Two of my favorite players of all time. Epitome of two contrast styles of tennis, one of them does not exist any more. What made it especially entertaining was, as contrast to likes of Sampras, there were a lot of reasonably long and fun rallies in Edberg's matches. It was so much fun watching him carefully constructing rallies to win a point instead of mindlessly serving or bashing balls.

This was THE US Open to watch Edberg. Michael Chang said Edberg was "on fire" and he was right. He was superb throughout the tournament and even crushed Courier in the final.

Lol, I never heard any american tv commentary say anything positive about Lendl´s game. ;) Well, his tennis was good enough to gain him eight US Open final appearances - in a row, winning three of them. That says something about what a great player he was.

I always thought Lendl had a beautiful top spin backhand and a disciplined game. But, then, I'm not an American TV commentator.

can't believe how empty the stands are. Here you have 2 of the 10 greatest players ever of the modern era. That place should have been packed !!!!!!!

These are two of the greatest of all-time, but amazingly this is typical of Super Saturday - used to be billed as the greatest day in tennis. Both men's semi's and the women's final are played in a row. If all go the distance - as they did one year with Cash/lendl, Navratilova/Evert, Connors/Mac, (what a lineup) the crowd can be in for up to TWELVE hours of tennis. So....they often trickled in during the first men's semi. The 2nd men's semi is the marquee matchup. Some years Lendl/Edberg could be that match, but since this was 1991, and James Scott Connors was in the semi's, Lendl/Edberg were the 2nd rate match. lol.

Yes this was the first match on that super Saturday from memory. The crowd was still coming in.

One of the real problems that there was with scheduling at the US Open. The players used to hate it. The first of the women's semi finals often used to start with empty stands too

Lendl had an almighty though draw. He had to beat Kryijack, Ivanisavic and Stich. Too many 5 set matches.

wow, i'm sure noone really reads these comments anyway, but i think mary carillo said it well in the beginning: lendl's shots look more taugh, edberg's game has the beautiful grace. edberg was my idol and hero growing up. i did like lendl too, and appreciated what he did for tennis.

Hey kiddos....the thing Edberg is doing is called serve and volley...its when you run towards that thing in the middle called the net...just so you know...

I watched this match straight after watching the 1986 edberg / Lendl semi. The main difference between the two matches seems to be Lendl's movement. He seems noticeably slower and sluggish here. His previous matches to get to the semi final probably took a lot out of him, and the older you get, the longer it takes you to recover.
@archangelmusic13 Жыл бұрын
i dont agree, lendl took out 3 serve and volleyers in previous rounds in Krajicek, Ivanisevic, and Stich. you have to be able to move well to beat those serve and volleyers. edberg was just the best volleyer on hard courts at this time.you can actually see the difference in edberg from 86 to 87, his legs were bigger and stronger and he moved better and he could really challenge lendl on other surfaces than australia where he was invincible there.

Lendl beat Krajicek, Ivanisevic, and Stich on fast hardcourt to reach the USO semi's in 1991... probably one of his most underrated career achievements.

Lendl hated to play against Edberg... in one interview said he never understood his style and could not read it (he used to joke with him in a way "how can I get your forehand, when you play it like you dont have an idea where you are aiming")

Think Lendl also had real problems dealing with Edberg's kick serve up to his backhand

Thanks for sharing! First Edberg footage I've seen in ages, and it's nice to be reminded how natural and elegant a player he really was. Lendl's game was just brutally effective...but that hat has to be the ugliest ever seen on or off a tennis court!
@knchen10 жыл бұрын
edberg had the best one-handed backhand in all of tennis. as of today, i still haven't seen a better one-handed backhand. (although justine henin's comes close)
i've seen them all. edberg's is still the best. justine henin's comes a close second.
@sharpasaneraser8 жыл бұрын
you must be referring to edberg's backhand's aesthetics. it just wasn't as versatile nor as consistent, nor as consistently powerful as the other ones i mentioned. *{i'm sure edberg would be the first to admit it}. i stand corrected: Edberg is on record having preferred his backhand to Federer's. lol

yes, edberg's forhand did look very week, so it does make sense that lendl would say that. I think both of these players weekened after this year. My father's friend told me he thought Edberg had peaked after he won the Open in '92. In Edberg and Lendl's quarter-final match that year, it was competitive as could be, but they didn't whale the ball quite like here. More tentative in that one.
