Reports of the demise of the Panama Canal have been greatly exaggerated with apologies to Mark Twain! There is also a fully operational transcontinental railroad operating... It is called the Panama Railroad. However overland transportation of goods really only lends itself to container traffic. Bulk cargoes, liquids and LNG/LPG are transported more efficiently by ship. Bribing to get to the head of the line is not how it is done at the Canal. Everyday the Canal offers one transit in each direction to the highest bidder. If it is worth it for your ship, you make a bid. No bribing involved. The highest bid recently was for just under $4 million. Rains have returned sufficiently to raise the daily transits from 24 lockages to 32 lockages as well as the draft limit has been raised to 45'.
