Die Donker (The Dark)
Two Afrikaans Songs
Arranged by André van der Merwe
Die Gang - Christopher Torr
(Publisher: Christopher Torr Music)
As performed by Laurika Rauch
Klein Tambotieboom - Die Heuwels Fantasties
Audio recorded at Woordfees on Thursday 12 March 2020 in the Endler, Stellenbosch.
Videos recorded 4 - 11 May 2020 at the homes of choristers during lockdown.
Sound Engineer: Dr Gerhard Roux
Video Production: Regardt Visser
Choir Management: US Woordfees - sing@sun.ac.za
English Translation:
DIE GANG (The Corridor):
In the dark corridor I saw a light, but the flame was delicate and frail.
I yearned for springtime on my uncle's farm without electricity.
My aunt said, "My child, my child, love and moths are blind."
The flame is delicate and frail, and like a thief it can disappear in the night.
Deep within the corridor I yearned for something.
The wind was singing that spring would bring love.
I could hear the day withering - it was only the sun disappearing.
And as certain as the earth that turns, a cock would crow again.
One evening the night turned to day as the storm erupted with all its force.
And I hid in the corridor, because I was afraid of the electricity.
KLEIN TAMBOTIEBOOM (a farm in the Limpopo Province of South Africa):
When the shadows come to fetch me, and when the good Lord does not look out for me,
when the ozone layer perishes
and falls into a chandelier of stars,
lay my heart to rest in Klein Tambotieboom and scatter my ashes across the Bushveld horizon.

I'm from the Netherlands and I heard this song by this awardwinning choir at the beginning of the pandemie in 2020. It still moves me time and time again. These young people singing in front of a camera each alone in their own room.... and still, évery! face lights up and shows the meaning of the words, authentic and full of compassion. Mankind at its best. Thank you.

The pandemic was hard on many people. Many people died, many people lost their incomes. Many people suffered from isolation. I was afraid of dying and make my daughters orphans. To see and hear these beautiful faces sing this beautiful song gave me much needed joy during this time.

While it was a job well done, they did have a much easier job than in most of these videos (the audio was a live recording with everyone still at Stellenbosch). Normally, these videos require the sound engineers to blend individual audio tracks together, and they got to skip that step here.

I came close to dying three days ago. Now I'm in hospital recovering alone... but not alone because I have a whole choir of brilliant singers with me. This, and all of SU Choir's lovely sounds in KZbin, is lifting me up as much as the antibiotics. It's a reminder that music can bring or increase hope inside us. There is no greater gift other than true love. Thank you Andre van der Merwe for your inspired arrangements, and to everyone who makes the SU Choir the best in the world every year. May you always be safe and full of joy, and fulfilled in your lives. Huw

Yes. But you don't know how disgusting it is to have to do this! It simply isn't nearly the same as when it is done live. Especially when you know that the chances of dying from this supposed "calamity" is about 0.2%, which is pretty much the same as flu. And anyway, they are all young, so there is no earthly reason why they shouldn't go out. But anyway. It was beautifull

For folks wondering about the lyrics: Afrikaans lyrics (English lyrics in video description) In die donker gang is ñ lig wat skyn Maar die vlam is delikaat en fyn En ek het verlang na die lentetyd Op my oom se plaas sonder elektrisiteit My tannie sȇ, “My kind, my kind, Die liefde en die motte is blind Die vlam is delikaat en fyn En dit kan soos n dief in die donker nag verdwyn.”
