Our facing movements are different for a few reasons. One we have brass on our heels. Makes the clicking noise. Two we have taps on the bottom of our shoes so we don't want to slip. 3 we do 4-6 funerals a day in Arlington putting fallen sailors (brothers and sisters) To rest a day, can't do regular facing movements because it will tear up the grass. We also do a lot of other events in the Navy Yard on the CNO's lawn. (Commander of Naval Operations) 4. We don't over exaggerate our movements to look flashy. We do everything ceremoniously because it gives cues to each other. It's not about looks or pride it's about dedication and respect. Don't disrespect the guys burying Navy Seals.. You spend a day in Arlingon you do 6 funerals in 100 degree weather with bugs crawling all over you watching families die inside because they just lost a son a father a brother an uncle or whoever it may be. Then ask us why we do different movements than you all.

Fake. There's not a sailor alive who thinks that CNO is the acronym for Commander of Naval Operations.

Our major appearance was a halftime show at the "East -West Shrine game at Los Angeles colosseum. These guys look much better than we were!! If opportunity allows, be sure to see it!! Those"guys" put in many hours of practice, and all we ever got was, we went first in the chow line !!

@CaptGolightly Likewise - I can identify. Somehow, I found myself in "Special Units" in boot camp, and stayed with drill teams through two enlistments, and three commands. We could only muster an 8 man team, and often it was only 6. Of course - we doubled and tripled as honor guard, sideboys, landing party, and boarding party. Destroyers don't have enough people to train separate details!

i was in the navies Operation Specialist A school crack rifle drill team in 1983 and we had 30 members in our company .our officer made us drill with the bayonets on sandbag dummies,he said if we were going to have bayonets on our rifles we will learn how to use them as a weapon. we did several field parades during my time in the unit once for president Reagan and the secretary of the navy. i do believe we were head and shoulders above the marine unit who also performed at them.

@MUZIKFREAK93 When I got to bootcamp, it was early in the week. The administrative people were busy setting things up, and they didn't yet have a company assigned to "Special units". Basically, that covers everything that regular training companies DON'T do. Our 100 or so people were just herded into Special Units, without any explanation to us at the time. As you can see, it's pretty random. We learned too, that we would not be in "normal" company competitions.

Drill team takes a long time, there are specialties, you cannot learn all the drill. At least not in enough time for them to use you. All the different command for firing party alone takes a good bit. Plus, with drill team, they have to develop muscle memory, and trust, in each other. The different platoons really stick together, in my experience anyway. Colors, we were squared away, usually taller, and everyone was a little aloof. The bearers were just tanks.

Ever seen the fierce Maori dance? Ceremonies exist in many form, it's about order, tribe, communication, and being as one. This is literally a ritual, don't freak out, so are many of our customs, from baptism and formal traditional weddings to this to football games. Yes, your football game is nothing more than a giant ceremony, that has been used to entertain and make money. Warpaint and chants, in fact even Fred Meyer had a advertisement saying "let the ceremony begin", with a Seahawk fan wearing paint. We are not all that different from ancient tribes, if you actually look at it.

I was pissed. We got caught 'dipping' during training, yeah, they spread all our uniforms out and fucked us with the dip juice, we had it stored in starch bottles...so bad.
