Awesome flight and I like how the audio chatter and music came together. Really atmospheric. I can’t wait until Asobo bring the aurora borealis into the sim. Flights up high over the arctic circle should look incredible. I did my first flight in the Dark Star in VR last night. Really recommend it. Gives you a little glimpse into how terrifying it would be to be a real world hypersonic test pilot.

Mach 9 lol I'm scared just thinking about it. One little hiccup you could miss a run way by states lol not miles. Going to be fun tho outside the challenge. I especially like the roll manuaver and pitch down to pick up speed before pitching up to light the scram jets. Need more documentation on it. I'm going to run the challenge alot and dissect it. Let's say you want to cross the Atlantic at what point do you start descent and pitch down to maintain g's and not over shoot. The challenge guides you very well. But I could see this being more fun on world.

The terrifying thing about hypersonic flight is that slight changes in pitch can result in drastic changes in altitude in such a short space of time. I hadn't thought about that before watching this. Your channel has made me want to get my VR headset out, buy a HOTAS, and start learning to fly on flight simulator. Great video, thanks for sharing!
@IntotheBlueSimulations

Indeed WL; at those sorts of speeds, I would imagine it doesn’t take much to upset the aircraft in either a minor, or a catastrophic way! I was watching something just today in fact and they were saying that one of the reasons the US halted development of hypersonic missiles, was the erratic flight path. I’m sure development will start up again though, now that everyone has seen the Russians have them. I’m really glad the channel has inspired you enough to think about getting into flight sim, that’s really one of my main goals : ) My pleasure! Thanks very much for watching and all the best!

I like that they even included the atmosphere around the aircraft turning into plasma. When you fly at hypersonic speeds its gonna be like flying face first into the flames of a blowtorch because the friction from air resistance at those speeds generates an insane amount of heat. Its pretty much why you see spacecraft and meteors glowing with "fire" around them as they enter Earth's atmosphere.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it was definitely a nice little touch from Asobo! In fact, overall they did a really nice job with the Darkstar, adding enough detail into the aircraft to make it fun and interesting to operate, as well as providing a nice challenge. You really do have to be made of “the right stuff”, to sit in a small metal capsule, whilst it slowly burns up through the Earth’s atmosphere haha! : O Cheers and all the best : )

I can't tell you how delighted I am to have lived thru the propeller era to the jet era to the Rocket to the Moon era, and now the Hypersonic era. I saw the SR-71 on the flight deck of the SS INTREPID , and still wonder why they didn't develop a Hyperspace aircraft for commercial flights. I realize that it's unlikely but I would love to go NEW YORK TO SAN FRANCISCO in half an hour. TWO thumbs up, guys. FYI, back in the early 1980's, shortly after leaving the Air Force, a friend of mine who worked for NASA let me play with their Moon landing simulator. It made you feel as though you were flying and landing Neil Armstrong's Lunar Lander. I imagine that would be an even wilder experience now, considering the massive improvements in computing power, not to mention the byproduct known as CGI. What was a thrill-ride back then would likely leave you breathless nowadays. If you remember what the picture on a tube TV looked like then compared with 4 or even 8K TV NOW, we've come a VERY LONG WAY since then. For one thing, I am driving a Subaru Forester which can maintain speed and stay in a lane on any highway RIGHT NOW, with the touch of a button on the steering wheel. That's right. Look, Ma, NO HANDS is a reality. I may be in my 70's, but you just have got to love technology. BTW, my license plate reads DRBHAPPY. Really! And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

@@IntotheBlueSimulations So, I went and got this plane. What a thrill. My first flight was a very simple bit of pattern work...at 300mph around Beale AFB in California, just to get a handle of the things handling. Then a short hop to Edwards AFB from Beale...and that first flight went all pear shaped. LOL. COuld not get the thing to maintain Mach 1. I realized I was flying at too high a pitch. Figured no more than 10 degrees when hauling tail. Today, I successfully got to Mach 9, and BLEW right past Edwards during the slow down, and I just ended flying on the conventional engines the 80 or so miles back to edwards where I landed. The sythetic vision camera must be "mounted" somewhere below the AC's center line as it distorts one's picture when banking. Overall though...fun, just fun. HOw realistic? If it is based on a simulation of the SR-71, I would say this could be viable, but who knows.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Haha, that all sounds about right and I’m pretty sure summarises most peoples first adventures with the DarkStar (it’s always a touch embarrassing, having to limp back home on the on the conventional engines, tail between your legs - I’ve never done that of course XD ). I’m really glad you had an enjoyable experience with the aircraft though. As you say, it’s just pure good fun! The perfect example of what a “fantasy” aircraft should be like in MSFS (the Pelican was a bit of a stretch for me). There’s certainly enough there to have you thinking about the flight profile and one can’t just “brute force” it. As I understand it, in terms of materials science Mach 9 is a bit farfetched, but otherwise, I think the aircraft is a reasonably viable recreation of what an SR72 might look like. Thanks for sharing! All the best : )

So this is MFS. Which does rely on some actual physics for aircraft. Does that mean that Darkstar could actually fly? Now I'm curious how its radar signature would look.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Aerodynamically, I think it's feasible QTFS. I believe the Darkstar's design is based on the real-world SR-72 concept. I think the only major issue with the Darkstar vs reality (or one of the issues at any rate), is the aircraft's supposed top speed. I gather in reality, we don't really have any suitable materials for sustained flight at Mach 10 (I seem to recall that the "real" SR-72 is slated to go around Mach 6). As to the aircraft's radar signature - I have no clue on that one I'm afraid haha. Cheers and all the best! : )

Theirs two reset switches. I played with this quite a bit when you do your roll to inverted and pitch down keep pitching down to around Mach 1.6 if you have altitude. Then roll and pitch up 10 degrees. Stabilize and start scram jets. ASAP. This is gonna be a fun Jet. I was a big fan of the SR-71. In world we could have some fun seeing how far and fast it could go. The disadvantage is things happen fast and it's going to need long runways lol ATC is probably not an option lol.

