Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has told the BBC that a clash between the US and China is more likely than it was five years ago.
However, he maintained that the odds of military conflict are "not yet high".
The prime minister said if both nations continue to take a hard line because of domestic considerations, they could easily find themselves at an impasse.

@wUm Ao I totally agree with you. The West till today still practice their divide and rule method, and wants to impose n destroy other countries with their form of democracy. A very good example, Iraq and Libya. The leaders of these two countries are not perfect but look at these two countries during their rule and look at how they are now. Where were the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? None. Oh, and look at Syria now.

Very much one of the more important observation in this interview. And this awareness of China’s growing economic and military power has been pervasive way before Trump came to power. Hopefully, with the current Administration, this Sino-American power play may find a new equilibrium that would work out well for all involved. The world is getting ”smaller”, evolving and the “big man on campus” mentality cannot prevail if countries are to survive this pandemic, climate change, political and economic globalization.

@Ben Sasha His dad had his problems to deal with: To lead millions of uncivilized people of different races staying on patty fields and fishing villages, and to try to turn them into world class country and citizens. Lee Kuan Yew needed that iron fist and voice to make everything loud and simple to his uneducated citizens back then. Its really just, "I know where the light is. So shut up and follow me!" He had multiple problems on a micro (domestic) scale such as riots, housing, education, jobs, national development, military etc to deal with. Having settled all these basic issues and passed away, Lee Hsien Long on the other hand, faces a different set of problems: Macro (First world) problems. Millions of highly educated citizens who finds the government to be overstepping into their daily lives and freedoms of speech. We all know our young ones in the 21st century form their own views on matters at a very young age, and we can't simply brush them off just by asking them to 'follow instructions'. It takes a lot of initiatives to engage, debate, challenges from the public, and finding a common ground whenever a new policy is passed. If not, they leave. And because Singaporeans are so drilled into following a structured framework, there is also a lack of entrepreneurs or people with extraordinary talents in the fields of arts and design (generally, please don't flame me :P). There are also social issues like an aging population; and how Singapore (whom doesn't have any natural resources) could stay economically competitive and attractive to foreign investors amidst a world where the disparity between the educated and the uneducated is diminishing. These were all the smaller tradeoff from Lee Kuan Yew's very successful receipe to create Singapore that Lee Hsien Long unavoidably have to tackle. Lee Kuan Yew's method would not have worked, and I believed he would not have employed the same approach if he was in Lee Hsien Loong's situation. Hence, both can't be compared. At the end of the day, both are extraordinary leaders.

His father, one of our founding fathers of Singapore were of another level altogether. Singapore are like grass, when elephants fight. As a nation ourselves, we are transitioning into a 4th generation leadership. Our global economic arena is an ultramarathon race without an end. For a tiny city-state like ours to stay in the game, we can’t afford to trail behind the leading pack. To just win a prize (not likely the gold), we need to be two steps ahead. @@arminius6506 its a little easier being that he didn't need to get elected, but sure let's compare democracy to wealthy autocracy. Which is not a dig at Singapore. Its wealthy and to the best of my knowledge most are happy with the settlement as it has paid dividends creating one of the most advanced societies, at least monetarily with an excellent educational system. But the caveat is that where leaders are elected you don't necessarily get this, coz its a competition and at times its the loudest who benefit most. Larger countries also have more interests and strategic positions to protect, coz Singapore is basically a city state smaller than most large European and Asian cities.

Our efficiency comes at the expense of severely curtailed civil liberties.. in a way it's a Westernised China 😂 you probably think I should be more appreciative of Singapore's pro-business, pro-growth strategies.. but the reality is most Singaporeans don't feel the supposed wealth creation especially in the past decade; increases in costs of living have far exceeded wages. All I know is my quality of life here is far better than what it would be in Sg; here I get taxed more but paid better, can easily afford a house and car.. unlike in Sg where I'm having to pay and arm and a leg for a tiny flat and car prices are just unjustifiable 😂

Also very much a culture thing. You have varying degrees of democracy in politics and governing in Eastern countries, which does explain the level of success in containing the pandemic compared to European and Western countries. Don't include Australia in your list thanks, look at Australia and Singapore and our extremely close relationship and general policies. The closet bilateral relationship of Singapore is Australia, they are one of 3 countries permitted to do military training in Australia and have a permanent training presence here. The trio of Australia, Singapore and New Zealand lead the way in free trade deals and this shows up in the economic freedom index by Heritage Foundation, having top 3 positions currently. Between these 3 countries the bilateral plus multilateral trade deals stack 4 high between each country, so almost impossible to remove ourselves from this arrangement. I would agree that G20 countries tend to have more diplomatic issues, but this is a factor of a few things such as smaller countries know to be more diplomatic because no choice and even if they stuff up nobody noticed, for example if Singapore has some dispute with Malaysia it will only be local news, if it's between say Australia and China as is currently occurring it's world news especially in business. The Singaporean PM said China might be going down the wrong path which isn't good for them, it was diplomatic speak I think referring to how China bullies with trade which causes instability. Almost all of ASEAN plus Australia and New Zealand, have similar relationship with China and US, a balancing act.

@@cancangirl2888 If you look at the most successful countries in dealing with covid 19 it's the Western Pacific region of WHO and we all have 14 days mandatory enforced quarantine, Europe WHO region and PAHO Pan-American Health Organization regions all have 10 days voluntary quarantine for arrivals ( some exceptions recently with Canada and UK) . The West Pacific WHO region includes China down to New Zealand, ASEAN countries are split between this region and South East Asian WHO region which includes South Asia, probably second best performing region. Either remarkable coincidence or it's the regional WHO offices that made the difference, can't blame all WHO, the consistency of results in the regions. Singapore initially had a policy like that of Sweden but they changed course. Stopping free unquarantined travel is a must have component in containment of covid 19, about 250,000 people have been through hotel quarantine when returning to Australia, any country could have done the same, without this the virus will keep coming in in an uncontrolled manner, many of the deaths in Europe and US now are the UK variant, so more people dying from the more transmissible and seemingly more deadly variant that didn't have to be there. So can say regional culture , but has nothing to do with being "eastern" or something, virus respects 14 days mandatory quarantine but doesn't care about 10 days voluntary quarantine.

@@seansamlee6490 I totally disagree... but you have a right to your opinion. And yes, one will be arrested if one is convicted in a trial - for defamation (without facts). If your statements are correct, 90% of all the opposition party leaders would have been arrested by now. I have great respect for the current opposition leader sitting in parliament. He is articulate, has many great points... but is not arrested because he neither slanders nor defames.

There is a right and wrong answer to the question 3:29 the answer is the US. When the CCP comes creeping into to every facet of political, economic, and military life only then will you realize your people's organs are being harvested, people with religious views are being sent to concentration camps, and your natural resources are being stripped of your land.

You haven't watched Western media before. You sound like a person that says, "I own a truck, and it's so yummy when you mix it with milk before eating it". Everyone who knows what a truck is just laughs at your stupidity and your chronic lying problem, or they just ignore you. You wouldn't have "Muslim" and "products" in that list if you've seen more than a few hours of Western media.
