You, my friend, are a legend! I've just purchased a rpi4 and wanted to run on SSD but had a nightmare and no luck getting it working until I discovered this video. Thank you.

New to the Pi community, and loving it. It takes me back to the days when you needed at least some skills of some kind to use a computer. 😃 Thanks for all of your videos, as they have been an incredibly valuable resource. One interesting thing (to me) I discovered with a Sabrent USB 3.0 to SATA cable I just got a few days ago: It refuses to boot anything properly. On occasion, it seems like it's close, but it's as if it's running very slowly. I was about to walk away (gotta sleep sometime), when I thought I'd try it in a USB 2 port on the Pi. It works! I tried the cable quirk fix (just for kicks, as this isn't the JMicron cable), and no luck. I tried creating the images with Etcher and Pi Imager - no difference. I tried countless different images (I'm running Twister on an external Netac 256GB drive with no problems), and no luck. The USB 2 port is the only "solution". I've got another cable coming from Amazon, and it's one that many people stated works fine on the Pi 4. Oh yeah, this is the 8GB Pi 4 I've got. Anyway, I'm now looking at Raspberry Pi OS on the 128GB Silicon Power drive. I don't know if I should expect faster speeds than from the MicroSD card, but it does seem to feel quicker. Any ideas as to why this works as it does/doesn't? Thanks again! Update: After discovering that there's a specific product and vendor ID for my cable (from RaspberryPi[dot]org), I edited the cmdline.txt, added the correct info, and it now works! 😃

I literally spent the last three nights, all night, trying to get my ssd to work... I feel so stupid now after watching this because it was just so simple. It is worth mentioning this can work with other adapters/enclosures/hubs if you grab the numbers specific to your device manufacturer and model by running lsusb in the terminal

Thanks for the video, this solved my problem here also. The 'cmdline.txt' file contains one line without CR or LF characters. so if you add something you need to squese the new string in or append id at the end without CR or LF.

Like, literally characters “C”, “R”, “L” and “F”, or something else?
@CornelisVermazen4 жыл бұрын
@@PilotAtInception CR = Cariage return and LF is Line feed. This line does not contain any character of them. The phrase to file cmdline.txt is to add is : usbstorage.quirks:152d:0578:u

Interesting same problem with the Sabrent adapter… Jmicron controller too
@mirciulaicastefan54054 жыл бұрын
The method works.With normal SD boot, I have tried to read a patriot p200 ssd with Jmicron cable but does not work. Gparted open this ssd after a few minutes. But Jmicron cable works perfect with an old sata 2 laptop hdd in uasp (70MB/s seq write). So seems that the problem is with ssd. I confirm that command remove uasp and now my ssd is mounted immediately. The path for usb boot is opened. Thank you.

The problem with the Quirks fix for JMicron-based cables is that it not only disables UASP but also TRIM which is important for the durability of an SSD. If the cable is used for a HDD, it doesn't matter. Otherwise, a cable that uses an ASMedia chip is preferable for an SSD as it doesn't require use of Quicks and thus full UASP and TRIM is available on the RBP4. Look for an ASM1153E-based cable such as the ELUTENG B0716JKJ68 or the UGREEN B07Y825SB8 on Amazon. If you want to use cheap mSATA SSDs found in laptops, you can get a USB3 carrier board such as the ELUTENG B07VP2WH73.
@MichelClavette3 жыл бұрын
Two extra notes: ELUTENG also makes a side-entry cable such as the one from UGREEN. Look for ASIN # B089VMXNZ7 on Amazon. A firmware update for the ASM1153E is available that disables the automatic sleep mode which causes access delays on SSDs. Search for version 141126_A1_EE_82 on the Web.

Issue I had would only boot if SSD plugged into USB1.1 port, would run but eventually lock up (disk IO issue) Adding quirk so far has allowed me to boot (and faster) from USB 2.0 port and stable so far...

Worst thing about those sata to USB cables is that SATA part is barely holding on. Even if you move a little bit, it might disconnect, so I don't suggest running OS that way.
@leepspvideo4 жыл бұрын
I haven’t had any disconnections with either cable. I’m often moving them around while the os is running.

Try plugging in the other usb also, as that usb to data comes with the thinner wire power and thicker cable for power and data

Is this a fix only for that cable or is it suitable for USB sticks as well, e.g. SanDisk Extreme Pro?
@leepspvideo4 жыл бұрын
USB sticks don’t usually need fixing. Make sure you have an up to date eeprom and start with a USB boot compatible OS 64 bit Raspberry Pi OS or Twister OS to see if everything is working.
@PilotAtInception4 жыл бұрын
leepspvideo thanks for confirming that! Thanks to your videos, I updated the eeprom (where you select “stable”?) and have successfully been running PINN NOOBS with RPiOS 32bit, gentoo64, Kodi/LibreELEC and Arch on a 128Gb SanDisk Extreme Pro USB stick and have managed to get RPiOS 64bit on its own (without PINN) running off a 64Gb SanDisk Cruzer Blade USB stick but so far haven’t had any luck with pi-topOS Sirius or CrowPiOS.

Try tailoring the quirks line to the individual drive and see if it makes a difference to speed. Have also found the display is having difficulties when power being drawn from the usb3 port. Blank screen but normal VNC. Setting a fixed resolution using hdmi_group and hdmi_mode (2 and 82 for 1080p) plus upping config_hdmi_boost helps. www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=245931
