When I was 10 in 1998 I rode that vessel across the Bass Strait. 1 engine stopped, 2 engines stopped, 3 engines stopped, we had one engine left. There was a storm. Waves were crashing over the entire vessel. At least double the height of it. 550 people were on the boat, 550 were crying, being sick, and praying. It was a miracle we made it.

The company I believe you are referring to is Incat which is there and that vessel as with many others where built there, The other larger building of high speed ships in Australia is in Perth, Austal.

@RemBot2000 Yep but the funny thing is that ship is actually Australian (Incat), its rented out to the US Navy, also the really cool LCS Independence is also an Australian (Austral) designed and built ship. I guess that makes Australians cool too right :)

I've been on a smaller one of these Wave-Piercing Catamarans as a passenger. The ship building factory is in my home town of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. I used to work in a Zinc Smelter adjacent & we'd often see them departing the port for sea trials or off to the new owners... If I recall correctly, this ship fitted out at that facility, as I've seen at least one of them in US Navy colours along side.

From one Pete to another,you guys drive on the wrong side of the road. Glad I arrived there on a Sunday afternoon so I could get experience driving on the road. Got time for the Salamanca market and it’s cousin. Yes you probably saw the US Navy colors at that time the ship was getting refitted with the small boat launch and retrieve function and a great voltage/frequency converter Kiwi made. Could take in most every known voltage and frequency and convert it to US standards. Good techs those Kiwis. For those who might not realize it, a lot of vessels do not like to run their engines while in port. Gives the crew time to update/repair/tweek the shipboard systems and the inport sea water isn’t the cleanest, it cuts down on noise and port polution.

@greenkwaka Yea, average speed they travel at.. though they can reach speed's of up to and above 50 knots, But this may be where it's not yet economical so they don't go that fast. Top speed of any Austal vessel was one of the one's they delivered to Oman, reaching 56.6 knots with an average speed of 52.5 knots.

@infokemp No beach out of reach? :-) I think it was a sad day when the Channel Ferry stopped. Right up there with the last shuttle flight. I'm not sure if you could make a "stealthy" air cushion/ground effect vehicle. Look at some of the Russian assault GEV's or the Ekranoplan. Iran has built a groovy little GEV that looks kinda cool. Making a vehicle "invisible" to radar or thermal targeting is one thing, but making a vehicle "invisible" to optical target is much harder.
@MrVonnoobie
@MrVonnoobie 12 жыл бұрын
@cyberteque Actually landing right on the beach little difficult, While they have a shallow draft, it is not designed for beaching itself, As such no vehicles can deploy from any area on any beach, However they are ideal for deploying vehicles and troop's from small ports common in every 3rd world country and even in many modern countries, Advantage being they can deploy a fuy combat ready Stryker battalion in less than 15 minutes as well as take the battalion back aboard in the same time.

@cyberteque Thank you for the information. Sounds like a good design, I also like hovercrafts although the general view is that they are noisy craft they are very good for commercial, rescue & military purposes they move so fast the enemy are not certain if it is a helicopter making the noise or a hovercraft, the hovercraft is very tough and stable at sea as well as being immune to conventional pressure plate mines & obstructions - we should build more - whats your view? All the best David

@cyberteque Odd, Seeing as all actual information goes against that... The Stryker can only ford water up to above the height of the tires, And as the vessel was designed strictly for water use.. Not for the force of ramming a ship against the sand bed of a beach.. Not to mention the ship in question launches vehicles from the rear/side, All beach landing vessels launch them from the front. To reverse the vessel up to the beach to launch the Strykers could get the water jets clogged and useless.

@Joemensa We could first strike North Korea and take almost no loses. 100-200 w88's with 400kt yield fired from 4-5 subs. The flight time would be as low as 5 minutes from subs in South Korean waters. It could be done.

but joemensa,wouldn't it be much easier to supply them with contaminated uranium, perhaps with a shorter half-life than anticipated, resulting in premature activation, such as on the launchpad or on board one of their subs? would have to be a mutual effort between the u.s. and russia since we have the technology and russia has a majority of the uranium.

They should have scaled up this design and used it for the LCS. Or with a few modifications, and trading her cargo capacity for 500 tons of armor and weapons, she'd make a really sweet Corvette. Would probably outrun and outfight the LCS or even the new Zumwalt class "Destroyers" (actually the size of a Frigate, but armored like a soda can and waaaaaay too complex.)

Actually using a trimaran vessel would make it cheaper to transport the troops and there equipment then using aircraft or other ships. They use less fuel so are more efficient then steel mono hulled ships, and well takes too many planes to airlift all the equipment that a single HSV could carry.
@MatthewEast1989
@MatthewEast1989 11 жыл бұрын
Actually this ship is a bargain, Though have shown that one of these ships can do the work of more then a dozen C-17's, So bang for buck these ship's are actually more economical then any of your heavy lift aircraft, Not to mention from these ships forces can deploy rapidly and ready for a fight (400+ men and all there combat vehicles and supplies unloaded in under 15 minutes) where C-17's can deploy troops but almost no combat vehicles etc..

The fuel savings from the design is incredible compared to what you would rather have with your pound, sheckel or what ever, that's why you don't get what you want while the guys at the US Navy get what they want, a superior design with unequeled manuverability, speed, low radar signature with excellent fuel savings. The savings alone will far out weight the cost because it's not that expensive at all. Do some research before you stickem foot in mouth! It's business mate!

wow.. wasted thrust.. should redesign marine jets to come out of the hull about 20 feet or more in front of the transom in a hydrodynamic azipod so it can change outlet direction. .. there would be increased pressure to thrust against the denser water under the hull instead of the water 30 feet behind the transom..

Low draft was no doubt part of the design (12 feet IIRC). This is a standard commercial ferry hull with some post-building adaptations for military use. It's Incat hull 050, originally named Devil Cat. It's now Manannan, running between Isle of Man and Liverpool.
