Love your channel my brother! I'm a retired CWO2 and former MSTCS. The MST rating provides LOTS of civilian employment opportunities, IF you take advantage of every opportunity to gain specialized training and work experience. Based primarily on my safety knowledge/experience, plus the FOSCR qual, I had a very lucrative career as HSE manager for an offshore oil company, then became VP of Safety & Environmental Management Systems (SEMS) for a Houston-based oilfield consultancy.

I was an EM2, but I went a whole differently direction after getting out. Back in 70's / 80's (all) Coastie did law enforcement, so I was sent to Modesto, Calif Police Academy. My interest went to law enforcement, so after getting out I finished up with my B.A., went on to becoming a Police Officer, and eventually too a (21) year career with the Justice Department - I have been retired now for 11 years... The Coast Guard was a great stepping stone, so take advantage of it and find the job that best fits you!! Semper Paratus!!

I realize looking back I didn't give an exact answer to how long it typically takes to make any particular rank, other than discussing the minimum time in grade requirements. For an idea, here's my timeline. E-3 - 6 months E-4 - 6 months E-5 - 3 years, 3 months E-6 - 1 year, 9 months E-7 - 11 years, 2 months
