Just my opinion of course, but as a European I think anything that's across a sea, the US could hold. They would completely dominate the seas in this war. So no liberation of Ireland. This would be a minor victory for the USA, but both sides would take heavy losses. There is more for the USA to gain than the EU has to gain in this hypothetical matchup. I'd have gone for Europe's "loose ends" first, such as the islands, and any land masses that would be easy to cut off. As well as setup a Naval Blockade to cut off a large chunk of Europe's trade and oil, and allow them to be weakened before moving in.

They don't like the EU and there is some evidence that Putin might be interested in forming diplomatic ties with the US since their relationship with China isn't all that good, so they might see it as a way to take down a rival and possibly gain a new ally. Or they just sit it out so that if the war goes bad they don't take any heat for it. Or you're right.

The west and east of the usa has mountains and borders the 2 biggest oceans in the world. USA also has the most armed civilians so the militia will have a effect since USA has a lot of patriots and even some nationalists (not that nationalists are good) and you can literally get a AR-15 in the us. Another thing is the usa has the strongest navy in the world making a invasion even more difficult and the USA spends over 900 billion dollars on it's defense budget annually, america literally has the best army in the world and is in one of the best locations ever to hold off an invasion.
