I never thought I'd say this, but in many ways I agree with the strikers on this one. Automation takes away jobs, something we need badly. Also these jobs aren't the safest by far, and they have to work in all weather conditions which doesn't help. The cost of living has skyrocketed, and they work in high cost of living areas. The blame needs to be put on elected officials for stupid policies and corporations for lobbying for them. Follow the money, and it all leads to DC! Politicians and corporate elites all work together!

how about the cost of living to others. we are retired and since bidenenomics we are barely scratching by. if it gets worse and inflation goes up , we could lose our home because my taxes and cost of living will gut us. unions are important but the whole of people shouldn't pay for the sins of corporations and government. automation is inevitable and all over the world. if the don't use some automation . the dock workers will fall behind other ports . the businesses will find other ports or ways and they will find up losing their jobs. you dont think, because the elites doesnt suffer, they can wait it out, buy automated equipment and just fire inefficient humans or hire illegals for 50 percent less money. one of the reasons for "border czar" to keep the borders is the " slave labor " wages. you think the government cares about people?

@@highwayydre There is no industry that hasn’t changed over the last 130 years. Technology makes our jobs easier and more efficient and safer in many cases. The U.S. is undermining its competitiveness by not embracing technology in critical transport modes. With that being said, going fully automated is not optimal, but completely abstaining from automation has proven inefficient. For example having automated cranes can be less efficient than human operators. But automation can improve the efficiency of moving cargo through the ports and into the hands of the truckers or rails or etc. For many decades now the ILA has always kept a bad reputation with truck drivers. Many truckers have said “dock workers are the laziest assholes who just stand around.” That’s one of the reasons why Daggatt is pushing so hard with the strike. He knows nobody likes the union anyhow. But if this strike continues, the USMX might reroute to the west coast and to non unionized ports, costing many ILA worker their jobs. The shipping/trading are the blood vessels of the body. If u pinch a major artery to ur arm and overwork that arm, the damages may be irreversible. There is a finite amount of shipping containers in the world. 50% of America’s export and import is done through the East/gulf ports. More than half of US/UK owned cargo vessels are now rerouting through Africa due to the Houthi attacks in the Suez/Med, costing 6-8 months in delays. If the port strike continues past October, we will see a disruption in the global supply chain of shipping containers.

Oh wow! Look at all of the experts on union contracts and negotiations. I guess you guys passed in your healthcare, vaccine and economist licenses. What none of these newscasters will tell you is that over the last few years the ports have made BILLIONS, not millions. Now the ports are trying to force workers out by automating their jobs. Oh yeah, they'll harp about $100/hr salaries but not tell you the average dock-workers are struggling with a salary FAR BELOW that because they actually care about their retired brothers. That salary is before taxes, union dues (which goes to healthcare and pensions), and other deductions. Not to mention the job has a higher on-the-job death rate than firefighters and police officers. So yeah, F*CK the port owners... they can have one less house in Aspen and one less yacht!
