Phil Collins suffered a spinal injury in 2007 that damaged the vertebrae in his upper neck and caused nerve damage. The injury was caused by years of playing drums in poor posture, which crushed his spinal cord. The injury has impacted Collins' ability to perform. He was forced to use a wheelchair at the final Genesis show in March 2022. Collins has said that he can barely hold a drumstick and that he will no longer be able to play drums. However, he will still tour with Genesis and perform vocals. His son Nic, who plays drums for the band Better Strangers, has replaced him on the drum. Phil will always be my favorite drummer.

He is a singer, songwriter, producer, plays drums, piano and has been known to pick up a guitar on a song or two. During the 1985 Live Aid Concert in the U.S. & UK, he was the only singer to perform at Wembley Stadium in the Uk, then fly on the Concord a few hours to New York and catch a helicopter to Philadelpha to perform at the JFK Stadium, basically performing at the same Live Aid Concert on both sides of the Atlantic a few hours apart.

Kathy here - Phil Collins was an expert on the drums, and when the lead singer for Genisus left, Phil stepped up and said he would sing. Hence, he became the lead singer of that band, before going out on his own. Unfortunately, his shoulders have taken a beating over the years and is not able to play drums anymore. His son took over for him a while, but from what I recently saw on another post, (don't hate on me if it is incorrect, lol) Phil's health is failing and he is no longer performing. But yes, this live version is one of the best our there. He was a drummer before he became a singer. And then became a drummer who can sang, as we say in the South! Have a great day gentleman!

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in the Bercy neighborhood of Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder and, in what many people don't know, the arranger for this live version of the song)), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), the incomparable Leland Sklar on Bass Guitar, Chester Thompson (Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" (now called "Accor Arena-Bercy") and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son Nicholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is in his 70's now. His son was on the Domino tour with Genesis last year and it seems to have been Phil's swan song. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).
