I watched this series a few times before I left for basic 2 years ago. It's mostly accurate, but there was a lot more yelling and chaos in weeks 0-3. We started to get the hang of things around week 4. And by week 6, we had the whole daily routine locked down pretty well. Every once in a while after week 5, somebody would get too comfortable and do something stupid, setting us back to "week 0 mode" for an unspecified amount of time. Just stay locked in, shut up, do what you're told, and never get too comfortable and you'll be fine. Good luck to anyone leaving soon!

Montgomery just rubs me the wrong way. The way he talks about his fellow Airmen is very judgmental. Just because they weren't raised like him doesn't mean that they don't have the discipline like him. Everyone is different and no one is the same. Don't judge a book by its cover.

Trainee Montgomery needs to understand that not everyone’s childhood is gonna be like his. Every person in the world has their own background, not all are the same. So, he’s right, he is petty.
@nottherealjk
@nottherealjk 2 жыл бұрын
You can be petty but productive with other member of the flight. I'm sure he's not the only one who feels that way. He just happens to be the only person interviewed who said it. You find that type of attitude in any work environment.

I kind of get wheres he’s coming from though. The lazy people are normally the ones who have had easy childhoods. Expecting things to get handed to them, then the entire flight of 50+ is constantly punished and held back because they lack the disciple.
@Its_Just_Zachary
@Its_Just_Zachary 2 жыл бұрын
@@mariahsjourney356 It’s why those kind of people shouldn’t be in the military. If they’re so lazy and laid back and don’t listen to others and or do what they’re told and listen to people of proper authority, the military is not for them. Plain and simple.

Seems like his complaining (whether it’s to the cameras in privacy or to others not in his flight) is his coping mechanism, unfortunately I don’t think he realizes how that open complaining affects those around him and how they view him. He may be king of the misfits but that still makes him a misfit too

As someone who recently went through the process, your biggest struggle is going to be your relationships with your flight members. Make friends and DONT start grudges, it'll do nothing but hold you back and keep you from the help you need. Take your time and study the material you're given, everything is important and will help you later in your career, even the mundane stuff like history. Most of all DONT let your fear overpower you, your MTI is there to help you, and leadership is only there to move you forward. It's all a mental game, even the physical parts.

I'm late, but I went through BMT in summer of 1991. 6 weeks only, no warrior training. We had the obstacle course (confidence course), 1/2 day of weapons classroom training, 1/2 day of range training to qualify with the M16, and that was it. I did chuckle on the Chain of Command part. Is it Wing first, or Group? 7 years later, it comes second hand. Also the sheet listing ranks!

The preparation our Battlefield Airmen receive now compared to the BMT I went through in '99 is amazing. Man that bomb threat drill brought back a memory. I was on EC with our EC monitor when the bomb threat evacuation started. He told everyone to take the latrine exit and they did, but the flight exited through our usual stairwell (right in front of the "bomb"). We did all the checks but didn't warn our MTI. Simultaneously our sister flight was doing an evacuation drill (don't know if it was the same or not) as well and messed up that as well. The MTI (He wasn't ours for long) got after both flight's ECs including me but took the opportunity to go after the EC monitor that was standing next to me. Was hoping to see something similar this week but maybe it happened off camera.

Montgomery wouldn’t have lasted 1 hour in my flight. He gives off that “Holier Than Thou” vibe and almost every video I’ve seen he’s been chewed out and not taking the initiative to learn on his own. The other trainees in the documentary including Garcia, even though things did not work out for him at BMT, were very unique and decent wingmen!!!! Montgomery I hope has grown from this. Not everyone who had a tough childhood is disciplined and not everyone who had a decent childhood lacks discipline. He was a close minded trainee and not a good wingman in his flight. For any recruits headed to BMT, don’t be a Montgomery in the flight. You have to go in with an open mind, communicate with your flight, and be a good wingman. For 8 1/2 weeks the other 51 trainees in your flight are your family. You may not like everyone in your flight but you will need them to help you through BMT. You never know, your first military friends/family will always come from your flight at BMT. Best of luck to anyone that is heading to BMT!!!!!

Retired Air Force here. It is slowly moving towards a more combat mindset. When I went through in 98 it was 7 weeks of marching and gym class. Focusing on attention to detail. 90% of AF jobs are mainly support type activities. Once you get out of basic and onto tech school is when if you are in a more combat oriented job you get the training. My first 4 years I was a fighter crew chief and only time we saw weapons was on our yearly qual training. I cross trained after my 4 into Helicopter Flight Engineer doing Combat Rescue rest of my career. 12 months of training for the job doing survival schools and flight schools and aircraft weapons training. Once at unit they send you through advanced shooter courses and at the range all the time to get you proficient and capable with all types of weapons. We would also do Joint training exercises doing small team tactics, overland with our PJ's to enable us to work as a solid team in any situation. What really got the push was during OEF and OIF when Airmen were getting tasked with convoy duty and really seeing how far behind the curve our combat training was. We will eventually get there, but I dont ever seeing it getting to Army or Marine standards. You guys go through hell.

So I’m going to give a tip to anyone who is planning on joining a branch of the armed forces but has never handled a rifle before. It is not necessary to go out and get or borrow a Ar-15 to familiarizes yourself with your basic military rifle. There is a break action .223 on the market whose weight and feel when shooting is comparable enough. Getting range time for that is alot easier and cheaper than an AR-15 and getting accustomed to firing it and feeling it’s kick means that there is less of a leap of experience when you get to basic. I finished up in the reserves and while we couldn’t take them out to the range during drill a couple of us had these break action .223 in our personal possession and would invite trainees awaiting their departure date out to a county range with their parents on our free time for a little familiarity experience with carrying it and firing it so that it was just one less thing they were going in blind in basic
