As a brazilian, whenever I try to describe to my colleagues the difference between an american fan and a south american/european fan, I use two brazilian words: " Fã" and "Torcedor". A "fã" likes to watch his team, buys jerseys, go to the stadium and make his club rich, but if his club loses a match, they might be a little upset, but their day goes on. It's just another thing they enjoy, just like a good movie or a good video game from their beloved franchises. A "fã" from a club is as much a fan as a Star wars fan which lots of action figures in their cabinet, knowing all catchphrases from the movie, etc... A "torcedor" is almost like a tribesman. if their team loses, it's like their own tribe got ransacked, they won't just become upset, they whole week is ruined. If their team is relegated, they'll cry as if it's a funeral of their own parent. When people say that an european or a south american treats a match like war, they ain't kidding. Our chants aren't mere songs for cheering our team or get some fun, they are war songs in a tribal manner. That's why, at least in Brazil, you NEVER change what club you are a "torcedor". Doing it is literal backstabbing your origins. Your club is as much part of your whole identity as a human being as race or a surname. You don't support your team because it pleases you, most of the time it doesn't, you do out of love, just like you love your own relatives. Here in Brazil, there are many "fãs" of european clubs, telling "meu barça" or "meu real" or "meu city".They enjoy the brand, likes seeing these clubs' high quality football, even have an affinity for the club's overall vibe and culture, and might even harbor a playful rivalry, but They weren't bawling when barça was demolished by Bayern, nor when Real got eliminated by City this year. They ain't going from Rio to Guayaquil in Equator, spending 2x their own monthly salary to travel by plane, just to be there and see his team winning Libertadores. They ain't selling their possessions , pretty much ruining their finances for years, living in debt in a third-world country, because they need to see "Timão" on the other side of the globe in Japan because it's their team's only chance of "winning the whole world", and being even more proud that Corinthians "ganhou o mundo" than when they achieved their own goals in life like their first car, their own house or a great job. They ain't crossing a large city like Salvador by foot, a city larger than most american cities, every weekend because they need to see Bahia play. They ain't a " torcedor", let alone a "torcedor fanático". There might be american "torcedores" somewhere, whom literally understand these tribalistic impulses their club brings towards them. I've yet to talk with one.

Wow a great comment, I learned something new and it was powerful. Indeed there are different kinds of fans in every country I believe. Diehards and just entertainment fans. One suffer more due to a loss than others. One care more about the money, some more about the history. Some countries Show their love and passion for a team than other countries. And i think that is the most beautiful thing about our sport. It's all the same but so different at the same time. Love and greetings my mate!
@gamingtheory6035 Жыл бұрын
I like that at the end of the day we treat it as a game, because that's all it is. It's not life or death. It's not something worth losing your life over. I like that we don't have the extreme fanaticism that's present abroad, riots, or crushings. This isn't politics. It's not worth getting worked up over it. I get the feeling that some people won't be happy unless we acted like Liverpool fans.
@Bronze_Age_Sea_Person Жыл бұрын
@@gamingtheory6035 I mean, you might not need to riot over your team, but at least you ought to have some love, right? Nobody thinks american fans are cool because of this lack of passion ,with culminates with a lack of "inner culture", which means no memorable chants, no big things done by the fans such as great receptions, mobs of tens of thousands crossing the streets of another country while chanting songs, no mosaics, etc... Because no one is really into it, since these need most fans to think in a similar manner. For example, let's say you are a San Francisco Giants fan and the next match is in San Francisco, and it's a really important one. If San Francisco was a Brazilian city, I bet the golden gate would be full to the brim with "torcedores", receiving the team, chanting songs for the team, throwing fireworks, etc... I'd would be a little July 4th just for the Giants, when the Player's bus crossed the bridge. Who cares if people need the bridge to get to work, San Francisco Giants is more important than them, they have to wait. f they are a Giants' fan, it's justified. f they hate the Giants, fuck them haters, get bent and wait! Here in Curitiba, where I live, my team Athletico won a national cup years ago. We received them at the airport, and the entire path from Airport to the stadium all the way to the other side of the city, which is almost as big as Chicago in population, in the middle of a Thursday Afternoon, was pretty much uncrossable. How many millions were lost due to pretty much stopping some of the most important streets in the city to receive a team? Who cares, we won the Copa do Brasil, that's what matters!
@gamingtheory6035 Жыл бұрын
@@Bronze_Age_Sea_Person Wtf... You don't need to riot or create a disturbance in order to display love for your team. It's not a "lack of passion" to act like a civilized human being and keep things in perspective. We do have chants, receptions, mosaics, etc. You just haven't been paying attention. What we don't have is lowbrow football hooligan "culture" and weird, political extremist Ultras and the thuggish acts of violence associated with them. And we want to keep it that way. If you consider that garbage "culture," I don' know what to tell you. We already have enough problems in this country as it is.

But Europe and the rest of the world is on another level, and then the crazy Greek fans were not even included in the video. In my opinion YNWA sounds more powerful at Celtic Park then at Anfield.

