TOC with timestamps at beginning of video. The Zoom LiveTrak L-8 is a mixer, "podcast-station" - and interface. For podcasts, a mix-minus has been implemented via TRRS connection. However, this does not work satisfactory for skype / webex / Zoom etc. calls via the Computer - or recordings with software like OBS Studio e.g. for KZbin, Zoom or Twitch Livestreams - in contrast to dedicated USB interfaces like the Behringer UM2 or the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. Here I show an easy solution, how a mix-minus can be realized in the interface mode via the USB - requiring no additional audio cables, conversion etc... This setting will also work for the Zoom Livetrak L-12. So - if you just need a USB mix minus, no need to go for a PodTrak P8 or PodTrak P4 ;)

Thank you. Indeed I have written ZOOM a mail with this suggestion, and got no response at all. 3 weeks after my mail they have released their Podtrak P8, which includes USB mix minus - and everything became clear to me. Nevertheless, this kind of company policy is not my favorit one - namely trying to force the customers to upgrade to another gear, because the L8/12/20 seems to miss an important feature, which, in principle, it actually has!

Another handy way for OBS is to make use of the ASIO support of the mixer, giving you access to each channel separately. The obs-asio plugin lets you then pick specific channels (or the master mix). Userful if you want to mix it in software!

the Mix Minus functionality really simplifies online chatting. really cool. Just a few notes about Scenes: Projects only save one set of mixer settings; Master, A, B, C. Scenes are saved with the console, but are *not* saved with the Project to the SD Card. If you load a Project, and then load a Scene, the mixer settings from the Scene will supercede the mixer settings from the Project. If you turn off the console via the switch on the back, the mixer settings loaded by the Scene will overwrite the Project settings. If however you eject the SD Card before turning off the console, the Project settings will be preserved. Scenes cannot be deleted without resetting the console to factory settings. @JoeFensterle
@JoeFensterle 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Andreas, of course it is difficult to judge the problem like this, but most likely this is not a problem with the zoom livetrak but rather a problem of OBS or the system audio setting. For OBS, sometimes it helps to go into the source and reset it (at least this worked for video problems with my OBSTinycam - finding this solution took me hours). Conflict with audio drivers are more difficult to solve and this is something I also regularly experience on my windows system, as I have different audio-interfaces connected besides the zoom l8. There are a couple of helpful tutorials on how to solve these issues, but each one usually taggles an individual error source which is not necessarily the problem in your case. I only can wish you good luck in identifying your problem! Best wishes, Joe

Thank you so much for this video. Using your method, is there a way to add some reverb from the L-8 to your outgoing master track that will be sent to the listeners through the video conferencing software? Because you’re sending the master track, does the EQ and everything Applied to your microphone channel get sent through that master channel or is it simply the pre-fader signal and you have to process everything in a DAW if you want effects? As a musician, I am able to process my vocals and guitar before even sending the signal to the mixer using effect pedals. That might be my workaround.
@JoeFensterle
@JoeFensterle 2 жыл бұрын
Dear John, the USB out (master out) and the mix-out on the XLR and headphone jacks for Master, Mix A-C are all post fader, therefore if your conferencing software (e.g. Zoom) get's the Master USB, it should contain all fader settings, EQ and effects (e.g. reverb, but unfortunately no compression with the L-8). For a DAW it is different, this get's the dry pre-fader signal from the individual channels 1-8 (if selected) and the wet post-fader signal if the master is selected as source (just tested it for Audacity and Studio 1). So therefore, no need to use effect pedals (but of course possible). BTW: if I want to use the audio of a stream later on, I always record the dry signal on the l-8 in parallel to have the full flexibility in post-processing and to avoid the risk that later it turns out that the reverb on the master was too pronounced...

