The reason for the predators struggling in AVP 1 is because the humans messed up the ritual. Its essentially a ritual for teen preds to graduate into adulthood. None of them has ever fought a xenomorph before. If the ritual had worked correctly then the three preds would have started with their plasmaguns and only 8 xenomorphs. The humans started the whole process to early and left the unblooded preds unprepared and underarmed

Honorable mention goes to Alien Isolation. A great survival game with enough enemy variety to be fun, very unique mechanics, insane details and sounds the devs took very seriously to recreate, and a nice bridge between the first 2 movies. They were some great moments like Waits ejecting the Alien with Ripley still in the station module, Samuels the MVP beating up synthetics and sacrificing himself, destroying Sevastopol, and the rest of the game with exploring the Alien nest and the reactor core having to avoid synthetics. They were also some cool little things like Ripley’s Sr message to Ripley Jr and the fact that there really was an Alien queen on the station but the devs wanted to stick to the stealth and not include a big alien fight

Predator 1&2, including the first AvP movie are my favorites. Predators was an pretty good attempt to bring life back into the movie side of the franchise. But genuinely if the fat cats in Hollywood had got off their asses and did a little digging into what was working in the other parts of the fandom, they would have found an entire treasure trove of amazing comics, games, and spin offs that do a much better job at explaining the convoluted lore than the current crop of writers ever could

Possibly Controversial Opinion: The Star Wars movies are fine, but watching them this many years later, I just can’t take it that seriously. The lightsaber effects and CG explosions and lasers are so fake it’s hilarious. Yet despite Alien only coming out a mere two years after Star Wars, it steps all of the effects up by a huge margin. The costumes, the effects, the sound effects even are excellent and still hold up pretty well. I think this has a lot to do with their choice of using practical effects to showcase the Alien while Star Wars relied on CGI which I’m sure looked great at the time but looks like it was made by a 4 year old today. And it doesn’t stop there, the WAY that all of these effects are used is perfect, especially all of the puppets, props and creature designs. The idea of the facehugger attaching itself to a victim, knocking them out and implanting an alien embryo into them perfectly triggers the gross-out. The ambiguous prospect of the xenomorph lurking around the ship, travelling through the air shafts, unable to be found perfectly triggers the terror aspect. And then of course, there’s the infamous chestburster which knocks the horror aspect right out of the park and I don’t think any horror movie has ever soared that high since. Alien is a masterpiece and one of my favourite movies of all time. Aliens is pretty good too but it just can’t top the first. And the sequels are all pretty meh if I do say so myself.
