Speaking on Tonight with Andrew Marr on LBC, Dr Stein also urged former UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn to join the Green Party, telling Andrew, ‘I had the pleasure of meeting with him around the UN Climate Summit, and I think we see eye to eye on just about everything.’

There are a lot of answers to that question. One is where the political centre-ground is in the US. Another is the constitutional system and the reality of the electoral college. But there are others as well, such as perception. The mere fact that most people assume a third party category can't win would operate even if the electoral college disappeared, though given the anger at the two main parties it might not matter, a lot of people would love to protest vote if they weren't afraid of the consequences. And that's of course toxic to democracy. Transitivity violation is one of the more serious things an electoral system can get wrong, because it prevents a vote from serving its function of reflecting the will of the voter. If you hate the democrats, but you hate the republicans more, voting for a third party candidate makes it more likely you get the worst of all worlds, rather than an outcome more aligned with your values. That's true on the right and the left, of course, I merely picked a side. But the fact that people have to hold their noses and vote Biden out of fear of Trump is inherently anti-democratic. But the electoral college is nearly impossible to get rid of, of course. And that is the most intractable obstacle to third parties being viable. It's not even the voting system, states can and have adopted different models for that. It's how the result is filtered. For instance here, let's say you hate the tories as so many do based on the polling. There are cases where you'd have to vote labour because your constituency is only competitive for the two biggest parties. But for lots of constituencies that isn't true, you can either vote for a third party because it won't significantly impact the result, or you can vote for a third party because they have a reasonable chance to win without advantaging the Government.