Thanks @Joe Fernsterle for a great tutorial. There are reports that echo cancelling in Zoom software now makes it possible to use the “master” mix (i.e. Fader 7 in the mix/up position). Is this correct and would you be in a position to test this? Also, if an Atem switcher/video mixer is used to stream with this setup, is a mix (say, Mix C including all the channel with USB/Fader 7 up) the only alternative to feed the audio to the switcher? If that is the case, since this would be using the stereo headphone jack, I’d imagine the audio quality would be lower than the master XLR out. Is it possible to test this too?
@JoeFensterle
@JoeFensterle 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Stanley-Carl, your question with respect to Zoom is (at least to the best of my knowledge) correct. The meeting software gets better and better with echo cancelling, therefore an "echo" from the Livetrak will also be canceled. Problem is, that this software cancelling will of course heavily affect the sound quality and this does not necessarily work well with other meeting software. It will not work at all with OBS etc., therefore my setting is always a USB mix minus, as this does not has a negative impact by any means and I do not risk that there is a problem if I switch to a software which cannot handle this. With respect to the ATEM: In this case, it heavily depends on the setting. My standard setting is KZbin streaming via the ATEM, Audio comes from the computer (i.e. Videos) and the Livetrak (Rode Podmic). I channel the audio in the computer via Voicemeeter Banana to the HDMI port connected to the ATEM. Therefore, no need to use headphone out / in in this case. It get's more complicated if I have a set-up with an additional computer for Zoom / Webex Livestreaming (which also requires audio in). In this case, headphone connections have to be used and this is unfortunately quite tricky to get a sufficient sound at the ATEM (indeed, I had to separate the stereo channels on the ATEM, in order to get an appropriate sound). A video on ATEM + Livetrak is planned, but unfortunately did not yet have time for it... Hope this could help :) Best, Joe BTW: of course, the audio quality of a balanced XLR out is higher than headphone out. But I bet that nobody will realize this in a standard streaming setting ;)

I must think in twisted ways since i came up with exatly the same solution 2h in owning L-8 ;) The only downside of that is person on the call (skype/discord etc.) wont hear computer audio if you would need so, but I'd say it's 1 in 1mln cases that you would need USB Mix Minus AND sending sound over said call.
@JoeFensterle
@JoeFensterle 3 жыл бұрын
Dear Robert, I think it is not really surprising, that another one also finds such a simple solution - surprising is, that no one talks about this solution, including zoom! Your described downside is something you will face with any adio interface or external sound card - and indeed this is relevant, at least for me: I am actually using OBS for generating my stream, but the youtube livestream is sent via a video switcher (ATEM Mini Pro ISO). Already the full digital audio routing required "a bit" more brain work than the USB minus setup - and Voicemeeter Banana ;) (which, of course, would also solve the skype/discord problem you described) Best, Joe

Hi! Thank you for the video! Very informative. One question: I saw at 8:29 that you had engaged both the USB input on channel 7 and the TRRS phone input on channel 8 (both LED’s were lit). Does that mean that while you are creating the mix-minus on channel 7 through USB, you could parallelly use the TRRS phone input as well? The manual says that if you are using the phone input (channel 8), then the LINE input on channel 7 is disengaged, it cannot be used - and it visualises it through that the LED light for the line input on channel 7 is flashing. However, it does not say that the USB input on channel 7 wouldn’t work because the phone input is in use. (Similarly as the soundpads on channel 7 also do work while the phone is plugged into the TRRS input). Alone the fact that the LED for the USB input on channel 7 was not flashing while you had channel 8 set to the phone input is promising, but could you pls confirm if they work at the same time? Thanks a million!
@JoeFensterle
@JoeFensterle 3 жыл бұрын
Hi :) For "normal" phonecalls I routinly use the TRRS jack and in turn my adio-equipment as a so to say luxury intercom. The USB connection on channel 7 and the pads works fine in parallel, but not TRRS ch8 + line signal ch7. This means in theory, that you can have a guest on the physical phone via TRRS mix minus, and on your computer via skype and the USB mix minus as described. BUT: the drawback is, that the signal on the TRRS jack is a master signal minus the input from channel 8. And if you have established a usb mix minus, the master signal misses the signal from the computer - and thus also the TRRS. This is a problem, if you do the described skype + phone call in parallel, but if you do not need a usb mix minus on the computer, as you don't use the usb-in (e.g. because you just play jingles from the computer), then it is of course no problem to route the usb signal from 7 into the TRRS on 8. Hope this response could help you :)

@@JoeFensterle just what I needed, thank you, really thought to the end, I appreciate it very much! Thanks for pointing out the drawback, this is truly a major one - the whole idea would have been that using the TRRS + USB mix-minus + the custom mixes with the old-fashined mix-minus setup using the iRig2, you could have up to 4 remote guests in a podcast, which would have been truly unique. Now I know it is not possible. Really helpful!

