Being a Swede my favorite is Mats, men you must also love McEnro. He is such a marvelous man. Then you must feel sorry for Becker with all the economic trouble he has had in his life. Lendl is for me nothing.

For whatever reason, Becker seems to have this mental hold on Lendl who normally has a crack at his rivals. But in this final he almost seems resigned to not being able to beat Boris.. he doesn't engage in enough rallies.

Great tennis from two legends of the sport. Seeing how good Ivan Lendl played at 32 years old with the new racquet, he should have switched to a bigger frame some years earlier.

Lendl was great because he’s actually a pusher on his slice backhand and hits hard on his forehand … sad u don’t see players like this anymore

Lendl was involved in two similar matches in which he came out at opposite ends. In 1984, McEnroe was nearly unstoppable and won the first two sets against Lendl pretty easily. But Lendl came back and win. In this Match, Lendl was the heavy favorite and won the first two sets. It looked like a routine straight set win and yet he lost in 5.

Stunning performance by Lendl against the young gun Sampras, Lendl was such a great indoor/carpet player... and those blistering and accurate shots with that little racquet were outstanding! 👏👏👏

Lendl’s game could work in today’s tennis if refined well, but McEnroe’s game wouldn’t work in today’s tennis.

Wow, watching about half the way, I thought that Lendl would win. He was shooting many winners. Both were playing amazingly. If Lendl played like this back then, there were not many players who would beat him. But Chang did it. What a guy!!!! But I still have to admit that Lendl's running fore and backhands are even artistic!!! Chang hit very far from where Lendl was. Many would think he was not going to even reach those shots. Lendl not only did reach but did make winners in responding, amazing!!

Lendl domination in Tennis from 1985-1990 is ultimate and should serve as motivation for all the young tennis players of present generation who lack in Consistency, determination and dedication.

This is one of very few five set matches Borg lost in his career. Typically, it was a young Lendl to pull that feat of, Borg at the time being nr. 1 in the world. Borg certainly would have had a lot of trouble in the future with Lendl, who is the godfather of power tennis. But of course, this was never to happen. Such a pity to have missed it.

Anyone know the final scoreline? i think this would have to be the oldest match footage of Lendl available. I don't think any footage exists from his 1978 junior truimphs at Wimbledon & the French nor from the 1977 Orange Bowl

Becker fan. His best year in tennis probably. So exhilarating a player, so frustrating a player. His individualism was both his strength and as time went on his demon. Always his own man though. All in all I think he handled things well for a kid with so much on his shoulders at the time. He could have easily won 3 or 4 more slams. Sometimes less is more though. Boom boom!

Krickstein has gone down in the records books as the youngest man ever to win an atp title, barely 16 years old that might never be broken but despite his powerful physique perfect for tennis he never developed a big weapon a Becker serve or a Lendl or Jim Courier forehand or a Agassi level of grounstroke power so his career kinda hit a ceiling that plus he was very injury prone so he left the game early barely at 29 years old.

I remember this Lendl match as a true display of all kinds of forehands: volleyed, passings, lobs, with great forcefulness. That day he was inspired and the machine began to crush his rival mercilessly, although in the end it almost got complicated, I suppose because he was relaxed, believing that the match was over before time, and Wilander was quite combative and didn't give up easily. Two days later (final) the inspired one was McEnroe playing the first two sets in an overwhelming manner, although Lendl also made the mistake of playing too far back, waiting too long for the ball, and an sublime McEnroe took advantage to win them quickly. However, in the 3rd set the course of the match changed little by little, with the American losing concentration and nerves, which together with tiredness and Lendl's stoic resistance, Czechoslovakian (at that time) managed to turn the match around in an epic comeback.

I wanted to witness a McEnroe tantrum and so I watched some tennis. Then they panned out to the other courts and there was this guy who could hit the ball within a few inches of the line when others struggled just to keep it in play. This was the beginning of my fascination with a man who would redefine how the modern game would be played. From Ostrava Czechoslovakia 5 years world number one and 10 years in the top 3. The man I put second only to God Evarn Lendl!

All of this players from the 80's should take over tennis so we can watch cool and fun tennis. Today's players most of them hit the ball the same..same style.
