US Dockworkers Strike Shuts East, Gulf Coast Ports

US dockworkers have walked out of every major port on the East and Gulf coasts as the International Longshoremen’s Association seeks higher wages and a rollback of the language on automation in six-year contract that has now expired. The affected ports have the combined capacity to handle as much as half of all US trade volumes, and the strike will halt container cargo and auto shipments. Bloomberg's Brendan Murray reports.

That salary is before taxes, union dues (which goes to healthcare and pensions), and other deductions. Not to mention the job has a higher on-the-job death rate than firefighters and police officers. Wonder if these longshoremen would have been better off investing some of that 40 dollar an hour takehome instead of blowing it at the strip club after work every night.