Dear Joe Fensterle, dear reader, First of all I hope you are doing good in theese times! I own a copy of the ZOOM L-8 myself, and stumbled upon a weird problem recently. I used it as audio-interface on iOS and Windows before, but when i tried connecting it to MacOS a problem occured. The problem is, that the computer recieves every kind of audio, that is going into the L-8; regardless whether the channel is muted or not. Neither the mute-button nor moving the faders can eliminate the sound going into the computer. For example: I use it as Interface while I am in Skype. I mute my microphone, but the computer still recieves the audio from the microhpone. Even worse: when i play back the computer-audio through the L-8, the computer "hears" itself, which leads to an annoying echo/feedback for anyone with me in skype. This applies to all other kinds of "Audio-Input"-related apps as well. Garageband, Voice-Memo, OBS etc. I cannot mute any channel whatsoever when I am connected to any MacOS device. I have tried different Mac's as well, but i only own one L-8 and cannot test whether the problem lies in my device or not. I do believe my device is faulty, the USB 3-4 on channel 8 doesn't work either, which does not really bother me. But not beeing able to use it as Interface on MacOS is a real letdown - if anyone knows something about this problem, be it that you have the same experience, or know that it is different when you are using your ZOOM L-8 as MacOS-Interface, please let me know. Neither my reseller, nor the company ZOOM have replied to my question, wether or not this result is "supposed" or not. Thanks in advance!
@JoeFensterle
@JoeFensterle 3 жыл бұрын
Dear Sukiya, hm, as I do not have MacOS, I can only speculate. First, the USB 3+4 also never worked in any "normal" setting in my case. With respect to interface: most common programs get the master signal, and this is of course post fader. However, if you use your interface with a DAW like studio one, cubase or logics, then every channel can be adressed (e.g. channel 1 as mono-channel with the microphone etc.). And these signals come in pre-fader, therefore muting, EQ etc. has no influence. For DAWs this of course makes sense, for other software not. So my speculation is, that the signal you "see" is not the master signal, but the pre-fader signal of a channel (or several channels). Again, I do not have MacOS and this is only speculation. In any case, good luck :)

Dear Joe Fensterle,
and other people reading,

first of all: thank you very much for your reply. It served me as hint to understanding what is happening.

I was indeed not aware, that the single channels itself were send to the USB_Connection pre-fader/mute.

When connected to Windows/iOS it obviously works like this as well, as it is intended (tested and confirmed).

I work with the application „zoom.us“, and on Windows and iOS it worked well, on MacOS its a bit different.

Thanks to your tip I thought of a way to test what might be happening.

I connected the L-8 to my Mac and started zoom.us.

The efffect-channel is only sent to the master-track, as well as EQ or low-cut. What I did was applying an effect (Hall 1) to the microphone, which was then heard in zoom.us
Muting either the Effect-Channel or the Master effectively muted the effect I had set- which proofed that the master-mute/fader DOES work.

Therefore my conclusion is, that on Mac, zoom.us seems to recognize the L-8 as multritrack-interface and listens to every channel, pre-fader/mute in addition to the master.

On other Video/Voice-Chats (Discord, Facetime etc.) the L-8 works only through the Master, only zoom.us seems to hear all channels.

I had previously tested, that channels are still sent even though muted on the L-8 iteself, when I didnt know that they are supposed to be pre-fader, which is why I didnt think of the possibility earlier. So thanks again!!

And allthough its great that I now know what is happening, and I am happy, that my L-8 isnt defective, I still do have the problem of not beeing able to use the L-8 with zoom.us due to the feedback the computer gets from itself (annyong echo for everyone but me).

Also, if anyone is interested in a solution that at least works:

You can plug one of the Signal-Outs of the L8 into another interface, which is connected to the computer, and send the computer itself into the L-8 through an AUX-connection to any channel, and then apply the mix-minus as explained in the Video, just with the computer-channel, wherever that may be, muted to your OutputChannel.

Also: if anyone has any experience with other Multritrack-Devices with MacOS and zoom.us, please let me know whether you have the same problem, if you know of a solution or if there is no problem at all. =)

Thanks for your time, have a good time! PS: I wonder what the USB 3-4 ist supposed to do then, as it doesnt work with my L-8 either. I never need it on 3-4, so its not a problem, but whats the reason behind it, assuming it is supposed to "work" the way it does?

