Liston seems like a humble guy, shame his legacy never reached its potential and all his dealings with the mob, two legends of the heavyweight division. Liston vs Foreman would have been a crazy fight

Joyraj Ghosh I think Liston would win by tko but definitely he would get dropped. Yeah he doesn't get the credit nor did he reach his potential, as he was involved heavily in the mob and an alcoholic and drug user. Had he reached his potential maybe Ali never would have beaten him

Joyraj Ghosh but Ali was not in his prime aged 22 when he fought Liston, so maybe a young Ali loses to prime Liston? Prime vs prime though Ali would have knocked him out

Before the fight, of all the fighters asked about the outcome, only Marciano was on point. "Don't fool yourself, this kid can fight, we just don't know if he's rugged enough". Later on they found him to be the best taker of all the heavyweights.

@Denny Hala He said it at every interview when he was asked. When he was getting paid, especially in cash, he would analyze it. I first heard him say it 1964 before Clay/Liston. He didn't think much of Liston as a fighter.

Before Cassius Clay it was Gorgeous George--a professional wrestler in the 40's and 50's. It's been chronicled that Clay/Ali took a lot of Gorgeous George's antics and made them his own. And before Gorgeous George it was wrestler Lord Patrick Lansdowne...it keeps getting passed on and on....

Liston was not prepared for Ali in their 1st fight , Ali's speed and the ferocity of his punches surprised Liston , by the 3rd round Liston and his corner knew they were in trouble , Liston was a tremendous puncher ( ask Floyd Patterson......L O L Floyd was terrified of Liston ). In the above interview at this point kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJC5k6KiltBlh80 Ali shouts "I don't get hit...". Liston replies "That's what I'm afraid of" (if you listen closely). Earlier in this interview Sonny told the press he trained for 15 rounds of running and fighting. Sonny Liston and his team WERE prepared for Ali's running, movement and speedy defense tactics. He knew it would be difficult to hit Ali. Although he fought very well many folks mistakenly believe Ali dominated Liston in this fight. In fact Liston fought well too. One judge had Liston winning after 6 Rounds, one had Ali ahead and the third judge had it even. Liston had trained hard for a long fight (even though he flashed two fingers in response to Ali holding up 8). His plan was to pressure Ali and finish him in the later rounds. Watch Liston's win in his brutal slug fest with Cleveland Williams (1st fight) if you think Sonny didn't answer the bell for the 7th Round because of two abrasions under his eyes. Liston could and did take much more powerful punches than Ali hit him with in Miami. Sonny Liston stopped because of a serious shoulder injury, later verified by an independent doctor (so his purse would be released). He tore his shoulder in Round 1 exacerbating an injury that occurred in training. The only "trouble" Liston and his corner feared at the end of Round 6 was that Sonny was a one-armed boxer.

It was here that Clay won the fight. Nobody wanted to fight Liston. Liston not only was intimidating-he was good. But yet he had this young kid bragging that he was going to beat Liston and do it convincingly. Mind games. Clay was a master at it. Plant a seed of doubt in somebody's mind and that seeds grows quickly causing self-doubt. Liston didn't look all that confident sitting there.

In 1964 the fact that Sonny could've easily now been in his mid to late 30's fighting a fresh faced 22yr old Ali 🤷 ...well you can't really brag about being the greatest when you're fighting a man 10 to 15yrs your senior. In some reports according to Liston's sister, she puts his birth year even as early as the 1920's which is astounding considering there is no official record of his birth. So in actuality the so called self proclaimed greatest of all time won the title from someone who was getting on in age but still Sonny put up a good fight. Rip Sonny 🌹🙏🥊

Liston was a better puncher than Clay, but, he wasn't fast enough, didn't prepare himself well enough and he also could've been a lot older than they said he probably was at that time. His personality however was much more humble - better in my opinion - than Ali's. But, he lost, fair and square. Ali did a great job in the ring with Liston.

Ali was humble . Look at what he did outside the ring. Funny that there are people who can’t see that he was obviously putting on a show to entertain the people and to get them go see the fight, and after every match i saw him compliments his opponents even when they weren’t really good he still complimented them , he was a humble down to earth man who loved people and doing good things. He even said that he was only acting like this to make the fight exciting and so they can sell the fight. He made boxing entertaining and made boxers more interesting rather than them just setting quit and not entertaining and taking everything seriously.

@@sel1414 Liston started orphanages in Philly, St. Louis, and Las Vegas, visited sick kids in hospitals showing up at their schools for surprise appearances at the drop of a hat, literally giving his phone number out, the man even gave out his phone number to a sick child and gave him the opportunity to have a ringside seat to one of his fights. Liston publicly in an interview stated that after he retires he wanted to work more with children specifically impoverished and underaged youths across the country for uplift in exercise camps, he also participated in the freedom march in Denver along with 500 other people to urge congress to pass Kennedy's civil rights package despite being denied the right to participate in the Freedom March by the NAACP even after begging for public support.

Liston beat Patterson mentally and physically that's why both losses were so devastating.Ali beat Liston 90% mentally and 10% physically.The more he talked in this press conference....the higher the mental % went up.

He wasn't lieing when he said boy you gone be so tired in five rounds, Sonny was done by round five.vy six he stayed in his seat at the Bell sound. Sonny was done , he knew it by the end of the first round, his goal by then was just to buy time, from Clay's( a k.a. Muhammad Alis fury🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥) ole Sonny was humiliated!!!!!

@BillyBob-wg8gr 3 жыл бұрын
Lets not get carried away. Sonny was done because he re-tore an injury in his arm that he had suffered during training in the 1st round. Not because of "Ali's fury". Ali wasn't even close to being as hard of a puncher as Cleveland Williams, and Sonny had taken all of Cleveland's best brutal shots. The fact Sonny went as long as he did with basically one healthy arm was pretty impressive. And the 2nd fight, of course, everyone knows that was fixed. Sonny took the dive.

Typical media BS as far back in he sixty's makes you wonder what BS is in 2022. Sonny Liston would of beat alias Muhammad Ali easily, it was a PR stunt to promote the chalanger would beaten the champ. The mob who controlled sonny Liston from day one when he was released from his prison term. A champion would fight till his last breath, but he sat in His corner and gave up. He is a man far from giving up. He became a man in his teenage years. Fighting for his freedom and food to survive each and every day.. He had so much pride in his Heart and skills of a promising heavy weight boxing champion. He lost before the fight began. Look at the last round were he decided to fight for his life and show the world he is not a quieter or a pay off fighter. But he was approached sitting in his corner for the next round and the mob told him it's over. Thats were I would of love to hear from sonny listen why. But he wouldn't talk because his life would be on the table
