we bossed Ramos, Iniesta, Torres, Pique, Villa, etc. like nothing. The announcer John Harkes shows his "US Soccer doubt" ( sometimes confused w/Eurosnob ) that we all show at times, when he says "Luck" two times on Altidore's goal. No luck about it. People need to believe in US Soccer. We can be a global power in football.

Very true, the bias is definitely there and has always been there. However, this is a country of 300 million and a country that produces superstars on the regular in all sports that they hold dear. It's a very athletic nation, and with the dramatic rise of popularity in soccer, it is inevitable that the USA will be elite one day. I feel like it just needs one superstar to make the push for the future generations. Just one. Doesn't need to be a Messi or Ronaldo, but a Fabregas would do.

***** First of all, the confederations cup is a legitimate international and inter-continental tournament. It's second to the World Cup. The USA didn't boss Spain, but they did beat Spain far more than Ghana beat the USA. Ghana aren't a bad team. Never have been. But if you ever paid any attention Ghana beat the USA twice by 1 goal after a vicious back and forth battle. They "slid by" is a more appropriate term. And why don't you take this as a compliment. Yes, Americans were exceptionally happy to beat the best team of all time. Isn't that a compliment to you? If the opponent is really excited about beating your team? And the USA will one day be one of the best, it's inevitable. Maybe it's in 30 years, maybe it's in 15. We will see. In the American player pool there's far more promise than ever before, but still we're not quite there yet.

This is arguably our best USMNT team ever. Prime Donovan, prime Dempsey, young Bradley and Altidore before they got lazy, Gooch, Holden and Davies before injuries ruined them shortly before the WC. This comment is still true today. The 2009 USMNT is perhaps the best ever. In 2010, with Davies, it would have been a whole other story. ***** Ehh, I dunno about Mexico being thought of as a joke, they just have bad luck in the knockout round of the World Cup, the rest of the world generally respects them. USA's problem is that there wasn't much resources for football (soccer, whatever) there until the '90s and still carry the stereotype that the team is just a bunch of part timers who weren't good enough for the NFL. That's not the way I see it, I'm just sayin'.

***** China has 2 billion people. What's your point? To create great players, countries have to first have the soccer culture. Kids have to want to play soccer constantly. Second, the coaching at youth levels needs to be very, very high. Third, the resources need to be there. The size also can act detrimental if you cannot find the best talents. This is what say, Portugal has, and the USA didn't. Up until 1994, the USA had no league and were playing with college kids with no legitimate training. It's been a building process ever since. As of the last 5 years, American kids are pretty invested in the sport. MLS teams have created systems to scout the 300 million people and try to locate these "gems" and train them in academies. This is how Europe does it, but MLS has a far larger margin to work with, which will now work in the Americans favor. Similarly, with the rise in popularity and coaching, more Americans than ever before have been yanked to elite academies. As of this year, it is purported that 70 million Americans now enjoy soccer, which skyrocketed as of even 5 years ago (when nobody cared). If a college kid by the name of Clint Dempsey managed to be that successful, imagine what kids who are actually trained appropriately will be able to do in the coming years.

***** Oh man, I'm convinced now you're trolling. So I'll make this quick: This is a very rapid rise in popularity, far faster than any sort of immigration pattern. I'm not one to point out horrific arguments but that was one. Every nation plays with dual nationals buddy. If the dual nationals couldn't play for countries, then they're pretty much ousted from anything. The US operates as a team. Hence the term "the sum is greater than the individuals" which was coined for the 2014 World Cup in regards to the USA. I'm not speaking with you about politics. "Promotes cooperation"... cute. But your involvement with politics in a soccer conversation is precisely what exposed you as biased troll.

***** Haha man you are such a hater. I'm not even going to respond to you. You need to go and educate yourself about the world because your die hard hatred for the USA is very unhealthy. ***** It is the acronym invented by the English for the full name of the sport called Association Football. The English invented this sport, and thus progressed to nickname it soccer. It was the appropriate term to be called for awhile, and they introduced much of the world to it as soccer, including the USA. Only later did they change it to football which is now what most of the world calls it. Yet both are completely accurate terms and if we're being technical, soccer came first.

If it follows the route of US population trends, which will be 30% hispanic by 2050, then I would expect a lot of latinized last names to be starting on US rosters. More kids are growing up in homes of immigrant parents raised in soccer crazed countries. If 30% of our population are born soccer maniacs, you better believe that the media will pound coverage of soccer in the coming years, which will in turn boost US soccer enthusiasm beyond Latinos and preexisting soccer fans.