Hey Joe, Great video thanks. One quick question if I may. How do you handle a Zoom Call, where you want to mix other music from your computer for the Zoom participants. E.g.: You have a couple of local mics (say Ch1 & 2) and then a couple of guests, and a sound track (say spotify or KZbin) that you want to share with the participants. They clearly shouldn't hear their own voices, but they should hear the audio track....
@JoeFensterle

Hi Roger. Tanks. In this case, I would route the computer audio via voicemeeter banana, where you can use two different inputs. One audio (eg zoom) goes to voicemeeter aux in, the other to the other in channel. BTW: sometimes the simplest approach is to use two computers - eg iPad for zoom, all other things run on other computer.

Sorry, just realized that your comment was not yet responded. Of course I do not know your setting, but some meeting software, including zoom, is quite strong in filtering out a "returned" sound, in other words the meeting software itself creates a mix minus. However, this is no real mix-minus on the level of the livetrak and it is quite risky to rely on the software, as this might work with some meeting software, but not with others. If it works fine in your case and you stick to the same setting, of course no need to change something :)

Hello! Do you know any way to mix in the zoom l12 and have the obs recognize only the master output on a stereo? I want to mix on the l12 and go into obs with the stereo mix. Thank you!
@JoeFensterle
@JoeFensterle 3 жыл бұрын
Hi :) Normally, OBS should only "see" the master - in contrast to DAWs etc, therefore, the default should be mixing with the L12 and OBS gets the mix (at least this was the case for the L8). However, if you do not want to stream directly via OBS and e.g. use a device like the ATEM Mini Pro or another computer for streaming, then routing the audio gets a bit more tricky. For this reason, I do the mixing and recording with the L8, and the "audio management" in the PC not with OBS but with voicemeeter banana, as with this software you can freely assign in- and output channels. In the near future I plan a short video on how such a (full digitial) setup can look like - as it is a bit tricky.

@JoeFensterle
@JoeFensterle 3 жыл бұрын
Dear Juan, thanks :) With respect to the PA system: it depends on where you connect it. You can't connect the PA system to the two symmetric XLR Master out jacks - as they contain the master signal, which in this setting would lack the signal from the computer and just contains the signal from your gear (guitarrs, mics etc). If this is fine for you, then of course this is no problem. Otherwise you have to connect your PA to the monitor out ports, setting it to mix a / mix b and mix the signal appropriately. Of course, this connection will no more be symmetric and you have just one more output (mix c) as a "real" monitor out left (if you do not simply split the PA out signal). Btw: in my office, the "standard" configuration (always USB mix minus) is a PA (LD Maui 5 Go) connected to mix a via a stereo-phone jack - 2 x XLR cable.

@JoeFensterle 3 жыл бұрын
Dear Juan, ok, this seems to be a bit more complex setting. Indeed, I am actually doing something similar: I am streaming live and interactive experiments from the lab. Three mics are connected to the L8, the students participate via Webex (same as zoom) for the audio and the video from the lab is streamed live via youtube. 3 cameras and a computer are connected to the ATEM mini pro iso (unfortunately not extreme ;) ) and the video control is via companion / elgato stream deck. The operators in the lab get the audio from the remote students from Webex, the students just get the mic audio and the youtube stream gets the complete audio. KZbin streaming is done via the ATEM switch. It works without feedback and therefore should also work in your case. For the proper audio routing in my case in addition voicemeeter banana is employed. Just make sure that you run everything on a computer with enough power. I plan to make a "making of" video in the near future explaining such a set up. Good luck for your project!

Dear Jacob, indeed the starting problem was exactly, that the surface made problems both if I connected it via the TSSR jack or a phone jack, even if I used an additional soundcard (and going via USB made all problems disappear). At this time, all other equipment did not show this. However, now I have another equipment with problems appearing, if I have to connect via audio cable: the ATEM Mini video switchers. Based on the noise appearing, it looks like there is a phase problem with the audio out signal. In the ATEM switch settings, this could be solved by separating the stereo channels. However, I am not an audio engineer, so do not ask me about the nature of the problem and how to get rid of it in general...

