In the royal dutch navy we dont have any nuclear submarines as we are a small country with a small navy. I am my self not in the navy but i as far as I know from people I know who are in the military the marines get all the training like arctic and jungle warfare but hey wil later specialise. And we do have a coastguard (very small 2 real ships or so) but they mostly are for customs. and in the beginning of the video you saw them clear a mine those are still from WW2 and that is an cooporation between our 'coastguard' and the navy.

I get the mistake tho. In old Dutch, we used to spel Maarsk as Maersk as well. If you aren't from the Nordic, Germanic area, these language look very similar. The Dutch also provided military support for Maersk to make the mistake even easier to make.

Little fun fact during huricane katrina a dutch navy ship was already providing aid before fema or american military arrived. also a little know fact dutch submarines sank more japanese ships in the pacific war in the early months than the US and British navys combined. Also a fun fact dutch navy subs had snorkels as early as 1936 on uss cod there is a martini glass as it rescued the crew of one of these o18 class submarines one of the first subs to actualy be operational with snorkels. Also the Belgian navy is incorporated in to the dutch navy as the benelux navy .

some more fun stuff, the goalkeeper (machine gun on the ship seen in the vid) is a dutch invention bought by america it is one of the most advanced anti missle guns on earth and calibrates every shot to the previous shot fired. Fun fact is that the US Navy didnt want to go closer to Iraq in the first gulf war than their dutch frigate escorts were allowed to by the dutch government. The first marines were used in 1200 in Italy, these were later disbanded. Then in 1537 the Spanish marine corps was founded and is the oldest still active marine corps. Then in 1664 the Royal Marines from the United kingdom were founded. Then in 1665 the Dutch marine corps was founded. So we're the 3rd oldest active marine corps.

Thought it nice to respond as Dutch Navy Officer: explosion you saw is a seamine being detonated by a remotely operated vehicle, like the orange one you saw launched just before. Its true navy and coast guard work closely and in the caribbean navy does quite a lot of CG tasks. Dutch navy doesnt have nuclear subs, still diesel electric. Theyre still quite decent tho due to being expeditionary (longer endurance) and silent. Armament are heavy torpedoes and Subharpoon missiles (fitted for, no longer fitted with).

@@feralgrandad4429 The golden era, when the Netherlands was still the dominant superpower on this planet. That is untill we got into a war with Napoleonic France, with the French eventually being victorious over the Dutch. During that war the Dutch were pre-occupied with more pressing matters and hence were unable to simultaneously defend their colonies as well, which the British cleverly took advantage of and seized upon. And from then on the British were the dominant superpower which lasted for at least a century or more, with the biggest empire in history and where the sun never set. Fortunately these days we're indeed at good standing with each other, and a very close ally which we much appreciate!

Anglo-Dutch cooperation, in my opinion, started with the "Glorious Revolution (1688)." Ever since, both countries have been supporting each other and cooperated overseas. Thanks to the British Empire, the Dutch were allowed to build their colonial empire in the Dutch East Indies. The British' thinking was: we know these chaps and better that they are in control of the Indonesia Archipelago than the Spanish or Portugese. The British having their hands full with India of course. After the French Occupation (or French Time because half of the country was pro-Napoleon, the other half were Orangists), the British were such good sports for returning all of the Dutch East Indies, which they had occupied after The Netherlands 'went French,' back to the Dutch government. Not many people know this but Napoleon sent his younger brother, Louis, to be his puppet for the 'Kingdom of Holland,' first time The Netherlands became a kingdom. With a Frenchman as our first king! However, as the Dutch had 'gone French,' so King Lodewijk (Louis) 'went Dutch' and became less and less cooperative with his big French brother Napoleon. He refused to root out illegal seatrade (smuggling) with the English and he would not send the required number of troops recruited from The Netherlands, to fight in Napoleon's wars. Furthermore, he gave help and money out of his own pocket for survivors of two national disasters that happened during his reign, one of them being a munitions ship that exploded in Leiden (151 killed, 2,000 injured). After Louis outright refused to receive French troops with an official celebratory ceremony, he was recalled but instead of returning to France, he went into exile in Austria. *Oops* went a bit off topic there but it just shows that the English were rather forgiving, even after the Dutch flirt with their arch enemy France.

In 1989, naval analyst Norman Polmar wrote in Naval Forces that during NATO s exercise Northern Star, the Dutch submarine Zwaardvis was the only orange (enemy) submarine to successfully stalk and sink a blue (allied) aircraft carrier Ten years later there were reports that the Dutch submarine Walrus had been even more successful in the exercise JTFEX/TMDI99. During this exercise the Walrus penetrates the U.S. screen and sinks many ships, including the U.S. aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71. The submarine launches two attacks and manages to sneak away. To celebrate the sinking the crew designed a special T- shirt. Fittingly, the T-shirt depicted the USS Theodore Roosevelt impaled on the tusks of a walrus. It was also reported that the Walrus also sank many of the Roosevelt's escorts, including the nuclear submarine USS Boise, a cruiser, several destroyers and frigates, plus the command ship USS Mount Whitney. The Walrus herself survived the exercise with no damage.

Hi ! Daughter of a dutch naval officer here. About your coastguard remark. Like the US, the Netherlands used to have a Naval Aviation Service (1914) who were indeed responsible for search and rescue operations. Unfortunately, due to ministry of Defense budget cuts this part of the Dutch naval tradition was disbanded in 2008. The Lockheed Orion planes were sold and the navy helicopters (Westland Lynx) were later transferred to the Dutch Air Force helicopter squad. Since then, Netherlands Coastguard fully took over these tasks.

That huge underwater explosion was mine clearing. There are a lot of WW2 mines still in the north sea, so NL helps to clear them too. Nice vid, cool that you took a look at our navy :).

