@@PowerCertAnimatedVideos one false claim tho, at 1:10 is that it makes devices easier to configure. Not always true. In the case of ps/2 keyboard and mice, there is no drivers. Before anyone go off an tangent about never experiencing having to install keyboard drivers, there is still drivers but windows does it for you. In some systems, usb keyboards arent always recognized, especially in bios, and can cause problems while ps/2 would always work. So configuration is NOT always easier. And self configuration only applies to common types of accessories that supports windows generic drivers, like printers mice microphones keyboards drives and keyboards. Sometimes you need drivers because windows doesnt have the appropriate generic drivers

Some minor details missing in the video: USB version names have became quite chaotic. For example, the USB 3.0 is currently named USB 3.2gen 1, the USB 3.1 is called USB 3.2gen2, and then the USB 3.2 is USB 3.2gen2x2. I wouldn't be surprised if it became even more complicated. USB-C can reach up to 100W of power delivery, and doesn't necessary have to reach its USB 3.1 standard. For example, some motherboards only have "USB 3.0 type C" connector (and header). If your phone supports fast charging and you're looking to buy a new motherboard (and planning to plug your phone into it), try looking for something specific: USB-C 3.2 gen 2 connector (10Gbits/s speed). Why? Because this connector can output up to 15W of power, compared to 5W on slower USB connectors (even the type C, if it only supports 5Gbits/s speed). You can use some USB-C cables/connectors for transfering "display data", as some of them support 'displayport functionality'. USB type A doesn't always have 4 pins. From what I know, faster ports have more pins.

This is such a well made video about USB. Would you do a video going deeper into USB Type-C and PD? Like how it works physically and digitally. I've read about the different sink and source devices and how they have different resistors for different voltages, and things further complicate with A-C connectors. There's not a single video that talk about these details.

Some extra points: * Lots of devices that have type B 3.0 and micro B 3.0 will allow you to use type B and micro B without the additional 5 pins * Lots of manufacturers don't adhere to the colour standards; I've come across a sleeper port on a desktop which is blue, a keyboard with a purple connector and a modern mouse with a white connector * There also exist power-only USB ports which I believe were originally colour coded red at one point

One important thing that's also worth mentioning is that a USB-C connector doesn't define the speed of the cable. You can have a USB-C/USB-A cable with 2.0 speeds, but also with 3.0 speeds. Cable max length is also very different and can differ from 3m for USB 3.0 to 15m for USB 1.2.

For those of us who just want to do our work and don't give a rat's patootie about the machines we use as tools, this is all completely unnecessary. You notice that there has only been one change to electrical plugs since electricity became available: a grounding hole was added. There is no more reason to screw around with computer cables than there is with electrical cables.

Great video. Minor point you missed out. The power output of the USB ports differ eg USB 2 only provides 500mA, while USB 3 can provide 900mA, this is important because some more modern devices like external drives need more power but if connected to the older style USB 2 will not work properly. This actually happened to me. And here is something nice, the MICRO USB 3 devices can still work with the standard Micro USB cable (eg USB A - Micro USB like for older smartphones) as well but at the slower speed.

Today I learned more about USB than I ever thought I'd know. On a serious note tho I do hope in this decade that we see type C become the new universal standard for USB. It transmits lots of data quickly, it charges, it can be flipped over, and it doesn't matter which end of a cable goes where. It's already used to charge MacBooks, Nintendo Switches, and some Android phones. It should be more widely available.

For C to C; Except, it isn’t standardized, and breaks really easy. I can’t tell between my charger and my ports. There’s ENDLESS DONGLES, and just no good cooperation with anyone. I hate it, so much. And remember, this is supposed to be universal, not… a weird mess in between. In conclusion, it seems that USB is now SB. And, for A to C, they could just say it’s another B type.

Normally any USB 3.X ports are usually the same blue colour, while fancier motherboards may have different colours for only aesthetic purposes.

Apple has a habit of mucking around with the USB standard. I remember when they keyed the plugs and sockets to make them less universal. As far as I can tell, the Lightning connector is just another attempt to lock users into their own inferior protocol (I won't call Lightning a standard as, by definition, a standard has to be adopted by more than one company).

Mini B persisted a surprisingly long time in external optical drives. Ergonomically, it's the best connector before Type C--you can actually see which way up to insert it, if you look closely.

Maybe they just noticed the errors and misleading statements in the video. Maybe they were disappointed that he didn't even mentioned things like the USB-C alt-modes, Thunderbolt, USB Power Delivery, or the different features/ standards a USB-C cable can support etc. The video would be a lot longer if he would explain everything though.

@@InfernoPhoenixFX In 2018 the designers for USB in hopes to cut costs and shoe horn in USB 3.2 Gen2X2 as the "easy choice" for licensing profit reasons, decided with the release of USB 3.2 to change the name of USB 3.0 to 3.1 and 3.2, same change was done to USB 3.1, however due to misleading marketing concerns, they added Gen 1 to USB 3.1 Gen 1, and 3.2 Gen 1 to represent USB 3.0, aswell as the Gen 2 moniker to represent USB 3.1. Essentially rendering the changes pointless LOL, But they definitely invented something special.

surprised it took engineers 24 years to make a connector that has one single orientation, and the same ends on both sides. Type C is almost the perfect cable.

@@avonire The downside is that companies won't 🤬ing use it and instead keep giving us the Type A and micro Type B garbage. I've started boycotting any product that features a rechargeable battery if it uses micro B instead of type C.
