One of the first things I did while serving in the USFK was trade MREs with the ROK Marines. Their chow was insanely good and way different from what I'd had in China. Korea is a fundamentally different and important partner compared to China, and their food is absolutely delicious. It's definitely worth trying. As you can see in this video, they have these awesome pouches to heat up their meals, which makes having hot chow in the cold and dry Korean winters just perfect. Semper Fi!

I had a teacher in high school who served during the Korean war, and he was at chosin. We never got him to talk much about it. We got one story about having to bring up heavier machine guns, because the enemy snipers would hid behind the bodies, and the .30 calibre machine gun rounds just didn't have the penetration. .50BMG did. What he would say was the cold was more lethal than the enemy. He said "you can fight an enemy soldier, he is a man just like you. You cannot fight the weather, it will win every time." RIP you salty old dog, you made history class interesting.

I'm a reserve soldier who spent his active life in Korea. It's been a while since I saw this new combat food pack. LOL... Many Korean active-duty soldiers mix kimchi, meatloaf, and congami with rice, which is actually no different from video reviews. Meatloaf is also popular with Korean active-duty soldiers, and I didn't know Americans would like it, too... I'm glad you enjoyed it. Choco balls actually taste really similar to M&M, so I wonder if the Pentagon has partnered with M&M companies... I hope my translater is work. Sorry for my bad english skill. have nice day 😊

One Korean male served in the Air Force. So I ate Korean MRE several times. Maybe that's why this video was so nice when it came out in my algorithm. What surprised me when I saw this video was that as soon as you saw the chocolate, you thought of melting it and sprinkling it on the cake. This is a common eating method among Korean soldiers. I know you put all the packages out there because this video has to show you each package for review. However, the best way to treat food is to leave pound cakes, chocolate, and paper bowls outside, leave the rest in the heating pack, pull the rope in the package, and seal it with only a small hole where steam comes out in the package. That's why the packaging bag has a zipper. Next, put all the food in a paper bowl, eat the food, and then eat the pound keak and chocolate separately. However, because pound cakes are too dry, most of them melt chocolate and sprinkle it on the cake.

You have to mix sausage, stir-fried kimchi, and fried rice all together to eat. Eating them separately is a matter of preference and a respectful way, but the best eating tip for that South Korean MRE is to mix all three well and eat them together. Also, Koreans eat rice and ban-chan(side dishes) together. (Actually, ban-chan and side dish are honestly a bit different concepts.) Rather than eating each food separately, they eat rice and ban-chan together. That is why the rice you ate felt bland. The seasoning was in the kimchi and sausage to eat with the bland rice.

6:45 on a heating element packaging it says in red text, 'do not turn upside down or lay it down sideways, it will reduce the heating performance' and you flipped it. haha.

you shouldve put the sausages in the heat pack too! they warm it up and pour it over the rice in the little paper container that comes with, and make a - over rice type of food.

I buy freshmade kimchi by the half gallon and sometimes gallon from my local Korean food store. I love kimchi cold and by itself or with hot foods. I don't usually heat up my kimchi. Your reaction after the spice hit cracked me up. 😂

I remember when I served my conscription back in 2011 to 13, I was stoked to try the korean mre since I already knew about the us one. pretty disappointed at our heater since it produced so much steam like a kettle that it might reveal our location during war. Since military business corruption is such a running joke in our country we wondered if it was a business decision over purchasing the license to use the patented us mre flameless heater. We were rationed the korean mre during a morning of a two week training and we wanted to try the dishes separately like you, but our squad leader was like " what are you guys doing, just dump it all in the rice and eat it quick" so we were forced to just chow down it all, still a great meal tho

My dad was a Korean War veteran. He never spoke to us about his experiences. That said, he did often mention how very cold the winters were.
@dingdingdangdong5 ай бұрын
How cold the winter in Korea is is when I was serving in 2013 when I visited an engineering water purification vehicle at night during outdoor training in Inje, Gangwon-do, and saw that the thermometer was damaged. The thermometer stopped at -35C(-31F) Celsius.

I’m seriously wandering, when you open the meal pouches , why do you always tear the smallest hole and struggle to squeeze out the contents? Why not just open it all the way so you don’t have to squeeze it out

South Korean military requested the heating pack that can operate in -30 celsius. So they can use it like in the Chosen reservoir. And Gangwon province, South Korea is also extremely cold in winter.

These 2 meals looked great! This would have been a treat down range or in the field. The cobbler is always good, but I liked it room temp instead of heating it. Try it like that next time. God bless you brother and your family as well.

when I was in military, I usually put everything in the paper bowl and mixed them and ate it. I didn't like the pound cake so I gave it to others and only ate the chocolate ball. There is also another type of mre called 특전식(special force meal or something like that in english). That was really bad. Rock hard stuff that felt like breaking my teeth, bland rice cake which has literally no taste at all, etc.

spicy food is good for hot weather because I guess it makes you sweat and it basically cools you off. I think it's the same with mexican food, which tends to be a bit spicy

Here Korean. Thanks for the comment about kimchi. The difference between Chinese pao cai and kimchi is the fermentation process. Chinese pao cai uses salt and vinegar, but Korean adds protein amino acids such as shrimp paste to give kimchi its savory flavor. Some regions of Korea also ferment it with fish and shellfish. So Korean kimchi can be the base of Korean meat stew, or like the kimchi you just had, stir-fried with oil (with ground beef) and eaten with rice. Thanks for the great video.

When I was in, there was a guy in my platoon that would make peach cobbler by crushing up the crackers and making a paste, reconstituting the peaches and adding the creamer & sugar from the accessory packet, then folding it into that paste and cooking it in the ground in the foil packet. Delicious!

Funny thing is me and my colleagues in CFC used to enjoy US MRE more than ours. I always swapped my MRE with MRE No.6(beef taco was it?) cause I was obsessed with it. It was always a pleasure training and planning medical support with USFK Surgeons.

You have to melt the chocolate and eat it with pound cake! You have to mix rice, sausage, kimchi and meatballs! I thought, but seeing that I was eating right made me feel at ease. It was fun because it reminded me of eating an MRE that was close to its expiration date. i love this video :)
