US Tests Top SECRET Hypersonic Aircraft to Beat SR-72
Hermeus’ hypersonic Quarterhorse jet might just be the jet of the future, possibly retiring even Lockheed Martin’s jet of the future - the hypersonic SR-72 - before it sees the light of day. The Quarterhorse has broken new grounds and the United States Air Force is more than impressed. So much so that they’ve awarded the start-up company a $60-million contract to flight-test the Quarterhorse.
The Quarterhorse is estimated to travel Mach 5 speeds - five times the speed of sound - on a single go and is based on the Turbine-Based Combined Cycle - TBCC - engine, which combines a supersonic turbojet engine with a scramjet, which is simply a supersonic combustion ramjet engine. This engine configuration means the Quarterhorse would perform effortlessly well at whatever speeds - be it the relatively low commercial airline speeds of today or at hypersonic speeds that would leave even fighter jets in the dust.

Having seen the very first SR 71 in a hanger in 1965 at Fort Worth Texas was like seeing a true UFO at the time . No questions about it dark black color to add to its very strange shape . This is now something I was able to sit in at the Boeing plant . As well as having full access to a Supersonic transport. That was a plane I would hate to ride in as it had no real room especially if it had passengers . I would think the next transport would be just as small inside the passenger areas . The feeling was one of a self made Coffin ride that I would rather walk than ride anywhere at anytime . I would recommend a tour all day at the Seattle Washington Boing museum they even had jfk president one last aircraft the day he was shot . And you can be go inside and see how it felt to sit down and even see his bathroom next to the hot phones . And I was lucky to be alone and have the full day to photo so many cool aircraft that I would return over and over to see .

Structural thermal limitations are fundamental in this regime, interesting if that was the residual roadblock to even higher sps, wouldn't shockwave me, heat was always explicitly one of the limiting factors. To learn they were expecting mach 8 even possible?! (gauge should always extend beyond capability) is amazing, perhaps in specific very high alt diving condition?

Coast to coast in the continental United States in 1 hour is equivalent to what speed?
@kathrynck
@kathrynck 2 жыл бұрын
@@rdelrosso2001 It couldn't go mach 10. The J-58 engines were capable of producing thrust through about mach 3.8, but the drop off in positive thrust performance got pretty bad by 3.8. So it wouldn't propel the plane that fast with drag competing against it. It normally cruised at around mach 3.3, but it could go up to mach 3.6 (in level flight) as an absolute maximum. I know of one specific example of a pilot saying he throttled up to mach 3.56 in response to being fired upon while flying over the USSR. SR-71 is typically credited with mach 3+ and 80,000+ ft altitude. It's real typical operational parameters were about 10% above these figures, and it's maximum potential was about 20% above on both numbers. The airframe was mostly titanium, and had direct fuel-to-skin contact to use the fuel as a coolant for the body panels. The materials could probably handle up to about mach 4 max (if you intend to re-use the aircraft many times anyway). A hypersonic missile can go far faster, mostly because it doesn't fundamentally have to survive the process. "One time use" makes a huge difference. In order to go over mach 4 (with something you want to fly hundreds of times) you're going to need something much more clever than just swapping out aluminum for titanium, and gently baking the fuel to dissipate heat. The SR-71 had siblings in the stealthy Archangel 12 design family though. Most people know about the YF-12, but there were several others. The YF-12 was slightly faster than the SR-71. It was also a bit lighter & shorter. There was a model called only "the article" which was produced alongside the SR-71. The armed version fired a missile which was a predecessor to the AIM-54 Phoenix, known as the AIM-47 Falcon missile, which was tipped with a nuclear warhead. The top speed of the AIM-47 (and AIM-54) was rated to around mach 5 (which probably means around mach 5.5 or so). Although, when fired from 90,000 ft or so (from a platform already going mach 3.4 or so) the missile probably reached a noticeably higher max speed. I wouldn't be surprised if it got over mach 6 from that kind of firing position. Anyway, the missile would ideally travel substantially far ahead of the archangel plane before detonating (cuz it's nuclear tipped). So just based on that you can know that the archangel plane couldn't be traveling more than about mach 4 tops, or it would do too good a job of catching up with it's own missile, and getting caught in the blast radius of it's own nuclear warheads. In a sense, the SR-71 is a "recon knock-off" of a plane which was originally designed to be an air-to-air fighter for use in a nuclear shooting war. Thus the performance extremes, and emphasis on early stealth technology. I don't know about the air speed gauge. It may have gone up to 10. I didn't really look at it when I have seen the cockpit. If it did though, I'm certain it's just because they had a bunch of gauge dials which were numbered 1-10, and it was just handy to use. Or possibly it was a ploy to obfuscate the maximum speed from being easily determined by prying eyes with only a glance at the air speed gauge.

The most Russia or China could do is copy the sheet metal not the guts that make it work. When the Russians copied the Concord by looking at pictures of it they didn't know about the highspeed fuel pumps that move the fuel back to the rear of the plane so it doesn't slosh forward during deceleration and cause the plane to crash. The Russian version did crash at the Paris Airshow in 1972.

The definition of "hypersonic" is travelling five times the speed of sound. The supposed speed of the Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" USAF Surveillance Reconnaissance Aircraft of Mach 3 falls well short of the mark. I heard that the SR-71's last flight from Beale AFB outside Los Angeles to the AFB outside Washington DC, where it landed prior to its home at the Smithsonian flight museum was just under one hour to cover coast-to- coast, a distance of round 3,300 miles. Do the maths: it travelled over 3,300 mph, or in excess of 3,000 kts.

Lasers outclass any hypersonic missile going Mach 20 or 50. It doesn't matter. The science will have to be countermeasures to lasers. Get that figured out and you don't need to go Mach anything. A B-52, F/A-18 or A-10 could target whatever needs to be destroyed if it has the countermeasures for missiles AND lasers.

No technology is ever retired by the United States military unless they has a better more effective replacement. Unlike spy planes, Satellites are predictable and can be defeated. The SR-71 was retired in 1990, which is over three decades ago. If the sr-72 is powered by scramjet engines, and if there are materials that can withstand those massive forces, then no missile on Earth can bring it down. Maybe lasers fitted with Adaptive Optics can be effective enough to bring it down, but you have to know the flight plan, especially if stealth was used in its' construction.

Miguel, if no missile on earth could bring it down, maybe a missile from orbit could? Or more likely a laser in orbit. Light travels faster than any hypersonic aircraft. If it can be tracked, it can be shot down. If it was me designing such a tracking system, I would look at either the heat track or contrails for tracking, not radar. The contrails wouldn't necessarily be visible, but ionized particles left behind by such a fast aircraft.

This configuration of the engines can performs effortlessly which relatively a speed of a commercial jet or Hypersonic speed that leave the fighter jet for dust.

@@StormyWolf66 I don't think you understand how low $60m is to build a plane from scratch. A brand new F-16, which is a 'budget' small fighter aircraft, and there's been 3000 of them made, so the factory is already in place and fully paid for, and no development expenses, no engineering, no research, JUST building it... is around 60-65 million. And most aircraft with any technological complexity at all cost 3-digit billions to develop into a functioning full size prototype aircraft. You're not going to make up the difference with a coupon on materials. Also, ANY hypersonic aircraft is going to have exotic materials, ie: expensive materials. $60 million is about 1/10 of 1% of what it would cost to go from a drawing to a flight test of a vehicle...IF you kept the program Extremely cheap.
