I lost my son in Afghanistan they got him at 17 to enlist and waited for his 18 yrs when he graduated he immediately joined . He was also promise a lot of accolades . I tried to get him out because he also wanted out but they kept pressuring him about jail or a discharge that’s not honorable . He stayed because of these threats I wish I would had fought harder I thought he was trapped with no way out . Then after death his master sergeant said there was a way out now after but while he was in no one said anything . Definitely I been grieving the family will never be the same and I know he died a hero but for me I’ve always said it was a scam . RIP my dear son your sacrifice will never go unnoticed .

And I hope the US stops fighting useless wars, invasions, and imperialism that is killing our people and others people en mass.

I spent 6 years in the Navy starting at 17. I lived on the ship and sent every check home and was able to buy a house when I got out. I didn't even have to use my VA Home Loan, which allows you to buy a house without a down payment. My federal veterans benefits paid for my undergraduate degree and Texas Hazelwood veterans benefits are now paying all of my daughter's undergraduate tuition. The VA covers my medical care with just a small co-pay. Being a veteran has even helped me get jobs. I didn't join for benefits, but because I felt a duty to my country. Service isn't for everyone ...try not to complain too much get what you are there to get out of your enlistment and bounce. Here's something they won't tell you. When you make it back to your hometown, Everybody will still be doing the same thing they were doing when you left. You're not missing anything. Make the most of your situation and document every medical injury you receive with medical while you're in service... so you have evidence for the VA when you get out.

If you can tough out the 20 years you get to retire at earliest 37 or in your 40's with a pension and get paid for the rest of your life just for existing. Along with super cheap healthcare. Being active duty doesn't really start paying off until you hit E-5, and even then, depending on what command you get, it may suck so much that you dont want to stay in. I'm currently an E-6 at 10 years and I'm pulling my hair out, because I want to get out so bad. I joined the Navy right out of high school back in 2002, and to this day, it's been one of the best decisions I ever made. I was able to get bachelor's degree with tuition assistance and GI BILL. So no student loan debt for me. Also, I was able to purchase two homes through the VA home loan program. The interest rate on my current home is 2.63% and I do not have to pay mortgage insurance. I'm now receiving 100% Va disability compensation due to the PACT ACT President Biden signed in 2022. With my current disability rating, I no longer have to pay property taxes. Also, my dependents can go to any public university for free under Chapter 35. Last, my veteran status helped obtain a great paying federal civil service job. I would never discouraged anyone from the joining the military because I know how life changing the benefits can be. The military is what you make of it. The only regret I have is not putting money into my TSP account when I first entered active duty.

Eligibility for military occupations are based on how you score on the ASVAB and some other factors that vary depending on what the specific occupation requires. The exam provides an idea of your potential to learn certain jobs. You don't need experience because the military trains you on their protocols, regulations, and how they need to perform the job. The job training length depends on the job. It can range anywhere from four weeks to two years. I know some websites say up to 52 weeks, but that does not take into account language school for the linguists. Many languages are a shorter length. That also depends on the language. Another observation, the soldier that is complaining, is still in training herself and does not know what life in the real Army is like, nor has she even started her job. She is also not taking into consideration that housing, meals, and health care are being provided to her completely free of charge. Not to mention, she can get college credits for the Army training she is receiving. A lot of people these days end up with less than what she has after paying for all of those expenses.

Most jobs in the military are 7:30 - 4:30 with a one hour lunch break. While you're in the military will pay for your BS, and all your medical, vision, and dental are covered. Plus in relation to the cadence if your gear is lost or stolen (lots of thieves in the military) its comes out of your checks

The U.S military is just like any other job. There are pros and cons, good days and bad. If you have other options I'd say don't join, unless that's what you really want to do. However, if you have limited options and choose the military, go in with a plan! Talk to more than just the recruiter, talk to other veterans of verying backgrounds, and asks lots of questions.

okay. I am a usaf police veteran, from the late 1900's. The military is not an answer for your life problems. The military is going to use you and try their best to discharge you in a way that they do not have to pay those benefits that the tv commercials talk about. The government wants to use you, without paying you for the rest of your life. Your supervisor will be unqualified and probably throw you into the line of fire, to cover for their mistakes. Oh, the military does not like alcohol or parties or clubs. If you give them a reason to, they will reduce your pay. Join the military ,if you want to sacrifice for people that do not care about you. Join the military if you want to live your life on a probation sentence with constant micro management.

