At approximately 9:30 AM USCG received a distress call from a vessel just off Mantoloking claiming he lost power and is drifting into the beach. A nearby good samaritan vessel was first on scene and observed the person on board was ok and had dropped anchor and set his trolling motor to maintain is position as best as possible to not beach his vessel. Shortly after the 47ft MLB from Station Manasquan Inlet arrived and communicated with the captain on how they were going to tow the vessel out of the surf. After a couple of attempts of throwing a tow line, they finally could attach the line to the boat in distress. The sustained wind and swell conditions did not help as it shifted the boat and line and the tow line was now wrapped around the prop and the boat. Soon after the captain with help from USCG was able to straighten the line just as the boat drifted into the surf… The MLB then towed him out to deeper water and kept the tow line in place due to the sea conditions. He was towed back to Manasquan Inlet fuel docks. No injuries were reported.

This was painful to watch. The MLB coxswain needs more stick time. Way too much time assessing and setting up. That should have been done on the way out, not on scene. Keep the stern of the 47 into the waves, it's way easier to control and you can protect the crew working on the bow. Have the crew work off the bow. Once you get him hooked up you can pivot the 47 into the waves and then transition the tow to the stern tow bit.

Lots of 44/41/WPB coxswain / helmsman tow experience here. Any thoughts why the trolling motor was not shut off? Lots of errors on both sides and good old "loss of situational awareness"

Somebody take the keys and give the guy a set of golf clubs. Im sure that boat came with more than 50 feet of anchor line, but apparently common sense wasnt part of the package. The fact he caused an emergency response because he couldnt figure out how to anchor a $300k boat in 20 feet of soft bottom long enough to call Sea Tow is ridiculous.

Great footage of the "so called" recue/tow. Very hard to watch indeed. More training needed by the coxswain's boat maneuvering in the rough. I realize it was in the semi surf, but come on. Use this as a training video CG. As far as the boater being rescued, keep the boat at the dock or on trailer and fish off the bank. As I said in the beginning, GREAT FOOTAGE!!

We retired after 30 years in the CG Aux. We have literally done hundreds of tows and I never did one this poorly. We would prepare for the tow while enroute to the scene. I can’t believe how long it took them to get the tow equipment setup. When they first communicated with the disabled boat they should have made sure he was wearing a PFD. They also should have had him clear the fishing poles that were stowed upright in the bow because the heaving line would get fouled in them, and it did. The Coxswain should have made a much closer approach to the disabled vessel so the crew could make the passing of the heaving line on the first shot. And after they missed on the first shot the Coxswain should have learned that he/she needed to make a closer approach but he/she never learned that lesson. Once they had the tow line attached they should have immediately towed him offshore slowly to get some sea room and then take a breath and make the tow line properly attached for the tow home, but first get the boat offshore. As it was they were extremely lucky that the boat didn’t get further into the surf zone which can be deadly. I hope that someone in command sees this video and uses it to do some remedial training on this crew. Thankfully it did work out but with this quality of a towing evolution there will come a time when they will injure, kill someone or sink a boat. 0:14 0:14 0:14

He didn’t listen to what they said and fumbled the line overboard with the d ring… they were trying their best to tell how to do it. If you’re going out to sea you should be able to perform tasks like catching a line and attaching it properly in seas. It’s just part of owning a boat if you’re not ready for the ocean stay in the bay.

I have towed in vessels of that size with my 27 foot sailboat and only a 9.9 HP motor on it. Give me a break this was a very simple straight forward and easy tow assist job. In 50+ years of boating I have never before seen the USCG be so undecided about what to do. Very painful to watch their inability to make a simple decision of just throwing the guy a tow line upon their arrival on scene. The USCG should of had the tow line all ready to go when they arrived on the scene. My guess is that this was a USCG aux. reserve crew, not a regular full time USCG crew operating the vessel. PS: The in-distress vessel operator was a real totally clueless armature and of little help. Walking and chewing gum at the same time would be a challenge for this skipper. IF possible always tilt your OB motors up out of the water when being towed.

How? Coast Guard threw the line perfectly after couple attempts with sustain winds, it was definitely challenging. If he did what they said in the first place, it would’ve been a one try and pull him out, but he couldn’t get the d ring attached and then he lost the line. It went overboard and they had to redo it.

@@jerseyshorefireresponse The MLB coxswain should have turned parallel to the beach (to starboard) when that line wrapped around the boat. That would have avoided all the rest of the mess. I'd assume it's a lack of experience on the coxswain's part. I guarantee when they review this video for training, he won't let that happen again. Footnote: I was coxswain qualified on both 44's and 47's so I'm not just armchair quarterbacking.
