They dropped 2 weights to slow down their descent. Not to rise. They didn’t want to hit the bottom of the sea floor going 50 meters a minute. So it wasn’t to rise.. it was just to slow down.

Yes. They were very near the viewing depth of the Titanic when they dropped the weights.
@frogmanant
@frogmanant 5 күн бұрын
Those were the extra rails they added for a faster descent, probably to give more bottom time. When they were dropped this should have left the sub with it's own set of drop weights. In addition, their final get home safely plan was add sacks of 'sand' to the frame which would "unglue" after 10 hrs, releasing the sand. This loss of weight should mean that the sub, with the frame should surface in the event of any foreseeable system failure. If everything failed, & the sub was sitting on the bottom, when the glue dissolved, the sub must come up. This seems a good long period plan. We know nothing about their sudden crisis plan. They should have been able to ditch their on-board weights immediately. Those weights would be substantial. The claimed payload was about 1500 lbs. Lets call crew weight 900lbs. So the sub should have been 600lbs positive buoyancy for this dive. This means they would need to add 600 lbs to make it sink. This in turn means that at depth they needed to drop this 600 at depth. I see no sign of a weight of that size on the craft. Where is the drop weight?

@@frogmanant It's been awhile since I read itnto all of this, But I remember there was something hokey about how they would release the weights. IIRC, they have to all get to one side of the sub to make it tilt and drop the weights. Or something along those lines.

@@TommyKing-m3f I read one report that explained that dropping those weights at that depth would shock it, and make the Titan bow upwards. With its state of fragility at approx 3360m, that could do it!

It was so nice to finally hear David Lochridge’s testimony, it’s such a shame he was not listened too. When he presented evidence regarding Rush’s attempt at a home made breathing scrubber , I nearly fell off my chair. Shocking stuff and likely indicative of the mind set, work ethic and casual regard for safety.

I'd imagine it has been therapeutic for David Lochridge considering he's been under court order to not be able to talk about any of this stuff unless he was under subpoena. He is such a educated and well spoken individual. Also I had to take same response about the homemade scrubber. I actually have the exact same plastic box/container in my homemade trailer. I bought it at Home Depot. I didn't realize I had submarine grade parts In my homemade camper.

They dropped 2 weights to reduce their dive speed. They were descending much too fast. As the sub descends it gets less buoyant and will need to shed some weights or increase air ballast to maintain trim and speed. And the slight negative buoyancy they need to descend.

This investigation is quite interesting. I find those questioning the main players are a little soft handed. Those being questioned certainly do not want any of the responsibility to fall to them. As the buttoned down US Coast Guard ask their questions I can sense that internally they are screaming, "my god they went to the Home Depot for parts" . "my god these amateurs had no idea about the properties of carbon fiber". . Maybe they are not following up as much as we want but I feel they are playing the long game and know they will get all the info they need. Both them and our host here have all been non biased. For example, most people would think the Chief Engineer came across as prickly and cavalier. But in the end he would not sign off on the cracked hull as our host rightly pointed out in the stream. Sometimes a witness can come across poorly yet in the end they were on the correct side. Still a fascinating moral question is, "even though he left the company year prior, does he share some blame?". In the end I don't think so.

Who’s responsible for the risk mitigation, a/k/a safety? The culture starts at the top. While both Rich and James Cameron both occupy their submersibles I’m sure the safety vibe coming from the top was quite different. Cameron is likely much more deliberate having been a MAJOR motion film producer/director which undertaking requires lots of detail planning. Rush was in a rush. He would’ve been like a “barn storming” airplane pilot of the 1920s - devil may care, fearless to the point of recklessness. Rush was trying to innovate and push the state-of-the-art. Fine, but when does one put test pilots on board under the guise of “mission specialists?” No test pilots and any support crew know they are test pilots at the extreme edge of what’s known. I wonder if the facade of “mission specialists” will be exposed to say they were paying clients, passengers. In the USCG presentations the distinction between Polar Prince crew and clients is from the point of view of the Polar Prince. The clients are those someone paid the Polar Prince for transport.

We see in the ROV videos the aft section, the two titanium domes and at least one connecting ring. We are still missing the video of the landing frame. We know they found it as they recovered it. Plus the recovered domes are empty and clean. In the video the carbon fibre hull has been compressed into the year dome. We must assume the probable human remains where in the dome. $1,000,000 in fuel could be in the ballpark. Diesel fuel marine sells for around $5.00 per gallon and weighs say 6.25 lb/gal (750 g/liter). $1 million is 200,000 gallons for 1.25 million pounds which is 560 long tons (2240# @). According to Wikipedia the Polar Prince can carry 102,000 Imperial gallons (122,000 U.S. gal) of diesel or about 300+ tons of fuel. The USCG voyage map seems to show a return to port - for supplies & fuel?

One must begin to try linking the action of dropping weights, to possible implosion scenarios. There are enticing possibilities one can consider ... shock from the change in mass, did the weights hit the craft after being freed - maybe that missing front window?, did the craft shift from level when the weights were dropped - and something on the inside hit that window, or something else it needed? Anyway - the coincidence of the timing of the act of dropping 2 wts and the ensuing implosion - it bears examination.