We have a few dual nationals out there that, depending on their choice of preference for the team and development, could boost the USA to new heights in the next 4 years. This was something that was unimaginable 4 years ago. Hopefully they choose the USA but we will see. There's a growing trend of players being dual nationals world wide and having to make a tough decision. The USA's bases in other countries and the immigration rates to the USA definitely help.

Thomas Price There's already some hispanics in the youth system but there's others too. Such as Aron Johannsson, Icelandic heritage, Fabian Johnson - German etc. We have Villareal who is hispanic, Diego Fagundez who is South American, and a few others. But there's a ton of everything else as well. The popularity of the sport is actually exceptionally high right now, much higher than anticipated. I have the stats, it's the 2nd most popular sport between the ages of 12-24.

casey tyler Technically, almost nobody ever has a Messi or Ronaldo. I don't see one of those in our near future, but there might be an elite player coming up soon. We have a few that have that much potential. We will see. When looking at soccer's progression in the last 3 years, I can tell you some facts: 1) It's the 2nd most popular sport in the USA between the ages of 12-24 2) Lionel Messi became the first soccer player to be in the top 10 most popular athletes in the USA. Between 12-24, he's in 3rd place. And then Ronaldo joins the top 10 at 7th. This is the same list that includes Jordan as #1, meaning as far as active athletes go, Messi's the 2nd most popular among the youth. 3) NBC purchased the rights to all EPL games because there was demand for it. 4) The MLS outsells the NBA ticket wise. 5) FIFA is the #1 sports game in the USA ever since FIFA 10 So in the past 3 years, the USA has seen an absolutely dramatic rise in popularity for the sport. Although the older people don't commit, the younger seem to really enjoy the sport. So you're right, it's only a matter of time when that gem in the dust emerges from the USA. And more than likely, there will be multiple.

Face it, guys. No matter how many times we beat big teams like Spain, we will never get respect. We could win 5 World Cups in a row and not get any respect. Simply because we're americans.
@shnickel1
@shnickel1 10 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't go that far. We won't get the respect until we once again cause massive damage at a World Cup. I say once again referring to 2002. I hear from many Europeans would give us credit if we advanced passed this specific group. However, there will still be plenty of haters. The USA winning one World Cup would ruin that though. However that likely won't happen soon. But advancing out of this group and making a strong run would gain the USA respect.

***** I was being hypothetical when I said the "5 world cups" thing. But even if it happened, nobody will respect us. I don't understand why we get so much hate. I mean come on. ***** You are being rude. Perhaps the USA won't win the WC in 2014, but there's always a chance. Here's some facts for you: The USA ruined Spain's winning streak by beating them 2-0 in the Confederations Cup, this USA team is stronger than that team, no European team has ever won the World Cup in the Americas, survivors of the groups of death almost always go very far in the World Cup, and Jose Mourinho tipped the USA to causing some upsets.

Those few years seemed to be a good cycle for the US. Solid defensively but a little pedestrian when on the front foot. IMHO the current generation seems faster and more creative, however not sold on their defending. Think we need to develop a couple of beasts for CBs to help cover as our current GK is not as talented as what we had then.

It's simple, the generation was too old and Spain's way of play was found out and broken. It was simple. Park the bus and just hope for a counter attack. That's how Spain's Tiki-Taka tactic was broken. It was too predictable. USA had found the formula first and it took a while for people to find out. It took 3 years for Chelsea to break this tactic again but this time vs Barca. To add to that, many of the Spain generation got old and weren't in their prime anymore. Xavi got old, Casillas wasn't in his prime anymore. Pique was missing Puyol too much, and Ramos didn't get enough help from Pique. Busquets seemed very lost with a depleted Xavi and an Iniesta who couldn't connect well with Xavi. The striker(Diego Costa) didn't fit the system well and well the wingers weren't really originally wingers. Spain just wasn't go through many good things that summer.

CreArq Edgar You're not only an idiot but you can't form a proper sentence, Mexico wasn't a wasteland filled with nothing, no the natives still live in Mexico always have and always will, if the country still has some or a majority of what was there before the spanish then no they don't have a mother country, Its people like you that think mexico never had any native americans, and that the spanish were the only people there. If there was something there before the spanish and it still thrives today than that means what was known as Mexico (even though it wasn't really mexico) was already independent meaning that spain is not a mother country. Also you're so fucking wrong about the england killing the natives part. Are you fucking dumb? England wanted to prevent the colonists from moving further into the indian territory. Also you do realize the genocide of the natives started after the english were kicked out? smh

Though you do bring up a valid point about his disappearance in big games in the past, I'd like to point to the fact that his finishing has dramatically improved.
