The tennis federation allowed the removal of wool from the tennis balls replaced it with polyester fibers. Bigger rackets. Changed all court surfaces to play basically the same. Equals a monolithic sport

Still remembered I put an alarm at 1.30 am watched this match in DD. Die hard Fan Edberg, that day Edberg simply superb what a serve and vollyer I had watch full match those days. Now a days serve and volley game completely wiped out . I like players of Edberg Becker, Stich, Yanic Noah all are masters of serve and volley players.

Lendl did and does like & respect Edberg for what he achieved & they got on as people on the tour as I understand it from various sources. An observer below commented that this match saw some bizarre play from Lendl who had indeed crushed Edberg a fortnight before in New Haven & had an astonishing record second to no one of 8 singles finals on these courts so in fact would have expected probably to have had a much closer match & probably to have won it. However I read years ago (& what is less well known) is that Lendl found out that August prior to this US Open the cause & extent of the damage to his back which inhibited him considerably during this match along with the hand surgery he had had earlier in the year. Although the hand recovered the back just got worse and ultimately caused his slightly premature retirement in 1994. Premature in that he was basically still competing at the very highest level when medication or therapy had alleviated the pain - check out the 1994 Sydney final against Sampras & the Oz Open that year. Some astonishing play during a short period where he could mover more freely. Damn bodies. They break!

The way Edberg played vs Lendl In this match, and the next vs courier, there’s no Lendl that could have beaten him.

@@iamtman1 ..peak Lendl at US open could have definitely beaten Edberg. Post Wimbledon 1990, Ivan was no longer a force. Even Edberg said that 1985 to 87 Lendl was almost impossible to beat.

Dont know how many noticed but Edberg had some "pop" going on his serve in the semis and particularly in the final against Courier. Normally his serve was set up for the volley, but in some of these matches in the 91 USO, he did up the ante on his first serve. He also generally appeared a bit more muscular than in the previous years.

What a brilliance by Lendl that back down, at that stage moved the better; was an all round. Edberg could play as well off the court, Lendl could not cover more. 11/10 😘Hypothetically it's true that Lendl lost to Vilas, Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Becker, Cash, Wilander, Edberg. Was Bill Tilden the best player in Us open history combat. As teenage fact. Bill Larned as latest at 42: yrs. Sears being the third by winning margin of 7: we can bury 'em in peace.🤑