I joined the Navy after getting my Associates degree in Business/Accounting. I chose to go the Enlisted route instead of Officer. I have zero regrets. The military like anything else is what you make of it. You get three hot meals, a roof over your head, free medical and dental. If you are smart, you don't blow all of your money on take-out and drinking and you should have enough to get your own place when you get out. You get the "experience" that many companies are requiring to hire people. If you have student loans, it can get paid off. I make six figures, my house is paid off and have zero debt. I attribute it to my time in the military. People are going to complain regardless. My son served in the Marines and he has zero regrets as well. Just make sure not to sign any contracts unless it states your desired job (MOS), otherwise they will stick you wherever needed or doing something that will make life miserable for four years. Is the money great? No, but when you take into consideration that you don't have to pay for housing, health insurance, get on the job training , GI Bill to go to college and can buy a house with zero down when ready, then those benefits are worth money and make up for the pay. It's a job like any other job. The difference is you are expected to not act like a fool out in the civilian world or get yourself in trouble. The discipline and what I learned in the military is what helped me get to where I am today which is not struggling like so many are today. I am blessed.

My stance on rhis issue. If u live in a country that gave you deserved opportunities through your hard work and sacrifices that I is one thing why one might feel patriotic. On the contrary seeing so much socioeconomic plight, injustice ,poverty, broken life and health, one feel disdain . Here goes the question. Why should u join military and riisk your life for the society that is like incompatible with your inner self. When matter collides with antimatter, inihilation results, the law of physics is so correlated here

Wow I had a completely different experience and I would recommend it to strangers and my kids. I think you need to have goals and in life and work towards them and have an upbeat attitude and you will have a good experience. Join with a guaranteed job that you are interested and work towards your goals while you are in. Don't drift and just looking for a good time while being paid. I did 10 years in IT and translated that to an IT job as a civilian. Don't join to travel and to get paid because you may not travel as I did 10 years in California while visiting Saudi & Iraq and your pay is OK but not great. I was able to get my degree, certifications, and experience and translated that to the civilian world.

The military stinks moreso because of the types of people that join. The military should stop lowering their standards. The personnel are no different than the filth you see in school or at Walmart. If you do join - score high on the ASVAB and secure a technical job that will transfer will into the civilian sector (IT/Data Analyst/Bits) etc.
@JackDutch-b2n
@JackDutch-b2n Ай бұрын
Getting a high ASVAB score does not guarantee you a higher job. The military can put you wherever they want. They can even alter your contract at any time. You thought you signed up for a job. The military can change that at any time.

@ewidontlikeyou 26 күн бұрын
@@JackDutch-b2n That's now how the Navy works. Sailors choose a rate at the beginning for what they qualify for based on our ASVAB results and we remain in that rate. Are you referring to when the country isn't a peace-time or something? You must be in a different branch. From what I've seen, those with intel rates, stay intel or IT, etc.

I laugh at so many folks opinion while serving, many never lived on there own and do not realize how expensive it is to live on your own. One lady on here explaining her schedule, problem is, that after an hour of PT from 630am to 730am coming back at 930am, she is leaving out the part of at 1130am she most likely goes on lunch break until 1pm and after 5pm formation has really worked 7 hours for the day, now there are always wrenches thrown in there, but add in weekends off for many, not all soldiers and now you had a 35 hour work week, she excluded the free rent the barracks or housing provides, the utilities paid for, the meal in the dfac if she uses it. It comes more closer to 30$ an hour and is not bad for a young person just starting out, at 19 i had a 3 bedroom and 2 bath house in housing, but for my job, we always deployed and many times on just 1 shift, i was a cook and working 6-7 days a week with 15-16 hour days, for me i realized i would make more working at burger king and cross the street to mcdonalds if i was going to work these hours, now the guys in my infantry or field artillary units talking about making more money getting out, i would tell them, make sure and do the math, your getting paid a lot more than you realize. I would here I am going to make 20 dollars an hours back in the day, i would tell them, your going to need to make a lot more than that to live on your own in the civilian world.

You also get really good benefits in addition to that pay. Your housing and food are either provided or subsidized (additional tax free money on top of your base pay). Health/dental/vision for you and your dependents. Life insurance is pretty cheap. All the branches offer some form of tuition assistance if you wanna go to school while active duty. Many members will also qualify for the Pell grant in addition to tuition assistance. When people say “Oh I bring in like 2k a month”, that’s true but they don’t have to use it for basic necessities.
