It's amazing how old and how few ice breakers the USA has and especially compared with other nations.

we don't have iced seas to break, aside from around alaska. whereas russia barely has any real warm ports so they must break to make do with what they have.

Wow-The Polar Security Cutter is truly an impressive combination of sheer power and refined functionality-a remarkable flagship of the US Coast Guard. It's truly something to admire! Best regards from the German Bight !

Way to represent the United States with class and diplomatic tact. It makes me proud as a citizen to hear about the good work that the crew of the Healy is doing and the vision for the future articulated by her Captain.

Leading intro question, "What are they dulling up there?" They are up there because the Department of Treasury and Department of Navy signed in 1965 a Memorandum of Understanding for HIGH latitude icebreaking. In the agreement, the Navy would give the Coard Guard the Russian returned WWII lend-lease ice breakers in exchange for the Coast Guard would take on the mission of HIGH latitude ice breaking. It could be argued the Dept of Transportation and Homeland Security should return the heavy ice breakers to Navy and return them the mission as well.

You got that right, return these duties to the NAVY !