Dear Mike, just connect your speakers to the headphone jacks of mix A-C in the same way as described for the headphone (indeed this is what I always do: speakers Mix A, headphone Mix B). And then you can create a USB Mix Minus for the master and the desired mix for A-C. Of course you might need an adapter cable, in my case I use a stereo jack to 2 x mono xlr, but e.g. on Thoman you will find any adapters required. The disadvantage is obviously, that you cannot use the synchronous XLR Master out, which might influence the quality.

I did this without any additional equipment or cabling. I CANNOT dictate how I got it to work since it has been MONTHS ago that I performed this and my findings were accidental. I've saved the settings in the Zoom but cannot recreate it. My initial problem was being on Discord voice chat with other people and ALL audio coming into USB from Discord would loop back and echo to anyone connected to the voice channel in Discord. I followed the confusing suggestion given to me by a Zoom USA tech (as you read in another video comment) and somehow, I got it to work. I'll attempt recreating it and try to make a video of how to do it. Thx.

Would this work for a hybrid meeting? Meaning, I want to create the usb mix minus for the zoom callers, but I also have a in person meeting on my end. Can I Connect my powered speakers on Mix A so they all hear the person on the computer as well as the live presenter on mic 1? Also, would I be able to select Mic 1 & 2 simultaneously to be used as inputs in Zoom in the event I have two speakers in person on my end?

Hello Joe, great to see this video. I'm using Samson mixpad mxp124fx mixer,,,as a singer often i need go to live streaming via streamyard,,,useally there is 3-4 guest always to talking each other and i'm joining with my mixer to singing the song along with karaoke or instruments like guitar,,My guests are facing double voice/echo problem when my mic is on..Can you advise me how to set my mixer so that problem not occur? Hope you reply me back...thanks in advance 🙏

Hello, unfortunately, I have no experience with the samson mixpad and therefore cannot say, whether and how a mix minus via USB is possible. If the mixpad has audio monitor outs, which can be seperately adjusted, then a "conventional" mix minus should be possible. For this, there are several videos around. Best, Joe

so you are using the Rode Podmic on Zoom L-8 right? does it need a some cloudlifter or fethead/dynamite? i mean is this video recording iof yours post processed already? and lastly is it Gain Hungry and how's the noisefloor of the Rode Podmic has been?
@JoeFensterle
@JoeFensterle 6 ай бұрын
hi, podmic is no problem. One reason that I've chosen the L-8 is that it has a sufficient gain for the podmic. And indeed, this is the case. I have absolutely zero noise from the L-8 gain - and no need for a fethead.

What are you changing at 9.35 when you say' I just plug my microphone instead of master out I go to monitor out' ? Is it something you change on you PC ?
@JoeFensterle

I think the basis of the confusion is, that I talked about microphone instead of headphone at 9.35 - of course, the microphone i.e. inputs are always unchanged, it is just about the output master and mix a-c (sorry, my fault). mabe just watch again 11.03, where I did not confus microphone and headphone :)

@@phcphcphc hi Peter. The buttons I explained before - I had no second camera, therefore I recorded the part showing the l8 separately. With the cables no problem at all. @@ArnoldVroomans I assume you use your mac both for skype and obs. In this case, you can route the signals internally via voicemeeter banana (although I do not know whether this exists on a mac) and for the livetrak use the USB mix minus setup as you have depicted.

@@JoeFensterle but what I was thing because it is 4-out. That you have two separate mixes going out of the mixer one minus and one to obs. Then you have much better control and only the mixer for the audio.

Dear Chris, this sounds strange, as the USB Mix-Minus is generated by the hardware and should be completely independent of the software used. Just some ideas to make sure that there is no issue with respect to the setting at the L-8: For USB, only one channel is selected, not both (7+8)? In the master mix, the USB channel fader is fully down (Faders are not motorized, so be sure that it is not memorized at a different position)? At the Mix-A headphone jack, Mix-A is selected, not Master? Did you try it with the Mix-B or C? If you checked everything and the problem persists, than it seems to be a problem with the software - and might also persist with another interface. I hope that these hints help and you can solve the problem.

@@JoeFensterle thanks for the reply. I haven't tried Mix B and C yet. I will do that. I did an interview yesterday using Zencastr software and I could not hear my guest when Channel 7 fader was down which meant that I didn't achieve the mix minus and my guest could hear his echo. Fortunately Zencastr has an echo cancelling option so I was able to use that, but they say the audio quality is reduced and cross talk is muffled using the echo cancelling option. So I am keen to find a solution.
