Caveat: I'm a knitter and novice sewer who is currently studying fibers and how fiber choice impacts product outcome... both in knitting and sewing garments. Wool is a wonderous fiber. I think you were talking about worsted vs woolen spun when you were speaking of density vs spongy feeling. All tweeds and tartans are twills. So, tartan twill is always made from worsted spun fiber, making it very durable and dense whereas tweed twills can be made from woolen spun fiber which is less durable but traps more air and therefore is warmer. You wouldn't make kilt hose out of woolen spun fiber either because you'd wear through the heels after a few wears. That's also why the kilt hose have nylon in them. The nylon adds durability and the lycra adds stretch. The acrylic keeps the cost down. The merino makes them extra soft. A BFL and CVM fiber would be less soft but more durable. Silk could replace nylon for durability and add warmth if someone wanted to knit/have knit a pair of kilt hose that is 100% natural fiber. I'd recommend a BFL/Merino/Mulberry silk blend for that. Warm, durable, and pretty soft. Swap out the silk for nylon and make the wools superwash if you want to be able to toss them in a garment bag into the washer on gentle cycle. Those different sheep breeds I mentioned, BFL and CVM... Cotswold... and many more,, as well as where in the world the wool is sourced from (New Zealand vs Ireland vs the Western US vs China) are also why some twills, be they tweeds or tartans, would feel different from others. Threads per inch, number of plies per thread, etc will also factor into feel... and ultimately the cost.

I sew most of my own ties. neck ties are cut on the bias because that is the direction fabric stretches the most. The bias cut then allows the best application of the fabric to the task of bending into tight curves when being tied.

I would totally buy a Nordic Heritage tartan kilt if one became available, as I have more Nordic than Gaelic heritage, but with my research, I found there might be more within both cultures due to trading and some settling. That being said, yes, I would definitely buy

A necktie can be made with the warp or weft depending on the needs of the wearer, but they're usually made on the bias because they tie better, lay better, and don't feel quite as constricting as a garot! . . . for those that want to know.

Ties are bias cut for function. Much easier to manipulate bias fabric when wrapping and tying.

My mother's maiden name is Smith but not of the Scottish clan but of the English surname and her father's mother is of Scottish descent of the clan surname Johnston, I know that it's all on preference of what ever one wants but would you guys personally go with Smith even though it's not of the Scottish clan Smith or Johnston my great grandmother's maiden name? Guys, I realize I'm late to the party here, but with the US Army having gone back to the Ike jacket as one of their issue uniform jackets, you might be able to meet an economys of scale in purchasing from the government supplier now and be able to offer true Ike jackets at a reasonable price. Just a thought.