It's pretty basic but it does what it does well. I've been climbing to 32k, then I do a shallow dive at around -10 degrees until I hit about 550 IAS. Then I pitch up slowly to maintain my IAS which will be just over 600 at that point. You can pitch to maintain IAS until you hit mach 3+ then enable the scrams and fuel cell. The faster you get going before your climb to mach 3, the better the engines work and the easier it actually is to maintain speed. That's why I try to aim for just over 600 IAS. At that speed you have enough power and you won't lose any speed at all in your climb. At that point you can't do too much wrong. I cruise about mach 8 to save a bit of fuel
@happydappyman

At Mach 8 I got from Guam to Sydney. Still haven't quite figured out how best to fly an approach what with not being able to see. I find it's easiest if you come in for a pretty shallow approach. About 20 to 25% on the throttle.

I am quite impreseed by Vne speed of this. There should be some maximum IAS limit which I can not see. The limit should be given by aircraft surface temperature strenght limit. Also very interesting is that fuel from front tank is not pumped into rear tank to balance the aircraft weight. Because once over the speed of sound, every aircraft becomes very nose heavy. So transfer fuel to rear tank to balance weight. Also I guess like in Concorde the fin wing tanks should be depleted first because the fuel might be overheated.

Hi Jaromír, Haha, well whilst I think Asobo put a surprising amount of effort into the Darkstar, I guess those sorts of considerations were beyond the level of fidelity they were looking to bring. I presume the maximum speed of the aircraft was dictated more by the Top Gun movie, than any real-world materials limitations etc. I've had a few other viewers state that CofG does actually affect aircraft performance, though I haven't seen any evidence of that myself. . . Indeed. I gather the real-world SR-72 is expected to reach speeds of around Mach 6 - but I guess that wouldn't have been exciting enough for the movie (and of course Tom Cruise has to be able to sit in it haha). Cheers : )

Hi Magzire, Well the tutorial suggests that it’s done, although it’s certainly not necessary. The logic behind it is based on real-wold limitations; by rolling over and pulling through the dive, the pilot (and the airframe) are subjected to positive g’s as opposed to negative g’s - positive g’s are easier for a human to handle. The same is done in the real world during space launches, with the spacecraft rolling over on its “back” as it makes its “turn”. I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best! : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations not sure that the launch profile example is a good analogy; rockets have taken off heads down, heads to the side, and heads up, with no major changes to g-environment. In most ideal situations an orbital rocket (even the shuttle with its wings) tries to generate as little lift as possible, relying only on thrust to accelerate and climb. It's also not immediately evident that the nose down would subject the pilots to major g's. If I'm not wrong the Darkstar climb profile is something called a Rutowski climb, it basically puts the aircraft in a zero-energy-gain condition to accelerate through the transonic barrier. The g's during such a pitchover, at least according to fighter pilots who performed this, puts them light in the seat but not hanging from the straps, so it may be alright to just pitch over. To add on to this i went back and took a look during the roll, your g meter read either 0 or -1 g during the inverted portion, which confirms my suspicion that a pitchover would have been sufficient

When it asks me to reduce the turbines to 80%, what do I do. What switches am I looking for?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eddie, You aren't looking for any switches specifically, rather its a reference to setting 80% of max engine power (on the conventional engines, not the scramjets). If memory serves me correctly, the % shown on the engine display refers to the max RPM of the engines, as opposed to the percentage of thrust itself. So you might have to "eyeball" the thrust setting slightly, but basically bring your throttle up to around 80%. I hope that helps? All the best! : )

So is the SR 71 similar to the darkstar?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Fuzz, Well I suppose they are somewhat similar in that they are both high-speed, high-altitude aircraft, but they are rather different in terms of design and performance (the Darkstar is of course fictional as well). I believe the Darkstar is somewhat based around the design of the SR-72, which is still in development as far as I am aware. I gather the SR-72 is expected to achieve around Mach 6, whereas the Darkstar can of course reach around Mach 9. I think the SR-72 is also going to be unmanned. That's all just info I've gathered of various other comments though, it's not a subject I know all that much about haha. I hope that helps! All the best : )

Hi Syed, I'm very sorry you've been having issues with the aircraft. A few others have also been unable to get the Darkstar airborne, but unfortunately we haven't been able to pin down a cause yet (it does seem as though there may be a bug). The only suggestion I can really make is; make sure your sim's flight model is set to "Modern" and not "Legacy". Park brake off as well, some people missed that one hehe. Other than that, I'm afraid I'm not sure what the issue could be though. . . I hope you manage to get things sorted! All the best : )

Ah nice! Well, me too haha. As much as I’ve tried to get excited about SpaceX and NASA returning to the moon etc, it just doesn’t do much for me. I find the coverage pretty awful and none of the characters involved are anywhere near as cool as Lovell, Kranz, Grissom et al. Hi Gunell, Are you correctly engaging the scram jets? That seems like the most likely culprit (if they aren’t running, you won’t be able to build speed). Otherwise, are you broadly following the profile in terms of entry speed / altitude (the scram jets need to operate within certain parameters, in order for them to work properly). It’s a little bit tricky to know exactly what the issue might be, without knowing more of the details. I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )
