Back in the mid-2000s, it was actually common to use resetable fuses. In fact, I just repaired a Socket 754 motherboard that had a catastrophic fuse failure. The fuse was reduced to ashes, and the pads were nearly pulled off the board, but it was still possible to carefully clean it up and replace it with another fuse from a junk board I had, and superglue the pads and SMD fuse into place. Manufacturers could go back to them, but they cost more, don't act as fast, and when they fail, they tend to burn up.

Motherboard manufacturers could fix the situation but seems like they don't care. Also why not add a new larger fuse instead of shorting it? I used to do this with laptop motherboards when I repaired them for a job.

@@LuumiJuhani if they don't physically fit on the board there's always a way to fit them vertical, run wires or whatever. Just consider you may or may not be able to fit the heat sink or io shield thing back on. High temp glue sticks can help to make the mod stable and with isopropyl can be easily removed as it makes the glue brittle and loose its tact to what its applied to. Else it could get stuck to components and break them off the board if you try to remove it without isopropyl aka rubbing alcohol. Anyway hot glue has its downsides too. I'm just suggesting it if you are using a really unique way to fit physically larger fuses that doesn't fit in such a small place, it's not idea.

Just found your video. Arround 5 years ago I started with a Maximus VII Hero Z97 that had PCI Express failures and other small things not working right. Moved the next year to a Gigabyte G3 Gaming Z97 and everything worked for a while like a dream. But the last (3) years from now, I'm facing these issues. I mean, USB is working but behaves weird. My docks are not working via USB 3.0 anymore, and when they did, devices such as keyboard and mouse wouldn't be recognized when replugged or even after reboot. Currently, my pc's USB 2.0 ports are doing that job flawlessly. And with these issues, I mostly got the Windows warning: USB not recognized/unknown. When I did make it work with the USB 2.0 as described, I tried to make it work with my VR headset that I bought recently. The outcome is that it did work as supposed to be, even with another USB 2.0 port. Now, it doesn't work at all on nothing but the front port of the pc case. But it would be possible that it can work on another day for example.. Possibility also is if it works, SteamVR fails to recognize it so it would be a false positive end result. Hmmmmmhh.. I'm waiting for a chance to grab parts of the next generation to replace all of this piece of shit pc.

Great stuff! For years I've been using a PCI USB card on a Rampage II GENE since I blew all the ports powering a USB hub with a too high voltage power supply. Do you think it's just the fuses or the USB controller chip itself? Also would aluminium foil taped down work? As I hate soldering haha... Cheers from the UK!

I had the same issue on Maximus IX Apex, you need to remove the heatsink assembly and check the fuses right near the USB ports.

Thank you! My Asrock Z370 Extreme4 had a fuse with 22 ohms(Mouse flashing and keyboard without response on usb 2 x 3.1 ) and another with 84 ohms (1 x USB 3.1 did not work.) . Hello. I am not experienced with soldering, and just want to get this right. You use the soldering material on top of the fuses right? Like you put the solder on top of the small fuse brick like you show in your video? or do you take the little fuse brick off the motherboard? And i'm wondering - is the soldering material allowed to touch the motherboard circuit board, or will that cause damage?

Amazing, I did a test by putting metal to bridge and it works. Question - Bypassing the fuse, will this destroy other components if another shortage happen? But why did all my USBs short. I did plug a new RGB keyboard. I feel that could have done it. Mind you my motherboard is 4th Gen Intel.

I have no idea why this happens so often. If you get a short it might just burn the port.

i think its a fail safe system to protect the damage to its north/south bridge chipset. Most cases the fuses getting blown bcos of high current draw.

The components vary. I can maybe try to check later. Fuses are generally easy to spot right after the USB ports.

For blown USB voltage lines i always use 1.5A fuse wire, alternatively you can bridge from the 5v line of the ATX connector

The issue is common among new boards. All old motherboards are rock solid.

i have this issue due to i plugged my powerbank into the front panel usb 3 and two of the usbs ports are dead now. later came to realise that we shud not plug any high current charging devices into any of the normal usb sockets.

Hi, i have a Asus Maximus VI Hero motherboard for the Intel 4th gen cpu's with usb problems. The problem i have is very odd. The onboard connectors for front usb ports not working either. All usbs are not working/partially working. I did manage to upgrade the bios, and it went fine, but and it did recognise a usb in bios at that time. But now it wont. There was usb problems before i upgraded also, thats why i did that in the first place. Its a while since i was testing this, but if i remember correctly here is how it works: USB2 ports: They ONLY work with mouse and keyboard (i think only the highest once on the IO was working) If i connect a usb2 stick to any usb2 port its not detected either in Win10 or in the bios (drivers are installed in Windows, and everything shows up fine, all hubs etc) Usb3 sticks does not work in Usb2 ports either. USB3 ports: Usb2 sticks, keyboards, mouses and other usb devices does not work, BUT Usb3 sticks DOES WORK in Windows if i remember correctly, but they are not detected in bios or on startup. I have looked everywhere but cant find any info. Im now going to check the fuses on my board. But i would love to hear yout thoughts on this.. :-) Edit: Just checked all the fuses around the usbs and they were ok :-S I dont understand this, they show up in windows as normal, but not working.. I have cleared the bios also but no luck.

Hey I think this could be my problem because one of my USB3.0 ports has gone completely and the one next to it now has less power as if the voltage has halved but My PCI USB expansion works fine so it is just the Intel ones as you explain but my problem is my board is MSI Z77A G41 and it looks very different so I cant even identify the fuses at this point 😆 There is only one that I think could maybe be a fuse but I must be looking at the wrong thing, Hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

The Z170M OCF is still dead. Key is to check the main voltage rails that are they zero ohms to ground.

I have a problem with my motherboard. First some sata ports stopped working. Then after power off pc, I could only get display through onboard. After few attempts, graphics card worked again. Stable for 2 weeks 24/7 After next power off, now no display through onboard or graphics card. But a few power on/off and it worked. Stable for 1 month 24/7 Power off again, now no display at all. Eww, solder bridges. Now if you have bad USB device plugged into such "repaired" board, you will fry the board, instead of killing a 0.2$ fuse. You can buy these fuses from Digikey or Mouser, nothing special.

That is not rocket science, and very sadly the problem many modern motherboards face. Old motherboards do not have this issue. I have seen this issue numerous times already, Z97 OC Formula, Z170 and Z170M OC Formula. M9 Apex, and many other motherboards as well.

@@LuumiJuhani To a lot of typical people watching KZbin this is rocket science. I stumbled over you video because I have an Asus ROG Rampage IV Extreme that all of a sudden the ethernet adapter and some USB ports have stopped working. For me to go in a solder anything in there would be suicide.