They played it very smart! Because they are not nuclear powers the carriers and supporting ship could not detect the submarines. They laid without moving in the course the carrier was coming and shot. In the beginning of the video you can see a helicopter taking of from a ship. That’s a NH90 my favorite. In a couple years I am going to start the training to fly that beast! I still need one more diploma and I can start the training. 6:56 We do have a separate coastguard that does have tasks like (medically) assisting ships off the coast, securing the Dutch coast and stopping drug smuggling but it's more smuggling through small (sailing) vessels from neighbouring countries. The marechaussee (military police tasked with security of the kingdom) and navy are tasked with stopping smuggling through big intercontinental container shipping which is the bulk of it. As for the anti piracy, that's because piracy isn't really a thing off our own coast but it is in the gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia.

A dutch marine rucruit here🙋🏻‍♂️ our marine corps is a department of the navy, and we actually are mistaken a lot for sailors. The origins of the marine corps was a group of highly trained soldiers that lifted along with ships to fight battles at ships, and do amphibious landings. Nowadays our marines are highly trained, and special operations capable. We don’t really have specialized units for certain enviroments, but once in a while we are being trained in country’s like: norway, which is a cold weather and wardare training. Scotland, which is a mountain/wet weather training. Belize, which is a jungle warfate training. We also go to the US once in a while to have desert warfare/desert training. Our motto is qua patet orbis: as wide as the world goes, so basicly every marine is capable to be deployed around the world within 48 hours. We also have a highly trained special forces unit called MARSOF, considered one of the best in the world.

At 4:16 is the big SMART-L based on active electronically scanned array radar (AESA). It picks up stealth aircraft, so the US wasn't so thrilled as Hollandse Signaalapparaten (now Thales) developed it right along while the US was developing F117 and F22, hahaha. I was doing an internship at Hollandse Signaalapparaten back then and was in that radar test room. Those spikes are made of foam by the way and in that room is where they calibrate each and every AESA radar tube (that AESA radar concept is widely used in many land based, airborne, and Naval radar systems by the way) of a particular AESA based system. Fun fact: the SMART-L is so powerful, it disturbs seagulls in flight when too close. Where conventional radar can already give you a warm feeling in your head, you really cannot be out on the deck when the SMART-L is active. Mind you, it is basically a giant open microwave. While testing the APAR on the roof of the Signaal premises it disturbed electronic devices, like supermarket's cash registers in the town of Hengelo.

Interesting how the auto-translate sometimes translates the music into [music], [applause], and even some words xD Also some poor choice translations that don't really make sense in context (to be expected) but even a word-for-word translation shouldn't have produced that result :o As for the submarines, the Dutch navy has 4 Walrusklasse (II) submarines build in 1990, 1992, 1993, and 1994. They're conventional diesel-electric subs allowing for smaller size and silent operation when using the batteries. The plan, at least for now, is to use air independent propulsion systems when the 4 subs are replaced (so closed cycle diesel, fuel cells, or other). They have 4 21" torpedo tubes and are outfitted with 20 Mk-48 or NT-37 torpedoes, or 40 Mk-46 torpedoes, or 40 naval mines. Originally they were expected to operate for 25 years with a special upkeep program needed halfway through, but since they've operated so much in coastal and shallow waters the wear on everything was much less than expected and their operational time was extended to 35 years. Since the Netherlands no longer makes subs the replacement starting in 2025 will be the first time since 1953 that a non-Dutch sub will be used by the Dutch navy (the USS Icefish and USS Hawkbill were bought and re-christened as Hr.Ms. Walrus and Hr.Ms. Zeeleeuw respectively). Fun fact, the 2 US subs we bought in 1953 were the first Walrusklasse subs. Since then we've had the Dolfijnklasse, Potvisklasse and Zwaardvisklasse (II). Before that the British navy build the subs we had, chronologically; 1 U-klasse, 1 S-klasse, and 4 Zwaardvisklasse. And as probably a whole lot of people have already commented, there's the famous joint exercise in 1999 where the Zr.Ms. Walrus tagged the USS Theodore Roosevelt twice and 8 escort ships before slipping away unnoticed. I even found the T-shirt the crew is said to have designed to celebrate a successful operation: www.dutchsubmarines.com/boats/images/submarines/boat_walrus2_tshirt.jpg Also I'm pretty sure that 'sound proof' scene is a radar test or maintenance location since radar behaves very similar to sound.

The Dutch, under nominal command of Willem Joseph van Ghent and Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, over several days bombarded and captured the town of Sheerness, sailed up the Thames estuary to Gravesend, then sailed into the River Medway to Chatham and Gillingham, where they engaged fortifications with cannon fire, burned or captured three capital ships and ten more ships of the line, and captured and towed away the flagship of the English fleet, HMS Royal Charles. Politically, the raid was disastrous for King Charles' war plans and led to a quick end to the war and a favourable peace for the Dutch. It was one of the worst defeats in the Royal Navy's history, and one of the worst suffered by the British military.[1] Horace George Franks called it the "most serious defeat it has ever had in its home waters."[2]

The black panel in the room with the spikes is a radar mounted on top of ships, it's probably in a room to measure something with the radar and the spikes are to muffle radio wave reflections because it's a wave like sound

The room with spikes is a deadroom for sound and/or electromagnetic waves. It is used to measure equipment without any interference. The spikes are shaped this way so that waves can not be reflected. In this room the true sound or electromagnetic output of the equipment is measured. The Royal Dutch Navy is called Koninklijke Marine. The Marines are called Korps Mariniers. Like in the USA they are not the same. There are also the Coastguard (Kustwacht) and SAR (Search and Rescue).
