US Sugar Harvest and Rail Operations

The Florida East Coast Railway Society members were invited to a private your of the US Sugar harvest and rail operations. We were allowed up close and personal to all of the action - here's a good part of what we saw.

The video takes me back to my childhood in Puerto Rico. There's nothing like seeing a sugar cane field fire. The sound can be frightening but the smell is awesome. Cool video.

My family lived in Clewiston as a child I was there from 1960 to 1969. Watch these fields burn many times. On the other of the blaze, everything ran out, snakes, rats, opossums, rabbits, and a few things I did know about.

I'm a Greyhound driver and cut through these fields between Clewiston and Belle Glade on the way to W Palm. Just curious to see how everything comes together in the end. I seen the fields. Seen the fires. Now I see the actual harvesting. P.S...also see all of the rabbits.

In Brazil burning the canefield has been banned for over 5 years, our machines are able to harvest the cane without burning.

It self-extinguishes when it runs out of dry vegetation to burn.

--The dry brown leaves burn pretty quickly leaving the moisture full stalks undamaged. If left at the point the stalks will resprout new leaves.
