This was a great video, full of information. I never understood why the USB mics were always so poorly spoken about. My Yeti mic is USB and sounds great, to me. I was thinking of buying something else until I listened to this video. Great lessons here. By the way, your voice sounds great! You have a new subscriber here!

Thank you for this. I'm tired of so many professionals looking down on USB mics. The 2 I have now come complete with headphone jacks, Gain and stands. I've done a bunch of recordings which after listening to, you wouldn't tell the difference between a full blown studio and a home set up. I've even patched in a free lines for a huge movie dub in an emergency and that was in the theatres. All from the much ridiculed USB mic. My first ones were lacking but the technology is really coming along. Good to hear something positive for a change. Thanks again :-)

Great video! Several years old but still relevant! Let’s add some more insight to this. 1) A gain knob on the microphone won’t always deliver what it’s inclusion promises. I have seen multiple USB microphones with a gain knob, where the inclusion was a mere afterthought at best. I have had the misfortune to use microphones, where I still had to use the windows volume control on top of cranking the gain knob all the way up. Don’t fall for microphones of brands that produce gaming equipment as well! 2) the level slider for a Windows Audio device is always there and it can mess up the audio of a USB microphone. For every USB microphone, this slider provides software gain, which is inferior to hardware gain, provided by an actual amplifier. The reason for this is, that all the signal, including the self-noise, is being raised in volume, whereas hardware gain raises the actual signal and if you don’t overdo the hardware gain, you can manage to get a much less noisy output. So for a USB microphone, this slider should be set as low as possible and only as high as needed. Ideally, this slider is to be set to 0 of course. The way the level slider on a USB microphone’s recording device works by the way is the exact opposite to an audio interface, where said slider acts as a fader and thus should always remain at 100%.
@TheRandomINFJ2 жыл бұрын
Why would you set a slider to 0? This confuses me. 0 would be inaudible.
@MichaelW.19802 жыл бұрын
On an audio interface, yes. There the slider of the recording device of an audio interface, does act as a fader. And set it to anything lower than 100 would reduce your signal to noise ratio, raising the self noise. ***That being said, I was talking about usb microphones.*** On a USB microphone recording device, the slider on the recording device does not reduce the signal the lower you set it but add software gain, the higher you set it. At 0 It will not be muted, but quieter. The issue about software gain is this: Software gain, while raising the signal, will also raise the noise floor on the microphone signal by an equal amount. And if it’s too high, you will both, loose headroom and lower your signal to noise ratio, which will make the self noise of the usb microphone harder to manage.

Aliso Creek Voice Over Classes I just picked up a Blue Yeti Basic (black). I tested it next to my tower computer with the gain turned all the way down. It's virtually silent. There is only the very slightest of high pitched whines that doesn't even show up as a wave in the Audacity program because it's so small. I was surprised that I could get a clean recording in the same room with my tower fans running, much less outside of a soundbooth. I read some tips that a powered usb adapter would get rid of the hum/whine, because they thought it was something about magnetic field of the power supply and fan traveling through the usb cable. Do you have thoughts on this?

I think you also can't overestimate how important acoustic treatment is. You can have as USD 2,000 mic, but as long as your room sounds bad the recording will always sound amateurish (cheaper mics might even sound better in such an environment). Luckily there are many youtube videos that explain how to do it, and it isn't even expensive. But of course you need a space to do your recordings and that's my biggest problem.

24bit files are 50% larger than 16 bit files so the difference is not that great. Also you should always record voice over in mono not stereo (you only have one mouth and one mic). Stereo makes files that are twice as large with an identical recording in each channel. And yes, so far I've never been asked for 24 bit recordings.

Thx for the upload! I had a snowball which broke(service said it was technical failure), got a new mic. It broke just one day before I was about to start recording for a VO project with a deadline of 10 days only. It was so frustrating and stressful. I am not very well knowledgeable about microphones and I watched some reviews online : comparison with the iCE version. I finally bought it since it was cheaper and promised to have the same cardioid quality as the Snowball but a little bit quieter, however it didn''t seem that way and luckily the producer did accept my recordings(I guess he didn't really have a choice since the VO actor before me was fired and he was late with his project). I would like to upgrade my mic to one that is of great quality and will not break(could it be that USB mics break more often than XLR mics?). William, if you were to choose between a Blue Yeti Standard and a Rode NT-USB, which one would you go for in terms of mic quality and sound? Any other mics in that price range?

I have a small question I want to ask, would you consider the t.bone SC 450 USB (german) medium grade microphone with only a -10 db *gain switch* and lowcut filter switch a good option compared to the samson g-track I own which has a *gain knob*? rerouting the audio in my pc only adds a couple of milliseconds of delay, I don't really notice it myself. I would like to know because I saw a good deal on the t.bone mic + a shockmount + a popfilter which was cheaper than buying the things individually, also it will double for if my cousin wants to record vocals instead of having the base plate of the g-track which doesn't hinder more vibrations than holding it manually

