US release footage of drone crash with Russian jet - BBC News

The US military has released footage of a Russian jet crashing into one of its drones over the Black Sea.
The US said the damage to the large drone meant it had to be brought down into the water near Crimea on Tuesday.
Russia had denied its Su-27 fighter jet clipped the propeller of the drone.
The BBC has not seen the events before or after the collision.
The US initially said the confrontation lasted around 30-40 minutes, but the released footage lasts for less than a minute.

Yes, of course this is international airspace, but Russia warned that this part of the Black Sea is in a war zone, you can’t fly there. I am going out on a limb here and say that there was no direct contact between these two aircraft. There is no bent prop on the drone in this footage. What brought this drone down was the intake of fuel from the SU-27 dumping it on the drone. Causing the engine to stop from too much raw fuel in the intake. Whoever wrote this article needs to do their homework on this. Even the weight and mass of the dumped fuel would cause the prop to stall unless it was restarted. That is a lot of fuel being dumped here that would knock anyone down if hit by it one the ground. As my Jewish grandmother would say. ( Trust me what I am saying. )

When I first seen the video of the Jet and drone, I thought it looked pretty hokey, assuming here that the fuel dump spray was intended to be picked up by the drone's air/engine induction scoop, thus enriching the drone engine’s fuel to air ratio, this fuel enrichment might result in performance changes with-in the drone’s engine ( Honeywell TPE331 (military designation: T76) turboprop engine ). With the above in mind, the closing jet appears to release the fuel spray quite prematurely, as it would seem that the jet should have started its fuel release much closer to the drone and then lead out in front of the drone for the fuel spray to be effectively delivered to the drone’s air intake, this big cloud of fuel trailing behind the offending jet that is closing on the drone does make for a good dramatic video (maybe movie magic) for public consumption, but it doesn't look to me to be very real or functional. The damaged prop tip: Looking at both the Jet and Drone's attitude being in a gentle starboard roll as well as the location of the drone's prop and tail stabilizer/rudder’s related position to one another, it appears that about the only way the Jet could have made a slight non catastrophic contact with the drone's prop, would be if the Jet was able to at closing speed, thread it's starboard wing tip - at a starboard roll angle to line up the angle of the Jet's wing to the apx. angle of the drone's port stabilizer angle , mind you, thus threading the wing tip through a space between the tip of the drone’s prop blade and the drone's port rear diagonal stabilizer/rudder with the jet’s wing tip following a short semi parallel path up the back and slightly off to the port side of the drone’s fuselage. I don't know what the odds against doing all that without a catastrophic collision between the two aircraft are, but those odds must be phenomenal, and yet that's what the video is suggesting that we are to believe (unless one really thinks that the jet's nose cone touched the prop at that closing speed without major incident, probably tearing off both of the drone's diagonal stabilizers/rudders in the process) ..and there are a couple of other small discrepancies in the video that I'm not mentioning here just to keep this comment short. Myself, I'm going to continue to lean toward this released video as just being a bit of dramatic movie magic cooked up for a mostly western audience, the Drone video just looks too hokey or noticeably contrived.

Pretty sure the fuel-dumping was 'sausage party banter' (perhaps prompted by non-specific 'harass' orders?) and the collision was unintended.
