There is no strategic cooperation between US and China because u don't read on the history of US and its Anglo Saxons roots. Just give u one eg. Why is there a Chinese exclusion act for more than 60 years in America? Because the American workers can't compete with the Chinese workers in terms of diligence and efficiency and they force their govt to punish the Chinese for that. That is a basic mentality of the Americans. Any groups or entity, countries that constitute a threat to them will be dealt with harshly even though the victim compete fairly. For hundred of years, they have been like this. Japan is their closest ally. What happened to Toshiba? What happened to Japan's hope of overtaking US as the no 1 economy. Gone. Beaten up by its best ally and its client states. There is no strategic cooperation between US and any other country. It is always , She is at the top, the others have to work for her, getting a small slice of the pie if u follow orders. If u get too strong, u will be dealt with.

The white guy doesnt understand that China has grown up and wants its own freedom and choice rather than kowtowing to US all the time. Really he probably didnt understand or didnt know what Deng said to China's future leaders is for them to keep their heads down to US the west and build up the country and hide your strength. This white guy probably forgot what the western colonial powers including the US did during the 18th to 19th century to the Qing dynasty, waging war, looting the southern imperial palace, selling opium and getting valuable chinese porcelain, tea, silver etc... and also forcing China to cede Hong Kong to the British so that the opium can flow into China uninterrupted. And he keep asking the dumb question what has changed.....

Can you let us hear the speakers from their own voices instead of the translations? Much is lost in any translation. You can add English caption instead. Thanks.

Can you post the video with original language sound track? The discussion is excellent but the audio translation ruined everything. Maybe this is exactly what went wrong in China-US relationship: too much has lost in translation

The US-China sour relations today has it root cause way back about five hundred years. Since Europeans started branching out into the world in 15th century, they had gradually had the whole world under their control, though China at that point in time was still a strong nation. But it was a different story during d Qing Dynasty and British was d first to exploit China’s weakness and subsequently rest of Europe + US + Japan joined in and bullied China left and right. Hence a conclusion can be drawn: the Whites esp. US arrogant but gullible politicians hv had this mindset that China can never be at par with the Whites. It is a clear fact that d Whites hv had murdered, plundered, pillaged etc rest of the world and enriched themselves for centuries. Now that China whose 2022 GDP was at US$17+ trillion and almost with no foreign debts compared to US’s GDP of $24 trillions but national debts which a substantial amount is in foreigners’ hands at $33+ trillions, the Whites can no longer swallow a China which they hv had despised for centuries and helped out can now be at par with them. That is d root cause as US, Japan and a reluctant Europe are trying their best to suppress a rising China.

Could have been an acknowledgement of the PAP having assumed the biggest risk for our country, with populist policies extended to not only citizens but businesses as well. The government would do well to heed the minister’s advice and address the fundamental issues with the eventual removal of such policies in mind.

Trust lies in the heart of "co-operation." Without trust, there can never be co-operation. The US has been levying all forms of bullying on China directly and using its underlings. There is a huge trust deficit on their side. Therefore, from where comes the enthusiasm for co-operation?

Mr Schell said he was baffled no one mentioned Xi in the conference and that China's attitude was the root cause of today's conflict. Seriously, Mr Schell represents the old China hand and liberal in the West and despite his well intentions, his understanding of China is outdated and his understanding of his country today stays in the period after WW2.

Prof Orville was hinting it’s during President Xi era that tensions started growing until reaches the present state. With due respect the professor is slightly off track as we all knew it’s started when America began the pivoting to Asia. Many observers believe the American were alert of the rise of China much earlier and would have stopped China if not because of 9-11. This 9-11 eventually distracted the American and allowed Chinese precious breathing space because then China was still at germinating stage, though growing healthily.

With due respect to the esteemed professor, my humble opinion is that he is looking at China vai his American's lenses. Engagement in my view was ended by US's initialisation of the Containment policy towards China. Hence, it was Containment which ended Engagement. And the question is who is containing who? Do you seriously think USA will help China into the WTO if it knew China will become a super power?

The esteemed professor was selectively recalling events. Why didn't he quote the Cairo Convention. And also, the pro-independence movement in Taiwan came about a few year after Lee Teng Hui came on board and became more pronounced under Ah Bian's reign..

It is easy to have great relationships when one of the parties is willing to go along with US arrogance and European colonist mentality. The relationship between China and the US began as enemies. As enemies, the US learned to respect China as an adversary. China's growing pains under Mao led to a strategic relationship that began with Nixon. China was happy to help in undermining the Soviet Union in 1971. When the US decided to exploit the Chinese market, the US found a willing partner who cautiously tried to revolutionize entrepreneurialism in China. Deng Xiaoping took notes from THE SHIP OF FOOLS and allowed individual and state capitalism to grow. This naturally led the US to think that the US system of governance had reached its zenith. Deng allowed US hubris to take center stage because it was in China´s interest to keep a low profile. By 2008, China had become a middle economy. China became the most significant manufacturing country soon after that. China was ready to be open to itself and the world with Xi Jinping's selection. With the growth of China also came a more open confrontation with the US. China will become more meaningful to world governance as the world becomes closer to Eastern philosophy. The US and European era of colonialism has reached a point of diminishing returns. A new era of multipolarism is here. China will continue to usher in this new era. The rest of the world hopes that Western hubris will die to favor respect for the sovereignty of nations and cooperation for the betterment of humanity.
