In the Uk I have often seen people wearing Doc Marten boots and shoes with kilts, with or without hose and flashes, and it works. I don't know if you have DMs over there but they have been in and out of fashion here since the 1960s and still look cool. If you're not sure of what I mean look at the boots the Droogs wear in A Clockwork Orange.

I normally don't worry too much about what I'm wearing with my kilts. I normally wear a utility kilt and treat it like I would a pair of cargo shorts. I do agree about tucking your shirt in though. This tends to help hold your kilt up as well

One thing I started doing because of bartending, instead of wearing kilt hose I bought colored soccer socks. They are almost knee length so I can bunch them up at the top of my tennis shoes and still have that look without looking too much with say tennis shoes.

I’ve been breaking that sweater rule rofl I’ve I have two thick corded sweaters. I guess it just looks more formal to me and shows off all of the kilt.

The secret is in the hose. A good selection of hose in different colors helps you mix and match. The color of the hose helps you pull the shirt or sweater together. As for shoes I have a pare of ghillies for more formal attire and a pare of black lace up boots for informal wear.

I almost only wear a kilt in summer and winter, always with combat boots! As you say, the overall picture should fit and remain individual!!! I am of the opinion that there is no garment more manly than a well-fitting kilt !!! Greetings from Germany 🤘🤘🤘

When ever I go out and about I try and look my best when I wear a kilt.. I also try and be on my best behavior and I try very hard not to do or say something dumb as I feel like I am representing not only myself but my culture and the like. I came home from town the other day... and when I when into the house... My wife looked at me and started laughing... I had my sweater on backwards...ARG!..I quickly looked at my Kilt to make sure the pleats where in the back, or kilt not upside down or what ever. I had hurried out of the house that morning... And to think I had been running around town... I was so embarrassed.... moral of the story....stop by the mirror take and a close look before heading out the door.

I generally don't think a kilt looks right if too much skin shows below the knee. For casual kilting a universally wear 8 to 10 inch boots and black or grey boot socks that reach the bottom of my calves, plus a tight fitting T-shirt in warm weather or a Henley collar river driver shirt.

Agreed. I bought myself a pair of 6" tactical boots to wear with kilt and looking at myself in photos it looks like I need something more substantial to "anchor" the lower look

When wearing a kilt can I wear a normal suit jacket and waistcoat or not.

They have a video on that, you probably saw it by now, but it isn't recommended you wear a normal suit jacket. The longer cut covers the top of the kilt and falls over the sporran making it look a bit sloppy. Hence why kilt jackets and vests are cut shorter.

When I where a kilt as casual I still wear kilt hose and flashes but it’s cause of the look of my legs ( freckle. On legs that I don’t like to show ) so I wear hose with sneakers

me it depend whawt kilt i wear black utility kilt i can wear any hose (red green ancient bottle green, black or offwhite(cream) for my macleod of assynt mostly wear one of the 2 green but some time black or creamfor fl gunn ancient wear green or black heritage of scotland mostly wear cream (cause the solide purple flashes look better on cream hose than black) macleod of lewis mostly black or cream (ihave also a yellow hose from sport kilt ( that i wear wiht that one some time wear that hose with black solid flashes) my festival celtic i wear green mostly or red my macrae haunting i wear green (its a new kilt so i have only worn twice so far but it will be green black or cream)(will try to get some blue too) when ill get my brown watch will be also green or black or cream hose but ill need soon to get more hose of collor for flashes i usualy try to get them tratan but some time i couldnt (example my festival celtic of quebec i couldnt so ill wear or balck or red flashes ) my black watch will be mostly black or red (red as to me for flash universal collor) the kilt that i dont hae the matching flashes are black ripstop utility klit(but i have black flashes in pv) i have festival celtic wish i can wear black flash or red flash gun encien i wear uusaly black flash with green hose but if i wear balck hose i wear red flashes ect

Hi my partner turns 50 in April and she’s trying to organise a race day with meal. As I’ve never been to the races I’m unsure as to what to wear and everyone before you all say why is she organising her 50th well that’s because all the staff at our work place are going where as I’m planning on taking her to Paris for 4 nights . I’m here because I’m trying to figure out what guys wear to race days. I thought about a Scottish kilt. Would this be over kill ?

you can pull off an aloha with a plain colored utility kilt, untucked. especially a "pants waist" one. Still better, if that shirt is important to wear, to leave it unbuttoned and have a tucked in tshirt underneath. and it has to be a plain plain plain neutral colored kilt.

As a strength and conditioning coach who strives to live the high-performance lifestyle that I preach to my athletes, I almost exclusively wear five toe shoes. I have found that if I wear calf high socks with my kilt, it looks just fine if I’m also wearing five toe shoes. My boss allows me to wear a kilt to work on Fridays, so most Fridays I'm wearing a kilt, a T-shirt, cat pie socks, and five toe shoes, and it looks just fine. The only difference between that and what I wear to work every other day of the week is that I swap my athletic shorts and compression pants out for a kilt and calf high socks.

All personal preference but I say yes, plenty of kilt wearers do it at fests when the weather is right, it's just a sweater with a hood so why not? I have a black Albannach hoodie that I wear with my MacDougall kilt. The hoodie has a white and red design on the back, which compliments the primarily red with white accents of the tartan. If the colors are complimentary it's gonna look good.

Sorry, I'm old school Scottish if you wear a kilt for a party or an informal event the rule should always be what you wear above is your choice but below the kilt, it needs to be high socks [not sports socks] and boots....Never trainers/sneakers or anything else...

New daily wearer who lives in Kansas with 110F (about 43C) heat indexes hears never leave your shirt untucked… Said person says “Oh crud!” Lol. In all seriousness is it acceptable under those circumstances if just doing work or hiking/biking? I’ve also been wearing those solid color “breathable” t-shirts, walking shoes or combat boots depending on circumstances, and a boonie hat. Now I’m questioning my whole wardrobe. I had figured no tank tops so solid color t-shirts. And, a slouch or giggle hat doesn’t look good on me so go with the related boonie. (This is all work related and not my night on the town or dressing up attire LOL.) but… 🤷‍♂️ I am NOT good with fashion or any of that lol.

Start with a utility kilt. Fewer "rules" to follow and easier to coordinate other things with. You can treat a utility kilt the same as cargo shorts when you're deciding what to wear with it.
