As far as maintaining interest, I didn’t have a dip in interest (only about a year and a half in though!), but I’ve found that getting involved in other aspects made me appreciate kilts more and the culture in general. I started learning Irish Dancing back in January, and started learning Scots Gaelic a couple of months ago. Music, food, crafts, etc are all huge aspects to the culture and can usually find you a social group based around/involving those aspects and I know that being around others while I’m feeling depressed/down/unmotivated usually helps make me feel better. But also, don’t be afraid to take a break, like the guys said. Your kilts will still be there waiting for you. You don’t have to throw them out or give them away, just give yourself time to explore another interest, try something new, or just get a mental rest from it. I have 3-4 different hobbies at any given time, and my brain tends to flick back and forth between each one every month-ish. Sometimes, I’ll scan the USAK/Mills’ websites for new tartans I want obsessively, and other times I’m looking for new knitting techniques, new sourdough ideas, etc. But basically, don’t force it, and don’t make yourself feel bad for not having the same enthusiasm every single day for it. Inhumane are complex creatures 😆

I find it easier to wear a kilt around complete strangers than people I know. And it makes my day when they compliment me on it.

I'm okay with perfect strangers. I'm okay with good friends. It's the people in the middle I have an issue with. Neighbors with whom I have a nodding acquaintance, those I see when I'm walking my dog, etc. My boss is okay with it. He'll give me a heads up sometimes. "Hey, we're gonna be up on ladders tomorrow, so think about what you're gonna wear". 😂

Regarding maintaining interest in kilts, as Rocky and Erik said, the initial enthusiasm is going to diminish. That's normal, and not something you really should fight to prevent. I tend to wear kilts for social occasions, but not for everyday situations. I wore it to National Night Out. I wore it to the museum. I wore it when I went out axe throwing. I'll be wearing it when we have guests over in a couple weeks. I wear kilts enough that I no longer feel like a peacock just because I'm wearing it. On the other hand, the kilt ensures that I'm dressed up more than the average guy. In addition, it often provides a conversation starter. I appreciate both of those things in social situations. That provides me with sufficient motivation to continue wearing kilts.

Fact check: the Emu War was in 1932, not 1875.

For the question about going to a different time period, how about going forward in time, say 100-150 years, to see how the kilt and other highland wear develops from today forward? I think that would be interesting. The question didn't specify past or future.

Interesting! We agree it would be intriguing to go back then!
