Here in California, USA, we love In-N-Out because it's so affordable. For almost 20 years they kept the price of their burgers below $1.50, and even now the pricing for everything is about half of other chains. Fresh, friendly, and a local favorite.

Biggest problem I have with our Aussie specialty burger chains is just the value proposition. Like - the burgers are good, but the cost of entry is just insane in some places and cant be justified for a 'fast food lunch' type of meal.

@yashbhatt75 no just that the burger itself cost more than a meal at a general place like kfc or mcdonalds lol. For example a bettys double is 17.50 here. A large popcorn chicken meal at kfc on the other hand is about $14 hope that explains it

Betty's burgers is definitely in the top 5 chains here in Oz. The other two are not even close. Burger Project was the best chain until Neil Perry decided to cut his losses early during covid. Not exactly a surprise considering the raw ingredients he was using (cape grim beef etc) Securing the high turnover he needed at those prices was always a big ask.

Hahah this is awesome. :) Love the dedication! I got to say though, something like this is probably subject to a fair amount of palate bais. One thing I noticed in the US is that everything tastes a bit different and that taste could arguably seem 'nicer' to somebody who lives there. The pervasion of 'sweetness' is a good example. Everything is sweet. . .it's hard to actually find bread without a bunch of added sugar - which to us in Oz sounds crazy. Even their Dry red wines still exhibit a great deal more sweetness than we expect from ours here at home. Perhaps an American would score our burgers lower because the taste profile isn't what they are used to and its been designed for Australia's desire for more savoury flavours. . . 🤷‍♂

Killer content, I am such a burger nerd and love seeing stuff like the burger culture in Aus. Burger Urge looked awesome, but the tomato did make me audibly laugh. Assessment of In-N-Out is pretty spot on, I personally can't get around the price of Shake Shack, it really deters me from eating there but it is good. The midwest US has a solid offering with a spot called Culvers, and the south is all Whataburger. Thank you for the video!

Betty’s is definitely up there, really enjoyed the texture of the patty. I had In n out at a few locations in the states, the one in Vegas was ok but it was a really busy restaurant so felt abit like a conveyer belt system, was as much care taken with everything. Tried it again in San Diego, this store was near a military base and heavily frequented by military members and there seemed to be abit more care and attention. One of the fave places in Sydney is Chubby Buns which is a food truck but has fixed locations, but different style burger as they’re thicker patties grilled over charcoal but I’m a big fan

As an Aussie, I've never seen or heard of Betty's Burgers. Looking at their website, I guess they do fit the definiton of 'chain', but pretty small. I've had the other two, and you're right, they're not bad, but as I'm sure is the same everywhere, they don't even compare to my non-chain favourite burger place (Just Poppy's, Riverhills, Brisbane). Honestly my fav burger out of both countries franchises is 5 Guys. The best I had in Sydney and New York. I don't get the fries just 2 x Double Cheese Burgers with grilled onions, mushrooms, lettuce, mayo, mustard and pickles. Very expensive (in Oz) but worth it imo. Many say In N Out are good for the price but aren't anything special when comparing to 20 dollar plus burgers. Bettys I found the buns too soft and feels like a greasy mess. Each to their own.

I like Five Guys best, too. I probably go about 4 to 5 times a year. (Which is more than I go to any other burger place). I get a single patty, cheese, bacon, pickles, mustard, and sometimes mushrooms or onions, on the lettuce wrap. Usually don't bother with any sides or beverage, especially since it seems they charge for water (which comes from the same dispenser as the soda), and I don't care for soda. But I do love their fries - I just don't always want them because the burger itself is generally filling enough.

You can't compare In-N-Out to things like Shake Shack or any of those Australian chains because they looked like they were on a whole 'nother level. Never been to Australia, so can't vote. However, US fast food burgers are pretty awful: poor quality meat, light weight, limited seasoning and NEVER ever any serious char. Fries are always under cooked using old oil, rarely crispy and never taste fresh. Plus, most times the food is not hot. Yes, the service is usually friendly, but willing to pay a $ or two more for better quality. Andy, thanks for confirming my experience in the US. I'm American and have always found the "nicer" fast food burger joints like In-N-Out and Five Guys' burgers to be under-seasoned. Five Guys doesn't salt their meat at all, so you end up with less-than-seasoned beef and too much unseasoned salad. I'm not saying that's bad; with the cheese it's a tasty combo, but for me it could be better. Maybe they're trying to be a bit healthier?