William, Very informative, lucid and concise description of mic fundamentals. I like your style. :) Now, I'm new at video production and as yet have not done any real, intentional narration or voice overs. I've leaned a bit about making time lapse and video's now, and will soon be ready to practice voice overs and narration. I WILL NEED A MIC !!! I like the idea of a turnkey mic set up w/ USB or 3.5 (1/8") connection to my laptop pc. About my interests : I do wood working & wood turning projects in a small home shop and would like to make "how to" video's. I also do Night Sky photography & time lapse video's as well as wildlife video's and time lapse video's I could certainly narrate. I have a Canon T3i for imaging. While I could use a camera mic (prolly LAV mic) at times, I think I'd like to voice over or narrate my video's most of the time. I'd love to know your opinion / advice , regarding a recommendation for a quality, beginners mic. Maybe one for the $150 mark you set or lower (cheaper for me is appealing :) lol I've researched quite a bit before finding you and have found vast differences between mics that include settings for normal, -10db & even -20db choices. Others have reverb or echo knobs,, ......... , very nice. Some have playback headphone jacks w/ separate volume wheels and many have different directional choices or polar patterns to choose from. That said, is it possible to get a mic in this price range w/ a cardioid or shotgun type pattern and most of these other features? I'd like to know your opinion and/or recommendation as you seem to be one of the few, most knowledgeable and understandable, as well as believable personalities I've come across. I'm 52yrs old so maybe I don't trust the millennials as much as I trust someone like you that may have the same values and ethics I was brought up w/. :) Anyway, thanks for your generous consideration, sincerely, Steph P.S. Sorry bout' the book !!! lol :)

Hi! I have a few questions if you don't mine. I'm not sure which microphone i should use for a top notch audio quality for my type of voice and my working needs. I'm on a personal project. Its about reading a novel and recording it on good audio gears for people who have visual problems. I have a good sounding radiophonic voice. slithly (or fairly) deeper than average tone. I am interested in 2 microphones : - 1) Electro-Voice Re20 - 2) Shure SM7(b?) In some occasion i know i might need a flat recording of my voice. But i also know that in some other occasions, compression, loudness boost and effects (to sound more FM like) could be needed. I was wondering which of those mics is best for my voice-over audiobook project but also for a more FM radio sounding for further works such as narrative over videos. And how about the external sound card? I heard about the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and wonder if its good enough or too much for my needs? I wont use my mic for music instruments neither a second microphone. I just need to record my talking voice for a good sounding. I also wonder if i need other gears to process the recorded work (like pre-amp, e.q. compressor, effects, etc) Is it already build in the Scarlett Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 or uin any other model / brand would suits better my needs? I plan to use Wavelab 6 or 7. Thanks!
@AlisoCreekVoiceOver9 жыл бұрын
+Fabrice “Balfégor” Tremblay both of these mics are "dynamic" mics. My problem with them is they tend to pick up electrical hum. Also I like a 20-20000hz frequency range. The Shure goes up to that but the EV only goes to 18000 which looses a little high end and "air" in the sound. Both will give you that FM sound if you talk close to the mic. Neither is a USB mic so you'll need the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 to plug the mic into to get the sound into the computer. The sound card is not involved in recording or playback--all that goes in and out through your USB buss. Finally any effects will be handled by your recording software. I hope this helps.
@Ralipsi9 жыл бұрын
+Aliso Creek Voice Over Classes Thanks for your quick answer. I dig deep to find what all the gears i need in order to get the job done. Rethinking about it, if i use one of those two, i need to buy an audio interface (A.I.) with a solid mic preamp with a lot of gain with minimal noise. That kind of AI is VERY costy. For instance, if i choose the EV RE20, it mean even the Scarlet 2i4 do not offer a decent preamp, even with a Cloud Lifter C-1. I would hear some ugly background noise (Humm or hiss) and to pay that much for bad results... So i'd need to buy a much more expensive A.I. such as Apollo Twin. So, instead, i'd rather go with a more afordable / convenient mic such as Rode NT USB which is still a decent mic for the price with no extra gear to buy and little to no setup complication. Now i know the Rode NT-USB is not in the same league than the EV RE20. Maybe you have other brand / model in mind for my specific situation. Thanks!

I have a spent a fortune to find the best USB microphone, and it is the Rode NT-USB. It has a nice clean range and 0 latency headphone monitoring. plug in your headphones and voila . There is no gain control on the mic itself, but that is no big deal for me. I just preset to my voice in my recording devices tab and I'm good to go. With all due respect , the gentle man said nothing about windscreens or pop filters, which are essential to recording great voice work with USB microphones or any microphone that doesn't have any built in pop filter material ...The Rode Podcaster does, but is more expensive and sounds tinny. Thank me later for this advice.

Hi, thanks for the help ! Also is it necessarry to have a good audio to match the usb system ? I mean, if the audio card within my computer is kind of cheap, do i need to buy an external one ? If by any chance you read this i’ll also ask : Will a mid-cheap microphone (as the ones you suggested) be more likely to catch the tiny yet undesired sounds such as a laptop’s ventilator ? (I know that cheap gaming’s mic do and expensive one’s don’t. But I don’t know how work mic used for singing)

+ThePolowan USB doesn't go through the audio card. The digitized signal goes directly into the recording software. If you use the computer speakers the audio IS played back through the audio card. Actually the best quality mics are more likely to pick up sounds like the computer fan so you have to isolate the computer a bit.