Its really interesting to see that in the MLS u can spot some cultural differences between states, like in the east part of america the tifos ar more similar to the european scenario and in the west coast its similar to the latin america torcidas...maybe because of the cultural enviroments that certain "races" are spread troughout the US

but yeah the US still have that family friendly vibe...its suposed for you to stand and defend something not just to sing some song u need to put passion in it
@loganleroy8622 Жыл бұрын
@@afonsofonseca5796 Part of that is how sports are viewed. Professional sports teams in the US can move around to new cities. They are only found in the largest cities. With the exception of Green Bay, Wisconsin (population of 330k), the next smallest city to host 1 professional team is Buffalo, New York at 1.1 million people. So it's about supporting the team not defending your city, because odds are most of the people traveling to the game are not from that city. I have to drive 3 hours to support my MLS, MLB, NBA, or NFL team. If you want teams that can't move then you have to go to College Sports, but the people who go to college are not the working class people that make up the "ultras" of most European fan bases. Sporting events are about having a good time and promoting an exciting environment that is relatively family friendly. We don't need to pretend we're going to war. That's probably because if you want to go to war in the United States you can simply join the military, they've had a military engagement every decade since its creation.

Two factors here. The most popular sport in the US is a sit-down legs-up hot-dog-in-hand boring show that is baseball. On top of that you have nearly ALL fans driving themselves in their individual cars for a watered-down family show, with the exception of a handful of stadiums within the city grid (Boston, MSG). You will never ever have the ultras atmosphere at a Patriots game if the stadium is in the middle of the f*cking nowhere.

Zero atmosphere and zero passion. Its kind of expected when your team is a franchise and can move to another city. This removes any sense of belonging or identity. Timbers fans as a whole are probably the only fans in MLS worthy of being compared to European ultras because their fanbase is the only organic one that also spans multiple generations. I live in Austin and our fans are deservedly considered some of the best in the league. However, despite getting loud and having a good home record, many of the fans in the supporters section haven’t been to enough games to know the songs and chants and many don’t sing at all. Nor have they been a fan long enough to realize the payoffs of winning big matches and trophies. They want to get drunk, see some goals, and party. It’s a fun Saturday plan. MLS fanbases simply need time to catch up to their international counterparts.

American Soccer is a mix of Latin American and European culture. Depending on which clubs you're at in the United States, you'll find some clubs include more chants in Spanish, but don't think that it's only the ones fluent in Spanish that sing. Anyone can learn a song in any language especially if it's to support the team you love.

With all the South American immigrants and increasing popularity it's just a matter of time MLS will stand out in the USA and will come close to moments of Europe's atmosphere. It will never reach the same level, because in Europe it's not only sport but also the pride of your city. In the USA a club can move to another city, such can never happen in the EU.

The problem is American chants are awful. When I went to South Africa for the World Cup, it was same with the South African fans, no humour in the chants. English chants are inventive, sometimes dark and humorous. My fave two chants are by West Ham fans, though i am a Spurs fan. The Di Canio and Van Persie chants.

America stepped up their game. But I am still missing a real edge, that defined aggresion you feel smashing you in the head when a European side opens up chanting. Just shouting ''FIGHT AND WIN'''in a microphone is not really the way to go. Not to mention the chants with ''we salute you'' are quite cringe. Its a real U.S thing so I will expect and see them taking that way of chanting as their own way of football culture. Patriotism is a American thing but it does not really.. set your side appart as a city surrounded by utter darkness and your club being the social light in the mists. All the other side in the U.S is needing to sing is '' You damn fools, its the same country as us '' and you are gone. Make chants of drinking all the wine like San Lorenzo in a U.S sense, or Death Chants like you get in Greece or the Balkans or go deeply into the city you live in. Chant about its history, no allegiance to the stars and stripes. Nationality should not matter. Only the club. Once the U.S do that. I'll say they found the stairway to heaven. But sofar. C+ for putting in and the effort. But they are not there yet.
@FootballPassion999 Жыл бұрын
Very interesting and good comment. You have said things correctly. The passion from european Fans comes from the love to their club and the history of their city. You can feel the energy once a chant starts and every sord is screamed out louder than the last one. US fans did their research and improved. A lot to be fair. But the real "problem" for now is that their clubs mostly don't have a big history. So therefor the passion comes from imitating other fanbases like european fans for example. They are improving but they are not there yet. It will be interesting to see where MLS fans will be in 10 or maybe 20 years. Thanks for you comment!

Bless them, they're trying , but MLS fans are still really lightweight. There's no conviction or passion in their singing. Still just seems like American fans imitating European ones. I think it may be the culture as football, and sports in general, are just something to be consumed in US culture but it's part of someone's identity in Europe and other places around the world.

Its getting better now in mls, thats true. But you destroy it with marching bands or cheerleaders. Don't do that. And also let the supporters organise the singing, not the speaker or music from the stadion. That's realy bad! And its true, football is passion, emotion, and sometimes war.

Atmospheres at MLS matches are solid; I’ve been going to FC Cincy games from the start and it’s heading in the right direction. Would prefer a MLS match over an EPL atmosphere any day, but you are pulling from Germany, Italy, Turkey, and Serbia where they have perfected it lol. You left out the Tifo signage from the MLS as well which is pretty comparable. Obviously though, the Europeans are better but MLS isn’t bad by any stretch.