I'm not sure why, because Americans love fries, but they're kind of an afterthought in most of our fast food restaurants. Also lack of seasoning seems to be a through-line for the American spots, which I can attest to, which is why I always have Cajun seasoning handy when possible.

We loooove our fries in Australia. It comes as a side with _everything_. Furthermore, Australians LOVE strong seasoning. I recently spent 2 months in Japan and noticed that everything was severely under-seasoned, meanwhile a Japanese student came to Australia and she said the seasoning was overwhelming. I wonder if Americans just have a subtler palette like the Japanese. Andy would be used to Australian levels of seasoning which could bring down the American scores.

Yea I'm not a fan of any "fast food" burgers here in the USA. I really think that if you want a good burger here you have to go to a Sports bar, dive bar, diner or casual dining place to find one. Fast food here in the States is all quantity and speed over quality and it shows. By casual dining I mean anything that is in between a fast food place and a restaurant. I'd say Steak N Shake, Red Robin, Portillos, or Five guys would be good examples though Red Robin is more of a chain restaurant like Apple Bee's or Chillis.

In n out fries (not chips) should be ordered "well done" for the crispy version. Just something the locals know about. Also the burger can be customized to your liking. Basic In n Out is just okay. Customized In n Out is amazing!
@McNasty43

Well done in-in-out fries are basically hollow. A good fry has a nice fluffy interior, and if you get them well done, the interior just kind of evaporates. The problem with in-n-out fries is that they're not double fried. Other fast food joints have fries that are par-cooked and frozen.

as a pro tip, when you go to in-n-out you need to ask for your fries "well done" and salt them yourself. Especially if you get them animal style. Well done fries are a must at in-n-out, they'll give you that crunch and consistency you're looking for
@oneblacksun

It's a bit biased, an Aussie comparing Australian burgers to American ones. I also think it's a bit skewed because the burger joints in the US (excluding Shake Shack) are proper FAST food, drive-through joints. You won't find a Betty's or Grill'd in Australia that has that similar level of service aimed at efficiency and speed, so of course I'd definitely expect the quality to also be higher with more time spent. Not to mention, the prices of those Australian burgers weren't discussed 👀. All that being said, as an American in Aus for years now, if you made a fair equivalent comparison -- say US McDonalds to Aus McDonalds -- Australia's beef patty wins.

So as a So Cal born person living in Aus i have two faults. In N Out you want animal style burger and fries. It is loved due to its freshness for the price. With your Bettys order, it has bacon and you didnt get a burger with their burger sauce. I rate them quite highly tbh. But fantastic job on the vid and much love ❤️.

I totally agree regarding the In n Out fries. They use Kennebec potatoes which have that weird mealy texture you disliked, as well as an odd flavor. It's crazy to me that they haven't switched to Russet potatoes, since it's widely agreed upon that their fries need improvement. I disagree with you on the In n Out burger bun though. It's my favorite aspect of their burger (Other than the remarkably low price of it). Everything else about the burger is pretty standard, nothing special.

Come check out A&W in Canada. It's vastly different than it's American counterpart. People who've had both say Canadian A&W is vastly better. There is another Canadian chain called Harvey's. I've never had it as they haven't really expanded into my home province of Saskatchewan. Canada needs more of their own identity when it comes to burger chains. We have the usual McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, and Dairy Queen. There are some smaller chains, but nothing I could recommend outside of A&W. What I've noticed when it comes to the United States, they have a myriad of options for burger chains outside of the big ones. I would say Burger Baron, but each are independently owned and may not always have the same things outside of their burgers. Their burgers are great. It's unfortunate that the one in my hometown closed down. Burger Baron is a Western Canadian chain concentrated to the province Alberta now.

Strawberry milkshake from Betty’s also good as well my daughter loves it! In and Out animal fries and beef burger love it as well and price pretty reasonable. I would also want to add Fergburger from Queenstown NZ, the burger is so juicy and onion rings were so thick! We had a teary eye while eating Fergburger 😅😂

As someone who lives down the street from an In N Out, it is over hyped. But I will say this though, In N Out's burgers tick all the boxes of what a standard basic burger should be, but nothing really to write home about. I would also argue that is the very reason why I sometimes love it.

In N Out people constantly complain when people don’t get the Animal Style option, but honestly if that’s best way to get the food then why not make it a menu standard except of something you have to ASK for. It’s really dumb considering that’s really what the chain is known for.
