Some computers, which have USB-C ports, support ONLY USB 3.0 at 5 Gbps. Some computers, which have USB-C ports, support BOTH USB 3.0 at 5 Gbps and USB 3.1 at 10 Gbps. Some computers, which have USB-C ports, support ALL USB 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 (Thunderbolt 3.0 at 40 Gbps) When you buy a new computer, you make sure to look for the right USB-C ports speed you want for your needs. If it has a C port it can not be USB 3.0. The C port is introduced with USB 3.1 which also adds the protocol to negotiate who is the master and who is the slave. USB 3.1, gen 1 has the negotiation protocol but does not increase the speed over 3.0. USB. The MacBook is USB 3.1, gen 1 with the C port. USB 3.1, gen 2 adds the higher 10 Gbps speed. With a type-C port you must have at least USB 3.1, gen 1. You may have gen 2 and you may also have other protocols such as thunderbolt 3. display port, or some future protocol. I believe USB 3.1 also allows the type-A port to be used on the host computer and fully supports a type-A to type-C cable. I believe without USB 3.1, a type-A to type-C cable is only supported with the type-C being used on a slave device, like a disk drive.

I wouldn't say "It's finally here" forreal until it's common on motherboards (versus having to dig to find a mobo with it) and there's more than 1 port on a motherboard. ATM it feels the same as when motherboards started coming with Thunderbolt - only like 1 at a time, rare, then they disappeared.

One thing that I think will be confusing is the power thing. I looked it up a little while ago, and the 100W happens at 20V. I think it has a few different voltages that it operates on in order to deliver 100W. I still find it hard to believe that a connector that small can deliver 5A at 20V though. Unless they are using many pins for power, I don't think that 5A can pass through that thing without melting it.

gamerpaddy The standard defines 100 Watts power delivery only at 20 Volts. Which only results in 5 Amps. Which still gives you a warm plug but you should be fine. Quote from Wikipedia: "Devices can request higher currents and supply voltages from compliant hosts - up to 2 A at 5 V (for a power consumption of up to 10 W), and optionally up to 3 A or 5 A at either 12 V (36 W or 60 W) or 20 V (60 W or 100 W)."

Non C usb plugs are pretty easy to get right first time. with horizontal ports hold the cable so that the usb logo (the tree with the circle, triangle and square) is facing upwards. with vertical ports twist the cable so the logo aligns with the top of the motherboard. not having to look for the logo is an advantage - but you don't have to make plugging in earlier USB cables any more painful than it has to be.

SpoonLinks well yeah, I agree with you. It's a nice little new plug, but most people just praize it for its ability to be plugged in both ways, which for me wouldn't be THE killer argument.

enginesnblades I don't know how you use your devices, but I used to have a Nexus 4 with Micro USB that still had a solid connection before it died due to a different reason. But I don't have anything to use it with and, frankly, I feel by the time I do have devices to use with it, it will be upgraded. Has type C been actually, really finalized or will it be like HDM where it seemingly getting upgrading 'all the time' until they finally stuck with something?

Shadow Heart USB-C is currently being used for the Google Pixel, but other than that, I do not know of any devices that use USB-C at the moment. I do expect to see this change in the future, though.
@Malus15318 жыл бұрын
Well some manufacturer has to give first. If I were building a flash drive or something to sell, it wouldn't make much sense to make it USB type C since not that many computers can accept it. A motherboard manufacturer can include a type C without taking too much away from the rest of the mobo, while still including some forward compatibility. If enough of us (and laptop makers) start using motherboards with type C we might start to see more devices with it.
@shmookins8 жыл бұрын
Malus1531 True. I'm still surprised by how relatively 'scarce' USB3 still is. It is also odd seeing some new devices having some USB3 ports and the rest USB2. I mean come early on. The new Nintendo Switch will do that too (I think) and that's a 2017 device. I know it may not be practical, but manufacturers could produce dual USB3 and Type C devices and cables. It will hasten adoption and then everyone wins. Think 2 years ahead not just the coming quarter.
@Malus15318 жыл бұрын
+Shadow Heart I agree that dual cables would be nice. As to still having USB2 ports, say on cases and motherboards, there are a number of reasons. Probably most important is that USB3 uses more bandwidth/lanes. If a motherboard allocates more HSIO lanes to USB3, that takes away from other ports/interfaces as there are a limited number of lanes. For many devices, such as keyboards and mice, USB3 bandwidth is not needed, and making those ports USB3 is just a waste of lanes. The internal USB3 headers are also larger with more pins, which is more costly and takes up more space. For cases, aside from accommodating the restrictions noted above, putting only USB3 prevents anyone from installing an older USB2 only motherboard (if they want to use any panel connections).
@shmookins8 жыл бұрын
Malus1531 Aaaahhh. That makes sense. Now I won't feel annoyed seeing motherboards with USB2 still. Cheers, mate.

I think it would be much more pleasurable to watch Linus's videos on a 1080p 60FPS settings compared to a higher res like 4k. Please like if you agree so Linus notices. -------------- Regards :)

I can see 3.1 being handy for some devices, for example digital still and video cameras and scanners where they need to transfer a lot of data, for a lot of other stuff, it's not really needed.

Type C is crap. Really only 1 advantage. You can put it in any way. Standard (real) USB can do anything it can, and it's speed will continue to progress. Type C is only good on a phone, but is crap on the other end. A ton of adapters are a pain. And what's wrong with the Samsung USB 3.1 thing? It is completely backwards compatible, and not that bad if you ask me.
@fray27489 жыл бұрын
+Alex_2259 The connector is fragile and big, that's the problem.
@fray27489 жыл бұрын
***** yeah that would be possible, but why not just more type C ports?
@lehanjones2428 жыл бұрын
did you even listen to the video? Linus said multiple times that USB c was for the future, where you WON'T need time of adapters?

+김동우 (Cheers4Android) They already did, USD, Thunderbolt, and displayport all switched to type-C connectors, most new phones use Type-C, all new motherboards contain a type-c connector, all laptops do aswell, it's over, type-c is not only the future, it's also the present.

I still don't get the reversible aspect. I've not failed to get the correct orientation for at least 3 years. The top is usually marked with the usb or manufacturer logo.

Type-C is also Thunderbolt, it is not a competitor it is a new slandered connector for all types of uses, including USB 3.1 and it will replace the RJ45 connector as well so all Ethernet cable will become Type-C
@j.m.748 жыл бұрын
4:16 I'm guessing that connector isn't so forgotten after all, since a Toshiba 1TB external HD I purchased (a couple months ago) has it .

What no one mentions is that the Type C connector standard actually supports heaphones with mic over the same connector.

Yes but those headsets have an integrated sound card, where in this case you wouldn't need one.

Something else about USB-C he didn't mention is the curved front that makes it slide in much easier with no edges to catch.

i really like the universal plugin direction, just plug and it works :) and backwards compatibility is a great plus!
