 3, 80 to 100k interceptor- no way it's not good for training since Russia till uses Foxhounds. And it helps us train against foes who have Foxhounds or Foxbats- as fighting Mach 3 jets with Kinzhals or R37s- isn't something we can properly simulate. We don't have A-12s or Blackbirds anymore- we DO have the F-15EX, but even if it can hit Mach 2.9, that's in a clean config, probably a dive on it's best day- so still not quite fighting a Foxhound ...It'd be the coolest training to see, seeing Raptors and Eagle EX's chasing Foxhounds for practice against Mach 3 capable interceptors

40 yrs. ago I read a book about the cold war going hot and an air-war over Asia. The theme was the Rooskie Mig could fly with a crew of 3 or 4 on the ground, a tool box with baling wire in it, land and take-off on a wheat stubble field, while the US jets required swept runways, a ground crew of 18. Maybe the Air Force needs to back-engineer a jet they can use over Asia? Maybe they're working on an option to invade Asia that does not include nukes? Anything that makes sense ain't an option.

It was more expensive to pay off the Customs guys to fudge the books so you could get 'em home. The Chinese were selling off MiG-15s and -17s by the handful. Some rich guy bought a bunch of -15s and the Chinese were so anxious to deliver them that they forgot to remove the guns and ammo. That was an awkward Customs moment in the port of Long Beach...ATF got a phone call when the Customs bubbas cracked open those shipping crates....

Neither Czechoslovakia nor Yugoslavia existed by 1992. You're confusing them with ex-soviet republics which did such things with their air forces. Matter of fact, ex-Yu countries were buying those aircraft from ex-Soviets, not selling them in the middle of bloody wars. Most notably Croatia, who got around 40 of those MiG-21s.

@@doimus Sorry but you could not be more wrong! Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia were not part of the USSR or ex-soviet republics but independant (communist/socialist pre 1989-90) countries. They were part of the warsaw pact however. Every ex-communist euro country post 1990 was like a giant military surplus store. Short of ships, everything was for sale. Even in thrift markets in the middle of Moscow you could find what you wanted! Getting it passed airport security and customs was an other story!
@doimus
@doimus 4 ай бұрын
@@fredericlepeltier3435 You've misinterpreted my comment, I've never mentioned them being Soviet republics. Also, Yugoslavia was never a member of Warsaw pact. But Yu itself dissolved in a series of rather messy wars in the 90s and now independent states were in fact *buying* weapons, not selling. Croatia bought most of its 40+ MiG21s from ex-Soviet republics. It also bought most of its transport and attack helicopters from Russia, through Ukraine, Mi-8s brand new in 1993 (and "returned" back to Ukraine just a few months ago). Never sold anything of that. Serbia even less. Macedonia also bought quite a few Mi24s and Su25s from Ukraine. Point is: nobody ex-yu sold anything to anyone in that period. Croatian Migs were cannibalized for thirty years, winding down to only 8 in flying condition, down from more than 40, and are finally being replaced by Rafale as we speak.

MiG21s are still in use in India and Pakistan, having shot down F16s. They are much faster than F35s.
@FactCheckerGuy
@FactCheckerGuy 4 ай бұрын
@@VidarLund-k5q The lesson since Vietnam is that fighters almost never fly much faster than mach 1 for any length of time in combat. For one thing, while a Mig-21s top speed exceeds that of an F-35, the (short-legged) Mig-21 could only maintain that speed for a minute or two (literally) before running low on fuel. That is why post Gen4 fighters don't emphasize top speed and don't make the sacrifices necessary to get a high top speed. It just isn't useful. As far as Mig-21s shooting down F-16s, I am not familiar with the conflict but could imagine that happening. Of course, a well flown F-16 would consistently eat up a Mig-21 in a "fair fight" but there are lots of "unfair fights" in the air and otherwise.

I agree with the idea these are likely spare parts, maybe a few adversary air, and possibly a three cornered deal, but, a small amount of MiG-31s could (presuming the Ukrainians can get trained up on them, and appropriate ordnance is available) give them a long range, heavy missile interceptor capability to think the herd of Russian long range cruise missile platforms. Taking out bombers and cruise missiles us literally what the MiG-31 was designed for, and current Russian long range standoff strike platforms are comparable in tech maturity to the US threats (Carter/Reagan era B-1, B-52, A-6, Tomahawk, etc.) the Foxhound was built to handle.

Back in the 1980s during the Cold War, I recall reading an article where LTV offered some MiG-21s for USAF aggressor training. Their pitch was why use a facsimile of the MiG-21 (the F-5) when you can have the real thing? They wouldn't say where they GOT said MiG-21s! That was always a mystery. Anyway, it appears that history is rhyming here... 😁 Oh and Fellas, there's nothing more EXPENSIVE than a "cheap" jet! I remember watching a KZbin video where a guy got an old Cessna Citation for $50K, and it needed a bunch of work to be legal to fly; it needed hot section inspection on the engines (or was it an overhaul?), among other things. Anyway, they had to spend six figures on that old Citation to make it legal.

If MiGs are falling off of trucks, I can probably find $20K. I don’t even need a 31, I’ll take a Foxbat and be on my way. The 4477th Test and Eval Squadron, Project Constant Peg (so to speak) and all the HAVE programs were a huge success for the Air Force in the 70s and 80s. Not only because they were able to provide dissimilar training, but they also trained other Red Air (mainly T-38 and F-5 guys) to fly and fight like Soviets. It was a tremendously useful program because at the time we just didn’t have a lot of real world intel to work with. None of these jets will likely be useful in that role since we probably know all we would need to know about them already but there is nothing wrong with having them available. We might learn something new, Ukraine might learn something new, maybe the parts can be useful to someone. At $20K each I say we buy the lot of them. We’ll find a use.

The Ukrainian Air Force has never used the MiG-31, since the 90s we have not used the MiG-23 and MiG-27, and the MiG-29 in their (probably) terrible condition is also only suitable as decoys. And, by the way, the MiG-31 is not nearly as fast as is commonly believed. The Russians converted them into carriers of “almost hypersonic” missiles and now these aircraft can hardly accelerate faster than M 1.5 (without air-to-air weapons on board).

This is not a true story. They did sell a bunch of jets, but these jets were reported to be in such poor condition that they would not be worth bringing to serviceable condition and were being sold as scrap. The Kazakhs released a statement saying, "The information disseminated on the internet [about the fighters] is not true... " The US also denies buying any jets from them.
