As an old American rugger I don't believe that she was told to pass 'politely'. I've ever heard anyone say that. She might have heard it as being polite or he explained it poorly. What I was taught and taught others was to throw 'sympathetic passes'. Throw the pass that you would want to catch. Be aware of where the ball is going and when it will get there. Would you want to catch a ball in a place and time that has you standing still and reaching up while a defender is 2 yards away and coming fast? With that you also had responsibility for the ball not only when you passed it but until the person that catches it passes it.
