This is Dan Ackroyd’s version of why he was there: Dan gave an interview to NH Magazine and this is what he said about how it happened: “Totally by accident. My father and I were interviewing business managers in LA and we walked into this office of a talent manager, and realized we were in the wrong place. I was looking for a money manager, not a talent manager. I had managed myself at that time and always have. But he said, so long as you are here, would you like to come and join this "We are the World" thing. I thought how do I fit in here? I was 18 and working in a record store in West L.A. when this came out, and it was astonishing how many people bought multiple copies just to contribute more to the cause. And from what we could tell, it wasn't even about the song in many cases. It was literally on the radio every two seconds and you couldn't avoid seeing the video if you tried because there were only a few outlets that aired music videos at the time, so hearing the song for free was no problem. Contributing directly to a cause wasn't so easy back then, so many people just paid $1.69 per 7" single and gave them away. That was a great time to have that job (and we also had a TicketMaster in the store, so we saw EVERYBODY in concert 😁).
